Donald Tusk says there is a 'special place in hell' for Brexit campaigners

Theresa May Donald Tusk

  • European Council President Donald Tusk makes inflammatory remarks about those backing Brexit in the UK.
  • He says there is a "special place in hell" for those who campaigned for the EU.
  • Tusk also lashes out at those who failed to persuade the British people to stay in the UK, saying there is "no effective leadership for Remain.
  • He also rules out renegotiating May's Brexit deal ahead of her arrival in Brussels.

European Council President Donald Tusk has lashed out at Brexiteers in the UK, saying there is now a "special place in hell" for those who campaigned to leave the EU.

"I've been wondering what that special place in hell looks like for those who promoted Brexit without even a sketch of a plan how to carry it out safely," Tusk said.

Tusk made the inflammatory comments at a joint press conference in Brussels with the Irish Taoiseach Leo Varadkar, in which he also lashed out at those who had failed to persuade the British people to remain in the EU.

"At the moment the pro-Brexit stance of the UK prime minister and the leader of the opposition rules out this question [of remaining]," he said

"Today there is no political force and no effective leadership for Remain."

Theresa May is due to arrive in Brussels for talks with senior EU leaders on Thursday, following the rejection of her Brexit deal with the EU, by the UK House of Commons.

However, Tusk  ruled out any prospect of renegotiating the Brexit deal, saying it was "not open for renegotiation."

He added that he hoped May would arrive for talks with a "sensible" suggestion to "break the impasse."

Following Tusk's comments a microphone picked up Varadkar telling him he would face "terrible trouble in the British press" for them.

The row comes as the prime minister prepares for a new set of parliamentary votes on Brexit next week.

May lost a vote on her Brexit deal by a majority of 230 votes last month and has yet to confirm when the deal will be brought back before the Commons.

The Bank of England has refused to give back $1.56 billion in Venezuelan gold after countries around the world say the regime is illegitimate

  • The Bank of England has reportedly frozen £1.2 billion ($1.56 billion) of the gold reserves it holds for the Venezuelan regime just days after the UK and other European leaders recognised Juan Gauidó as the country's leader.
  • Venezuela has been crippled by high levels of poverty and inflation under Nicolas Maduro's government, which has been aggressively selling its gold reserves to raise funds.
  • A number of countries, including the US, have now called for regime change in Venezuela as the economic situation worsens.

The Bank of England is said to have frozen Venezuelan gold assets worth $1.56 billion in another blow to Nicolas Maduro's government.

Venezuela has been trying to repatriate its gold reserves, which the Bank of England holds, since late last year. Citing civil service officials, The Times reports the UK's central bank has now frozen access to those reserves.

It comes after Juan Gauidó wrote to UK Prime Minister Theresa May and Bank of England Governor Mark Carney, asking them not to grant Maduro access to Venezuelan gold reserves at the bank.

Venezuela's government has been aggressively selling its gold reserves in order to fundraise as the country's currency, the bolivar, becomes increasingly obsolete as inflation passes the 1,600,000% mark. The US recognised opposition leader Juan Gauidó as the country's legitimate leader last week, and a number of European countries followed suit soon after.

The situation in the country has become increasingly stark with Venezuelan citizens suffering from poverty and weight loss as well as increased violent crime. Some citizens have been driven to illegally mine for gold in the country's national parks just to afford basic foods such as rice.

Maduro has refused calls to hold new elections this year from the US and EU. Tens of thousands of people have been protesting his regime over the past few months. Maduro has presided over one of the worst economic crises, leading to hundreds of thousands of refugees fleeing Venezuela.

R. Kelly has announced a tour in Australia, but politicians are concerned about letting him into the country

r. kelly

  • R. Kelly announced a tour of Australia, New Zealand, and Sri Lanka on social media.
  • However, the posts have now been deleted.
  • A spokesperson from tour company Flamingo Dreamz told INSIDER the tour will go ahead in June but management were told to take down the posts until "everything is sorted."
  • Politicians in Australia have voiced concerns about letting the R&B singer into the country.
  • Since a documentary about sexual abuse allegations against Kelly aired, artists have been coming forward to distance themselves from him.

On February 5, R. Kelly announced a tour around Australia, New Zealand, and Sri Lanka despite the fact he's still facing scrutiny over sexual abuse allegations that have been brought to light since the documentary "Surviving R. Kelly" was aired.

Kelly posted a picture on his Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook pages with the caption "NEW TOUR ALERT Australia New Zealand Sri Lanka see y’all soon!" but it has since been deleted.

In the new documentary, several women detail their alleged experiences of Kelly, including that he controlled them and even held them hostage. However, Kelly has vehemently denied all accusations.

