Apple doesn't have Black Friday deals for iPhones — but here are the stores that do

Apple doesn't usually have its own Black Friday deals for iPhones, but stores that sell iPhones do.

For the most part, Black Friday iPhone "discounts" from stores like Target and Walmart come in the form of a gift card that you can use at that store. Meanwhile, Best Buy offers a direct discount for certain iPhones, but it isn't as much as the gift cards you'd get at other stores.

You'll have to figure out for yourself whether you shop often enough at certain stores to make gift cards worth it, or whether you'd rather take the smaller direct discount.

Alternatively, there's always Apple's Refurbished iPhone Store, where you can get discounted used iPhones that Apple has refurbished.

Check out the 2018 Black Friday deals for the iPhone:

best buy black friday

Black Friday is fast approaching and it's the season for holiday deals on video games.

As the current generation of consoles reaches the end of its life span, now is a great time to invest in an Xbox One or PlayStation 4 for cheap and start building a library of great games.

This year seems to have surprisingly few exclusive deals, with gaming products from Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo carrying nearly identical discounts across major retailers. We scrubbed early Black Friday ads from Best Buy, Target, Walmart, Newegg and more to find the most essential video game deals for the holiday.

SEE ALSO: The 3 biggest games on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch this holiday season

PlayStation 4 Slim with "Marvel's Spider-Man" - $200

The PlayStation 4 is the most popular video game console on the market and Sony is offering the slim redesigned model with the year's most popular PS4 exclusive. "Marvel's Spider-Man" broke sales records with a massive launch in September and the PlayStation 4 recently reached 86 million unites sold worldwide.

$100 off PlayStation VR Bundles

The PlayStation VR is one of the most well-received virtual reality headsets, and it's reached its lowest price point so far. There are a few PSVR bundles out there offering different games, but I'd recommend the "Astrobot: Rescue Mission" and Moss" bundle pictured above. Both games came out this year and offer a wonderfully immersive VR experience. Keep in mind that the headset must be hooked up to a PlayStation 4 to work.

Xbox One S Minecraft Creators Bundle - $200

While the Xbox One is a bit behind the PlayStation 4 in sales, it's still one of the best home-theater devices on the market. Unlike the standard PS4, the Xbox One S offers 4K playback and added compatibility with smart home devices and cable boxes.

If you're looking for added power, the Xbox One X is actually stronger than the premium PlayStation 4 Pro, and will also be on sale for $399, a $100 discount.

black friday shopping target tvs

The best time to realize you need a new TV is in early November, when Black Friday is right around the corner.

Indeed, stores like BestBuy, Walmart, and Target have offered up some pretty tempting deals for Black Friday. (You have no idea how difficult it is to resist temptation when compiling a list like this.)

Below you'll find TVs sorted by size, premium, ultra-premium, and the holy grail of TV tech — OLED, a type of screen that offers superior color.

Some models with the same screen may cost a little more than others. That's usually attributed to a better design and sometimes a slightly better quality of TV panel, even though all these TVs have 4K resolution, and many have HDR capabilities (technology that offers better colors and detail in darker scenes).

Either way, sift through here to check out the most tempting TV deals:

Apple Watch Series 4

  • Many major retailers are offering deals on the Apple Watch for Black Friday.
  • Stores like Target, Macy's, and Best Buy have discounted the Apple Watch Series 3, which came out last year, by as much as $80.
  • So far, there are very few discounts on the new Apple Watch Series 4.

Now is the best time of year to consider an Apple Watch.

Everyone from Apple itself to major retailers like Target and Macy's are launching sales for Black Friday, and there are already some great deals on the Apple Watch.

With the help of the deal-tracking website BestBlackFriday.com and sites like MacRumors, Wareable, HuffPost, USA Today, and CNET, we put together a list of the retailers offering deals on Apple Watches this Black Friday.

The deals we've seen so far are primarily for the Apple Watch Series 3, the model that came out last year, rather than the brand-new Apple Watch Series 4 or any of Apple's older watches.

