In the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, gas lines are stretching for miles in New Jersey, and some taxi and car services are running out of fuel and shutting down, according to Reuters.

The situation is set to get worse until more gas can be brought into the city.

Until then, the priority for fuel reserves is for medical and emergency vehicles, Deputy Commissioner for Public Affairs at the Taxi and Limousine Commission Allan Fromberg said in an e-mail.

One result is that drivers of hybrid taxis are still on the road in large numbers, taking advantage of the enormous demand among New Yorkers with limited access to public transportation.