Read more:12 of the most shocking allegations from 'Surviving R. Kelly'

In December 2018, rumours of a tour first surfaced, but Kelly denied them, saying the promotions were fake.

"FAKE TOUR ALERT," he wrote on his social media pages. "While I love all my amazing Fans in the Australia region I am NOT involved in this tour nor do I have knowledge of it, its promoters, etc. I will NOT be in Australia during these dates."

He added that fans should watch his social media because his next tour would be announced by him, and they would "hear it directly from me."

But according to promoters Big Music Tour, the tour was supposed to take place. Fairfax reported it was cancelled due to the controversy surrounding Kelly,

"Big Music Tour can confirm contracts were in place with R. Kelly and his management for the Australian tour. We have been in discussion regarding the bizarre social media post denying the tour and had been working towards a resolution," the company said.

"However, given the current situation in R. Kelly's personal life and the controversy surrounding him, the promoters have decided not to move forward and are focusing on other events."

The latest tour is being promoted by Flamingo Dreamz, according to the now deleted social media posts. But there is no advertisement of the tour on the company's website.

A spokesperson from Flamingo Dreamz told INSIDER: "Yes the tour will go ahead in June. We told the management to take down the posts 'til everything is sorted."

According to the Guardian, politicians have voiced concerns about Kelly entering Australia.

"Labor strongly supports the refusal or cancellation of visas of non-citizens on character or criminal grounds," said Australia’s shadow immigration minister. "Labor would be seriously concerned if immigration minister David Coleman would allow an individual such as R Kelly into Australia."

A spokesperson for Australia's home affairs department told the Guardian it did not comment on individual cases, but all non-citizens have to meet certain requirements, and "there are strong provisions under the Act to refuse or cancel a visa where a person is found not to be of good character."

Musicians who have worked with Kelly in the past have been coming forward to show their support for his victims since the documentary aired. Chance the Rapper said it was a mistake ever to work with him, tweeting "I apologize to all of his survivors for working with him, and for taking this long to speak out."

Lady Gaga said she supports and believes the women coming forward, and vowed to remove the song she collaborated with Kelly on, "Do What U Want," from streaming services.

Khabib Nurmagomedov's manager says a rematch between him and 'piece of s---' Conor McGregor 'will happen in the street'

Khabib Nurmagomedov and Conor McGregor rematch

  • Conor McGregor is a "piece of s---" and a "scumbag," according to his recent opponent Khabib Nurmagomedov's manager.
  • Ali Abdelaziz had choice words for the Irishman when discussing future options for his client.
  • One of those options is a rematch against McGregor, a fighter he defeated with ease in October 2018.
  • The bout has been talked up by the UFC boss Dana White.
  • But the rematch does not have to take place in an Octagon, Abdelaziz said.
  • He warned McGregor to "beef up" his security as the fight could "happen in the street, parking garage, under the bridge."

Khabib Nurmagomedov was recently slapped with a nine-month backdated ban from fighting, but that may not stop him from rematching Conor McGregor "in the street."

That is according to Ali Abdelaziz, Nurmagomedov's manager, who had choice words for McGregor when he called the Irishman "a full-blown piece of s--- scumbag," during a recent interview with TMZ Sports.

The pair famously fought at UFC 229, when Nurmagomedov submitted McGregor with a tight neck crank in the fourth round of a wild bout in October 2018.

Rather than celebrate his stoppage win, Nurmagomedov leaped over the fence and charged at McGregor's cage-side friend Dillon Danis. While that was going on, members of Nurmagomedov's team were seen invading the Octagon and exchanging punches with McGregor.

The Nevada State Athletic Commission have given both athletes suspensions for the parts they played in the incident, at a recent disciplinary hearing.

Though McGregor is free to fight from April 7 onwards, Nurmagomedov was handed a nine-month ban which could be reduced to six (the same as McGregor's) should he film and distribute an anti-bullying public service announcement.

A rematch in the Octagon has been talked up by the UFC, as the company president Dana White said it "should happen" in 2019.

Read more:Conor McGregor's rematch against Khabib Nurmagomedov 'should happen' this year, UFC boss says

But Octagon or no Octagon, it may be a quarrel that happens "in the street, in the parking garage, under a bridge," Abdelaziz said.

He told TMZ Sports: "Conor McGregor is a f------ full-blown piece of s--- scumbag. That's what people want. All the trailer trash… a guy related to them."