But they're still great gets — especially for people who aren't necessarily looking for the latest model:

Apple Watch Series 3

  • Walmart: $20 off the 38 mm GPS model and $50 off the 42 mm GPS model, plus an extra band.
  • Costco: $40 off the 38 mm and 42 mm GPS models with sport bands.
  • Best Buy: $50 off the 38 mm and 42 mm models of the GPS-only, GPS + cellular, Nike, and stainless-steel versions.
  • Target: $80 off both the GPS-only models and the GPS + cellular models, which regularly start at $279 and $379.
  • Macy's: $80 off the GPS-only models and $50 off the GPS + cellular models.
  • Sprint: $100 off when you add a line onto a qualifying service plan.
  • Meijer: $100 off the base model.
  • B&H: $180 off the 42 mm stainless-steel GPS + cellular model.

Apple Watch Series 4

  • T-Mobile: $20 a month for the 40 mm GPS + cellular model. And when you buy one Series 3 or Series 4, you'll get a second one $200 off after 24 months of bill credits.
  • AT&T: $60 off the GPS + cellular models with the purchase of an iPhone 6 or later model.
  • Sprint: $100 off when you add a line onto a qualifying service plan.

The PlayStation 4 will be cheaper than ever before this holiday — but that's not the only hot gaming deal Sony has

PlayStation 4

  • Many stores have already launched their video game sales for Black Friday and the holiday season.
  • Sony's main offerings are a discounted PlayStation 4 bundle with "Marvel's Spider-Man" and a big price drop on PlayStation's virtual-reality headset.
  • Plenty of PlayStation 4 games will be on sale during the weekend too, including PS4 exclusive titles like "God of War" and "Horizon: Zero Dawn."

With Black Friday just a few days away, early video game sales have begun.

Sony recently announced that it had sold 86 million PlayStation 4 units worldwide, making it the most popular video game console on the market. That number is certain to grow during this year's holiday sales, with a special bundle dropping the PlayStation 4 to its lowest price ever and steep discounts on the console's virtual-reality headset, the PlayStation VR.

Here are the lowest prices for PlayStation consoles and games this holiday season:

SEE ALSO: Here are all the best deals for Xbox One consoles and games this holiday season

DON'T MISS: There's only one really good deal on the Nintendo Switch this holiday shopping season

This $200 PlayStation 4 bundle is the cheapest the system has ever been.

The bundle will be one of the most sought-after video game gifts this holiday season. Sony is offering the redesigned slim model with the year's most popular PS4 exclusive. "Marvel's Spider-Man," an open-world adventure for gamers of all ages, broke sales records with a massive launch in September.

PlayStation VR bundles are $100 cheaper for the holidays.

The PlayStation VR, one of the best-received virtual-reality headsets, has reached its lowest price point so far.

There are a few PSVR bundles with different games, but I'd recommend the "Astro Bot Rescue Mission" and "Moss" bundle, pictured above. Both games came out this year and offer a wonderfully immersive VR experience.

If you're willing to pay a bit more, the "Creed: Rise to Glory" and "Superhot VR" bundle comes with two PlayStation Move controllers, a slightly better value for the price. "Superhot VR" is also one of the most exciting VR games I've played, making full use of the motion controls and VR headset.

Keep in mind that the headset must be hooked up to a PlayStation 4 to work, and games with motion controls may require the PlayStation Move controllers, which are not included in every bundle.

Here are the available PlayStation VR bundles:

  • PlayStation VR "Astro Bot Rescue Mission" and "Moss" bundle — $199 at GameStop, Best Buy, Target, Walmart, Amazon, and Newegg.
  • PlayStation VR "Creed: Rise to Glory" and "Superhot VR" bundle (comes with two PlayStation Move controllers) — $249 at GameStop, Best Buy, Target, Walmart, Amazon, and Newegg
  • PlayStation VR "Doom VFR" bundle — $199 at GameStop, Best Buy, Target, Walmart, Amazon, and Newegg
  • PlayStation VR "The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim VR" bundle (comes with two PlayStation Move controllers) — $250 at GameStop and Target (available only in stores)

You'll find deals on PlayStation games new and old in stores and online.

Hundreds of PlayStation games will be on sale for Black Friday and throughout the holiday season, including new games released in the past few months.

