A worker at John Wayne Airport in Orange County, California, was killed on Tuesday when a tire on which he was doing maintenance work exploded, the Associated Press reported.

The incident took place Tuesday evening around 11:30 p.m. local time inside a workshop in the airport's terminal building, the local CBS News affiliate, KCBS reported.

The force of the blast ruptured a pipe in the workshop and set off its sprinkler system but did not have any effect on airport operations beyond that.

One worker was killed while the other did not require medical treatment, the AP reported.

According to KCBS, the unidentified workers were not employees of John Wayne Airport. Instead, they worked for a contractor called JBT.