Ali Abdelaziz, Khabib Nurmagomedov's manager, who is he

The Nevada commission alluded to a possible policing of the way fighters conduct themselves and the things they say to promote fights, but Abdelaziz said "let them talk," adding that the more McGregor talks, "the more he gonna get whooped."

Abdelaziz said: "Bro, this fight will happen in the street, parking garage, under the bridge. This s--- is not over. Especially when you keep running your mouth." In a final warning, he added: "This dude better beef up security everywhere he goes."

Abdelaziz is no stranger to controversy as he has long adopted an abrasive attitude in previous statements. After his client Nurmagomedov's stunning win over McGregor and the post-fight riots that followed, he simply said "s--- happens."

He later said McGregor should consider quitting fighting forever and just open up a liquor store, before claiming Nurmagomedov had the power to knock Floyd Mayweather down should the Russian cross over into the boxing world and challenge the unbeaten American — like McGregor unsuccessfully tried to do in 2017.

It is unclear who Nurmagomedov will return against should he fight this year, but McGregor has been linked with a lot of fighters, including old rival Nate Diaz. However, he looks increasingly likely to comeback against Donald "Cowboy" Cerrone, who is the winningest fighter in UFC history.

White previously acknowledged that McGregor and Cerrone wanted to fight, and said the match-up would be "fun."

6 affordable products that have helped me deal with back pain and muscle tension

Chronic back and neck pain is not something I thought I'd be dealing with at the age of 27.

It's an awful feeling, but one that I've been determined to mitigate. Almost every day, I find myself not just lamenting my own discomfort, but actively seeking ways to manage it. This can be a stressful and emotional process, fraught with panic and uncertainty (Is this a waste of money? Will this really help my pain?). If you also deal with chronic pain, or even just muscle tension or soreness in your back, I'm sure you've experienced these feelings too — at least to some degree.

Though there's no one-size-fits-all solution for dealing with pain since it varies so widely from person to person, I thought it might still be helpful to share a list of some of the products that have really helped me and others in dealing with discomfort, be it chronic or acute. Hopefully they'll help you find some relief like they've done for me.

The BetterBack

$49.99, available on Amazon

I am a huge fan of the BetterBack, which I discovered while watching "Shark Tank" at home. Though it looks a little silly to have on (almost like a rock climbing harness), it's actually incredibly effective at correcting posture and removing back pain while you're seated.

There's a soft pad that rests behind your back and a connects to a set of straps that are placed over your knees. It uses the tension from the straps to correct your posture and relieve pressure from improper spinal alignment, effectively eliminating discomfort.

I use mine almost every day while sitting at my desk, and it has kept me from having near meltdowns from back pain at work.

Zyllion Shiatsu Pillow Massager

$49.95, available on Amazon

Back pain comes in all different forms, but for me personally, it's exacerbated and amplified by the intense muscle tension in my shoulders. Tension can affect posture and alignment, and can make injuries like slipped discs feel more excruciating. Even if you don't have any sort of spinal issues, it's likely that you've experienced the discomfort of shoulder tension simply from to sitting at a computer all day or working a stressful job. If that's the case, you should keep reading.

Since I can't afford to spend $200 on massage therapy every week, I decided instead to spend $40 on this at-home shiatsu massager, which was maybe one of my best purchases ever. With two heated notes per side that continually rotate, changing directions every few minutes, you'll feel like you're getting a deep tissue massage right in the comfort of your own home. It melts away the stress and tension, and leaves me feeling so much more relaxed. Just keep in mind that if you use it for too long, it can cause bruising — so start with just one cycle at a time.

Read more about my experience with the Zyllion at-home shiatsu massager here.

ProSource Acupressure Mat and Pillow Set

$17.20, available on Amazon

You can read about the science of how and why these mats work in my review below, but I'll just say that the mat really does help with my tension — it just may be for a different reason than advertised. After speaking with a doctor, it seems that this mat, which is covered in shallow plastic spikes, can help with pain by essentially distracting your brain from other types of discomfort.

Personally, I've found that after laying on it either bare-back or with a thin shirt on, I end up experiencing a wave of relaxation that makes me feel like I just woke up from a nap. If you can imagine that blissful feeling when you sink into a hot bath and feel your stress melt away gently — that's sort of what it's like to sit up after 30 minutes of lying on this mat.

Putin's much-hyped nuclear-powered cruise missile still isn't working right as Russia restarts testing

Russian President Vladimir Putin test firing the Chukavin SVCh sniper rifle in September 2018.

  • Russia is again testing its Burevestnik nuclear-powered cruise missile, according to The Diplomat.
  • The first test of the year and the thirteenth test overall took place on Jan. 29. The result was characterized as "partially successful," indicating that problems persist.
  • The arms race between the US and Russia is heating up over conflicts on missile defense and the end of a nuclear arms agreement.