Here are more than 20 discounted games to look out for, at the cheapest prices we could find — keep in mind that most major stores will have sales on the same games, even if the prices are a few dollars apart:

  • "Assassin's Creed Odyssey"— $27 at GameStop
  • "Call of Duty Black Ops 4"— $38 at GameStop
  • "Dragon Ball FighterZ"— $17 at Walmart
  • "Fallout 76"— $40 at GameStop

LOL Surprise

  • Black Friday hasn't officially started, but the holiday shopping season is already off to a roaring start online.
  • The hottest toys so far have been L.O.L. Surprise! dolls, Fingerlings toys, and Little Live Pets.
  • The most popular tech purchases include digital cameras, which are seeing a resurgence, as well as the Amazon Fire TV and Amazon Echo. Video game consoles have also been popular, including the Nintendo Switch, NES Classic, and Xbox One X.
  • Adobe forecasts that $124.1 billion will be spent online in November and December this year.

Holiday sales are off to a roaring start already.

$31.9 billion was been spent online between November 1 and 20, according to Adobe Analytics. That represents 16.7% growth over last year's numbers. Every single day of the month, through November 20, reeled in more than $1 billion in online sales, a first. Monday, November 20 was the first day to crest $2 billion.

"We are on track for another blockbuster season for e-commerce, as consumers increasingly favor the convenience of shopping online over making the trip to stores," Taylor Schreiner, director of Adobe Digital Insights, said in a prepared statement.

"Big discounts are on the horizon in the coming days, and shoppers need not wait until Cyber Monday for some of the best deals in computers, televisions and tablets."

Read more: Here's why we call the day after Thanksgiving 'Black Friday'

As for what people are buying online, it's dominated by three categories, according to Adobe: toys, video games, and other electronics.

The hottest toys so far have been L.O.L. Surprise! dolls, Fingerlings toys, and Little Live Pets. Video game consoles have also been popular, including the Nintendo Switch, NES Classic, and Xbox One X. The most popular tech purchases include digital cameras, which are seeing a resurgence, as well as the Amazon Fire TV and Amazon Echo.

"Big discounts are on the horizon in the coming days, and shoppers need not wait until Cyber Monday for some of the best deals in computers, televisions and tablets," Schreiner said.

There's some concern that shopping online on Black Friday is stealing some sales from Cyber Monday, as more people log online to shop on the day after Thanksgiving and retailers follow with compelling deals.

Adobe also reaffirmed its forecast of $124.1 billion to be spent online in November and December this year.

The most bizarre, outlandish documents from the CIA's files on JFK's assassination

JFK on dealey plaza

  • Thousands of previously classified files related to President John F. Kennedy's assassination have been released.
  • They detail things like Lee Harvey Oswald's activities leading up to the shooting, bizarre tip-offs before Kennedy's and Oswald's deaths, and the CIA's efforts to overthrow Fidel Castro.

President Donald Trump on Thursday approved the release of more than 2,800 previously classified documents related to the 1963 assassination of former President John F. Kennedy.

The trove of documents, released late on Thursday by the National Archives, offer up an array of details around the assassination itself, the ensuing investigation, and the government's foreign-policy endeavors.

Here are some highlights:

SEE ALSO: The US government planned to drop leaflets in Cuba encouraging people to kill Fidel Castro for just 2 cents

US officials wanted to offer just $0.02 for the killing of Fidel Castro.

One document details a plot orchestrated by Kennedy Administration officials— called Operation Bounty — which sought to offer various financial rewards to Cubans for "killing or delivering alive known Communists."

The main objectives for Operation Bounty were to overthrow the Cuban government and "to put pressure on Cuban Communists by creating distrust and disunity," according to the document.

The US planned to drop a series of leaflets throughout Cuba informing citizens of the rewards and explaining the terms. The proposed payments ranged from $100,000 for government officials and $57,700 for "department heads." Castro, however, appeared to merit a different reward.

"One final leaflet may be deemed advisable and that one announcing a .02¢ reward for the delivery of Castro," the document said.

Oswald met with a Soviet official affiliated with the KGB's 'Assassination Department' just weeks before shooting Kennedy.

Just weeks before Kennedy's assassination, Lee Harvey Oswald met with a known KGB officer at the Soviet Embassy in Mexico City, according to a CIA document.

The CIA learned of the meeting — which occurred on September 28, 1963 — through an October 1 phone call it intercepted between Oswald and an embassy guard.

The call revealed that Oswald had met with the consul, Valeriy Vladimirovich Kostikov, whom the CIA referred to as "an identified KGB officer" who was affiliated with the KGB's 13th Department, "responsible for sabotage and assassination."

During the call, Oswald spoke in broken Russian, identified himself by name, and asked the guard who answered the phone if there was "anything new concerning the telegram to Washington." According to the document describing the call, the guard checked and told Oswald that a request had been sent, but nothing had yet been received.

One FBI liaison officer speculated that Oswald's meeting with Kostikov at the embassy had been to "get Soviet support for a US passport or visa matter," the document said.

The document does not speculate or conclude that Oswald acted against Kennedy on Russian instructions or with KGB assistance.

A local newspaper in England got a bizarre tip-off just minutes before the assassination.

A British reporter for the Cambridge News received a phone call just 25 minutes before Kennedy was shot, and was instructed to "call the American Embassy in London for some big news" before the anonymous tipster hung up, according to an FBI document.

After the reporter learned of the assassination, he informed local police about the call, who passed the information along to MI5, Britain's domestic security agency. MI5 then informed the FBI of the call, and described the Cambridge News reporter as "a sound and loyal person with no security record."

The FBI appeared to take the information seriously — it was sent through to the highest levels of the agency, including then-Director J. Edgar Hoover.

The current staff of the Cambridge News appeared shocked on Friday after the document was released. The paper's political correspondent Josh Thomas tweeted that staff will "get to the bottom of this."

Alexa's getting a news anchor speaking voice so it can read headlines to you like a pro — listen here

Amazon echo

  • Amazon has developed a new voice for its AI-assistant Alexa which sounds more like a news anchor, The Verge reports.
  • It did this by training neural text-to-speech technology on audio recordings of real newsreaders to pick up on their inflections and nuances.
  • The result is still a little robotic, but recognisably more like a newsreader than Alexa's standard voice.

Amazon has been working on a new voice for Alexa to make it sound more like a news anchor, which it says customers prefer when listening to the AI-assistant reading out headlines.

The Verge reports that Amazon developed this new voice by combining neural text-to-speech technology (or NTTS) with recording audio clips from real newscasters.

Here's Alexa regular voice, reading an article about the Grand Central terminal opening in San Francisco:

Listen here to Amazon's NTTS-trained newsreader voice:

The result is still somewhat robotic, but includes some of the inflections often used by newsreaders.

Trevor Wood, who oversees the application of AI in text-to-speech at Amazon, told The Verge: "It's difficult to describe these nuances precisely in words, and a data-driven approach can discover and generalize these more efficiently than a human."

Amazon said it only required a few hours of data to teach Alexa to talk like a newscaster. It will be launching the new voice on enabled devices in a few weeks' time.

Thanks to the increasing number of people who want to be able to shop online in their pajamas, there is no shortage of direct-to-consumer digital companies, and a healthy percentage of them are mattress startups. Why? Because you don't have to go lay down on 15 beds while someone follows you around trying to sell you upgrades, there's usually no exorbitant delivery fee, and you get to try it out in your home without any pressure for 100 nights (as the new industry standard goes). So really, why not?

There are a lot of great direct-to-consumer mattress options to consider, and Leesa Sleep is one of them. We ranked Leesa's Sapira Mattress and Leesa Mattress as the best mattresses you can buy overall because they suit all sleeping styles. So did The Wirecutter.

They also happen to be running their Black Friday deal right now — making their already accessible prices even better. Right now, you can get a new Leesa mattress for up to $235 off its original price. You'll also receive the classic Leesa Pillow ($75) that took them a few years and hundreds of prototypes to make for free.

Leesa's Black Friday deals:

If you need a new foundation, too, you can also get $75 off the Leesa Platform Bed (now $720 for queen size) and $100 off the company's adjustable base (now $945 for queen size). You can find a review for the adjustable base here.

We've reviewed both their newly updated classic Leesa mattress as well as their luxury Sapira option, but the break down is pretty simple.

Leesa has done so well in a saturated direct-to-consumer mattress space thanks to its excellent customer service model and a universally comfortable mattress. The company claims its mattress can comfortably accommodate all body shapes and types of sleepers, and that because of its unique design, you don't have to choose between either plush or firm. In person, we liked them so much we ranked the Leesa mattresses best in our comprehensive Buying Guide, and we have similarly positive views of the Hybrid Pillow ($125) and Leesa blanket ($149), which reporter Lulu Chang called one of the most well-made, comfortable blankets she'd ever used after testing.

It's also a certified B Corp that has donated more than 30,000 mattresses to those in need and plants one tree for every mattress sold.

Skip the awkward showroom, get your mattress delivered to your door, and spend 100 nights risk-free trying it out. No pressure. If you're looking for a new mattress, you might want to check out Leesa's options right now considering how heavily they're marked down.

  • If you're set on eating out on Thanksgiving, make sure to call ahead to ask about the restaurant's hours.

But if you'd rather go out to eat — or you end up burning the turkey to a crisp — don't worry. A number of restaurants will remain open on Thanksgiving.

Offers.com compiled a list of restaurants that are set to open their doors on Thanksgiving. Keep in mind that some of these chains will only be open on a regional basis. Others may be closed depending on the franchisee.

So, if you're planning on spending Turkey Day at one of these eateries, it's better to be safe and call ahead.

With that in mind, here are restaurants that are going to be open in some capacity on Thanksgiving:

The US is asking the world to say no to Chinese tech-giant Huawei

  • The US government has begun to rally its allies against Chinese tech giant Huawei, fearing its close ties to the Chinese government.
  • Officials working for President Donald Trump's administration have briefed key allies about the national security concerns posed by Huawei, which was founded by a former People's Liberation Army major.
  • The Wall Street Journal reported that the administration is also considering offering financial aid to countries that step up and block Huawei.
  • The outreach over Huawei comes as the world shifts to adapt to the US's new confrontational posture against China.

The US has begun what the Wall Street Journal calls "an extraordinary outreach program" in an effort to rally its allies against allowing the Chinese tech giant Huawei to gain access to essential infrastructure.

Officials from President Donald Trump's administration have reportedly sought and briefed an array of partners and allies, from government counterparts to high-tech communications firms, following a crystallization of national security concerns over the intentions and capabilities of the Chinese telecommunications giant.

Huawei, founded by Ren Zhengfei a former officer in the People's Liberation Army, is now the world's No. 2 smartphone manufacturer after South Korea's Samsung.

The Journal reported that so far, the US has briefed Germany, Italy, and Japan.

US officials also told the outlet that the administration is considering offering financial  aid to countries that step up and block Huawei.

The US has slapped tariffs on billions of dollars of Chinese imports, drawing swift retaliation from the Chinese government.

The US has also tightened up foreign-investment rules targeting Chinese deal making and its major allies are starting to come on board.

Europe this week stepped up its scrutiny of Foreign Direct Investment specifically out of China, after absorbing almost double the amount of Chinese money that was invested in the US over the last decade.

Americans have been told repeatedly to steer clear of Chinese-made Huawei and ZTE branded smartphones — intelligence officials and lawmakers share grave doubts over the opaque intentions of such firms and their cozy relationships with the Chinese government.

An obligation to the state

According to Danielle Cave of the Australian Strategic Policy Institute (ASPI), anyone who doubts the Chinese Communist Party's grip on state firms and the essential unsuitability of Huawei to participate in communications infrastructure projects needs to get familiar with Article 7 of China’s 2017 National Intelligence Law (国家情报法).

The law states:

"All organizations and citizens shall, in accordance with the law, support, cooperate with, and collaborate in national intelligence work, and guard the secrecy of national intelligence work they are aware of..."

"The state will protect individuals and organizations that support, cooperate with, and collaborate in national intelligence work."

According to Cave, even if a Chinese company had "the best of intentions," the law makes it clear what their duty is whenever opportunity should arise.

"A company might have the best of intentions—work hard, foster a good reputation, make a profit—but this law undercuts those intentions by making it clear that Chinese organisations are expected to support, cooperate with and collaborate in national intelligence work," Cave said. "They must also keep the intelligence work they’re aware of a secret."

The US's push, which was reportedly seeded before the current administration took over, reflects the fears of many analysts that Chinese firms operating in bad faith might embed themselves just as the next-gen wireless 5G network is rolled out worldwide.

Some US officials fear the rise of such centrally-organized technological giants could empower authoritarian governments, potentially turning irritants into outright foes, The Journal reported.

  • Macy's, JCPenney, and Kohl's are being slammed for opening their doors on Thanksgiving.
  • On Thursday, Twitter lit up with complaints about retailers encroaching on the holiday and calling for shoppers to boycott these stores.
  • This year, at least 77 retailers — including CostcoTJ Maxx, and Nordstrom— said they would keep stores closed on Thanksgiving.

Customers are revolting against Thanksgiving opening hours.

Several retailers including Macy's, JCPenney, Kohl's, and Best Buy have opened their doors on Thanksgiving to offer early Black Friday deals, and in the eyes of some customers, it's backfiring.

On Thursday, Twitter lit up with complaints about retailers encroaching on this sacred day and many customers asked for fellow shoppers to boycott thes stores.

According to data gathered by BestBlackFriday.com, at least 77 retailers said they would keep stores closed during Thanksgiving this year, the highest number recorded since it started collecting the data. Several told the website that this was because they wanted to give employees time to spend with family.

Other stores, such as REI, are even staying closed for Black Friday.

"It's the right ethical move. It's the right business move," REI CEO Jerry Stritzke told Business Insider. "I think retail for brands is about community."

"If you're open on Thanksgiving, it's hard not to pitch yourself as a greedy bastard," he said.

Stritzke said that retailers have put themselves in an uncomfortable position by competing purely on value. Winning customers based solely on lower prices or on opening earlier, he said, builds a transactional relationship that can easily be undercut and leave retailers scrambling.

Thanksgiving has suddenly become one of America's favorite days to shop online

Thanksgiving shopping

  • This Thanksgiving Day is set to smash online sales records from previous years.
  • Thanksgiving Day is predicted to reach a record $3.7 billion in online retail sales, up a whopping 29% from 2017, according to Adobe Analytics.
  • Customers are turning to their phones increasingly to shop online, especially on a traditionally busy day filled with familial obligations.
  • Sales started earlier this year, going live the night before Thanksgiving at popular destinations like Walmart.
  • Other stores, like Amazon, have been running sales for nearly a week.

Thanksgiving is fast becoming one of America's favorite days to shop online.

Already, US shoppers have spent $1.75 billion online on Thanksgiving (as of 5 p.m.), according to Adobe Analytics, and are predicted to spend a record $3.7 billion by midnight.

That's up a whopping 29% when compared to 2017. That's a far larger increase than the increases expected for Black Friday and Cyber Monday: 17.2% and 17.6% growth year over year, respectively.

Much of the growth has come from smartphones, which shoppers are using with increasing frequency, especially on Thanksgiving, according to Adobe. This year, smartphones have accounted for 36.7% of all sales, up substantially over the 29.1% share in 2017.

"Mobile stole the show Thanksgiving Day with smartphones representing more than 50% of traffic to retail sites, as well as record amount of revenue," Taylor Schreiner, director of Adobe Digital Insights, said in a prepared statement. "As consumers turn their focus to Black Friday, we expect them to take full advantage of the many discounts available, driving new records for online sales."

Many online sales started earlier this year, which may have contributed to the drastically larger numbers. Walmart started its Black Friday sales the night before Thanksgiving, while Amazon has been offering Black Friday sales the entire week leading up to the vaunted day.

Black Friday is starting earlier than ever — and companies like Walmart and Lululemon weren't ready (WMT, LULU)

  • Black Friday kicked off earlier than ever this year.
  • Online sales on Wednesday hit $2.4 billion, a 31.8% increase from 2017. As of 5 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day, shoppers had spent another $1.75 billion online, up 28.6% from last year.
  • The explosive growth in online sales creates problems for some retailers, as companies including Walmart, GameStop, and Lululemon dealt with technical difficulties online on Thursday.

Black Friday now officially starts on the Wednesday before and in the wee hours of Thanksgiving morning. And, that's not necessarily good news for retailers.

Shoppers spent $2.4 billion online on Wednesday, a whopping 31.8% increase from 2017, according to Adobe Analytics data.

By 10 a.m. Thursday morning, shoppers had spent another $406 million online. By 5 p.m., they'd spent $1.75 billion, representing 28.6% growth compared to last year.

The skyrocketing sales represent an increase in online shopping more generally, as well as a Black Friday sales "day" that is shifting earlier and earlier.

"Pre-Thanksgiving deals appear to have enticed consumers to spend a little earlier as we saw our second $2 billion day of the holiday shopping season," Taylor Schreiner, Adobe Digital Insights' director, said in a statement.

However, not every retailer was fully prepared for the increase in shopping on Thanksgiving Day and the day before.

The downside of success

black friday

Shoppers on Walmart's website dealt with technical difficulties on Wednesday evening. GameStopshopperscomplained about similartech issues on social media. And, Lululemon's website crashed on Thursday, apparently buckling under traffic.

"We knew it would be a busy day, and I suppose technology got away from us this time around," Lululemon's account responded on Facebook. "I totally understand that this can be frustrating as someone trying to shop online, and know that we're doing everything we can to rectify the situation as soon as possible. "

According to Bob Buffone, chief technology officer at web optimization software company Yottaa, companies' problems were likely rooted in not having the infrastructure to handle the traffic.

"If you have not load tested your site at five times normal traffic volumes, your site will probably fail," Buffone told Business Insider on Thursday.

Not being properly prepared for Black Friday is even worse than having a site crash on any other shopping day.

"It's easy to go to a different site and spend their holiday money elsewhere," Buffone said. "Depending on how long the site is down, it can cost retailers a lot of money and also result in damage to the brand as shoppers take to social media to express their frustration."

In addition to technical issues, earlier shopping can mean deals selling out earlier. Doorbusters are, by nature, limited. But, earlier sales canalsomeanthings sellingoutearlier— which can result in frustration for shoppers who are used to a more traditional Black Friday shopping schedule.

This set of app-controlled string lights lets you add custom colors and designs to your Christmas tree

twinkly lights

  • It's almost holiday time, and we're already thinking about how to decorate.
  • This year, I got a set of app-controlled Twinkly LED lights that allow you to create custom lighting schemes on your tree or walls.
  • At $48 (currently on sale) for the smallest set, they're not cheap —but they're incredibly cool and fun to play around with.

The holidays officially begin on the day you start listening to Christmas music — and once you do, it's only a matter of time before you start itching to hang up lights and decorate your home.

Much to my partner's chagrin, I started listening to Christmas music in August — so I've been excited to start plastering our apartment with twinkly lights, stockings, holiday decor, and pine-scented candles for months. For what it's worth, I'm actually Jewish...it's just that I never celebrated Christmas growing up, so getting to experience that with my partner now always makes me extra excited to join in on the holiday cheer.

This year, I'm most excited to get to wrap my tree with these app-controlled LED lights that allow us to switch up the colors and patterns of the bulbs.

twinkle lights

Aptly named "Twinkly," these are a fun twist on the traditional string lights you've probably been using all your life. Plus, they're pretty easy to use.

All you have to do is download the app and connect your lights via WiFi, and you'll be able to play around with all the colorful pre-sets as well as design your own custom schemes. You can choose everything from colors to whether or not the lights should twinkle, move in waves, or stay as-is.

The set I tested out was designed to be wrapped around a tree, so the algorithm is designed such that your lights will align with the triangle shape of the tree. To be fair, you should know that I don't currently have my tree up (unfortunately), so I tested these in my apartment just draped over the media center. I'll update this article as soon as I have them wrapped around my tree, but suffice it to say that they work just as well strung along a flat surface.

twinkly lights2

Another feature I like about the Twinkly lights and app is there's a timer so you never accidentally leave the lights on overnight, and you have the ability to turn them on and off from your phone. Twinkly also makes a "curtain" version of the lights, which will give you the option to adjust the layout in the app if you set them up sideways or in any other direction.

I'd be remiss not to mention that these lights aren't cheap. The more bulbs you opt for, the more expensive the kit, but if you love techy things and like the idea of being able to customize the lighting arrangements, it's definitely worth it for the entertainment alone.

Twinkly App-Controlled String Lights with 56 LEDs, available at Thinkgeek, $47.99

Twinkly App-Controlled String Lights with 105 LEDs, available on Amazon, $99

Twinkly App-Controlled Curtain Lights, available on Amazon, $154.95

Saudi crown prince goes on a tour abroad as the investigation into Jamal Khashoggi's murder is closing in

Salman bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud Mohammed bin Salman

  • Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has embarked on his first trip abroad following the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi.
  • His trip comes as the investigations into journalist Jamal Khashoggi's murder are closing in.
  • Saudi Arabia has said the prince had no prior knowledge of the murder of the prominent Saudi journalist. But Turkey says the CIA has a "smoking gun" tape nailing the prince to Khashoggi's case.

ABU DHABI (Reuters) - Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman arrived in the United Arab Emirates on Thursday at the start of a tour of several Arab countries, his first trip abroad since the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi that caused a global outcry.

The prince, the country’s de facto ruler, is also expected to participate in a G20 meeting in Buenos Aires at the end of the month which will be attended by leaders from the United States, Turkey and European countries.

The killing of Khashoggi, a Washington Post columnist and a critic of the crown prince, at Riyadh’s consulate in Istanbul six weeks ago has strained Saudi Arabia’s ties with the West and battered Prince Mohammed’s image abroad.

King Salman asked his chosen heir, known in the West as MBS, to conduct the tour “based on his keenness to deepen the kingdom’s ties regionally and internationally”, the Saudi Press Agency reported.

Prince Mohammed was greeted upon his arrival in the neighbouring UAE by Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed al-Nayhan, a close ally of MBS.

“We’re proud of our deep-rooted ties. Close cooperation and a fruitful partnership lies in store for our countries. The UAE will always be a loving and supportive home for our brothers in Saudi Arabia,” Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed said in a Twitter post.

Tunisian newspaper, Business News, said he is expected to visit Tunisia on Tuesday.

Saudi Arabia has said the prince had no prior knowledge of the murder of the prominent Saudi journalist. After offering numerous contradictory explanations, Riyadh said last week Khashoggi had been killed and his body dismembered when negotiations to persuade him to return to Saudi Arabia failed.

Turkey’s President Tayyip Erdogan has said the killing was ordered by the highest level of Saudi leadership but probably not from King Salman, putting the spotlight instead on the 33-year-old crown prince.

U.S. President Donald Trump said on Tuesday Washington would remain a “steadfast partner” of Saudi Arabia despite saying that Prince Mohammed may have known about the plan to murder Khashoggi.

Shoppers using smartphones under the dinner table have made Thanksgiving one of the biggest days for online shopping

smartphone shopping online

  • Smartphone use for both browsing and shopping online has exploded this Thanksgiving.
  • They have contributed 54.4% of all traffic to retail sites so far on Thanksgiving Day, versus 46.1% last year, and they facilitated 36.7% of all sales this year versus 29.1% last year.
  • Mobile shopping has helped make Thanksgiving one of the largest sales days online by revenue for retailers.
  • The use of phones may be due to retailers offering sales on a day with many familial obligations as so-called "Black Friday creep" continues to impact all of online shopping.

Thanksgiving Day hosts are seeing a new uninvited guest over for dinner in recent years: Black Friday sales.

Smartphone use for both browsing and shopping online is exploding this Thanksgiving, according to Adobe Analytics. Shoppers are predicted to spend a record $3.7 billion online by midnight — up a whopping 29% when compared to 2017 — thanks in large part to smartphone shopping.

Smartphone shopping has been increasing dramatically in recent years, especially on Thanksgiving. The holiday is becoming one of the most popular days to shop online. Shoppers now have the means — thanks to the proliferation of smartphones equipped with stores' apps — and the opportunity, as retailers make their stores open earlier and earlier.

Many online sales started earlier this year, which may have contributed to the drastically larger numbers. Walmart started its Black Friday sales online the night before Thanksgiving, while Amazon has been offering Black Friday sales for the entire week leading up to the vaunted day.

Retailers' apps have also gotten much better, according to a customer survey by Synchrony Financial earlier this year.