Russia is reportedly back to testing its much-hyped nuclear-powered cruise missile after a pause last summer.

The Russians on Jan. 29 tested the Burevestnik cruise missile, which is reportedly powered by nuclear reaction; it's NATO designation is SSC-X-9 SKYFALL, The Diplomat reported Tuesday, citing US government sources with knowledge of Russia's weapons programs.

The test, the first of this year and the thirteenth overall, was apparently only "partially successful," The Diplomat explained, meaning that the weapon still doesn't work. No country has fielded a nuclear-powered cruise missile, although the US briefly flirted with the idea decades ago.

US intelligence assesses that Russia has only had one moderately successful test, and it resulted in the Russians having to send out ships to find the missile, which was lost at sea after it was test-fired in November 2017. Last March, Russian President Vladimir Putin boasted that the missile was "invincible," asserting that the powerful weapon has "an unlimited range, unpredictable trajectory and ability to bypass interception."

Read More: Putin lost his supposedly ‘invulnerable’ nuclear-powered missile at sea — now he has to go find it

The latest test comes on the heels of the release of the Trump administration's Missile Defense Review, which emphasizes the advancements being made by strategic competitors China and Russia. The Russian Foreign Ministry warned that America's actions "will inevitably start an arms race," yielding "the most negative consequences for international security and stability."

The ongoing testing appears to be part of an arms race that may have just been kicked into high gear by US withdrawal from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty, a Cold War nuclear arms agreement that the Trump administration ripped up last Friday over allegations that Russia violated the pact.

Read More: Trump is ripping up the INF Treaty, ending a key Cold War nuclear arms pact with Russia

President Trump warned the US will "move forward with developing our own military response" to Russian developments.

"We will respond quid pro quo," Putin stated in response to US moves. "Our American partners have announced they were suspending their participation in the treaty, and we will do the same. They have announced they will conduct research and development, and we will act accordingly.

Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu announced Tuesday that Russia will develop a new land-based cruise missile (a variant of the sea-launched Kalibr missiles) and a hypersonic missile by 2021.

Target is growing its new loyalty program that offers personalized benefits to members (TGT)

Target is expanding a new loyalty program that offers personalized benefits to members, CNBC reports. Dubbed “Target Circle,” the program has been piloting in Dallas but will become available in Charlotte, Denver, Indianapolis, Kansas City, and Phoenix on February 19.

Target's Digital Sales

The program is free to join and offers perks like 1% back on Target purchases, a birthday reward, shipping benefits, and a chance to have a say about which local nonprofits Target should donate to.

The value that Target Circle offers seems to be geared toward helping entice customers to engage more deeply and regularly with Target. For starters, the program is free for customers to join, contrary to Amazon Prime, for example, which costs $119 per year. This means that, beyond sharing information with the retailer, there's virtually no obstacle to joining. Additionally, besides the generally useful 1% back on Target purchases, the benefits Target Circle offers fall into two main categories:

  • Benefits that make the program feel more personalized for members, amplifying loyalty. Target says that the rewards given to customers on their birthdays will be customized based on their shopping history, potentially helping the reward feel like a thoughtful gift from the retailer. Also, allowing customers to choose where Target directs funds for nonprofits may help Target Circle members feel like they have a say in the way the company impacts their communities. Making Target Circle feel more personal and targeted could give Target a leg up with consumers, as 79% only consider brands that show they care and understand and 56% are loyal to brands that understand their priorities and preferences, according to Wantedness.
  • Perks that lower barriers to using some of Target’s unique delivery services, driving repeat business. Circle members get free next-day delivery of consumer packaged goods (CPGs) and essentials via Target Restock (which usually costs $2.99 per order), as well as the option to sign up for a one-year membership to Target’s same-day delivery service, Shipt, for $50 (a 50% discount). Restock is one of the fastest CPG delivery options available, so free access via a free loyalty program is a significant benefit. Furthermore, access to Shipt for a year for $50 could encourage Circle members to give it a try because of its price advantage compared with similar services like Instacart ($99 per year). If customers learn to depend on these services, they will make more consistent purchases with Target as opposed to its competitors.

The US trade deficit tumbled to a 5-month low in November

china trade

  • The gap between the goods the US exports and imports fell to a five-month low in November.
  • Lower oil prices and tariffs likely contributed to the decline.
  • The politically-sensitive gap with China also narrowed.

The monthly US trade deficit narrowed in November after increasing for five straight months, including with China.

The overall gap between the number of goods the US imports and exports fell more than 11% to $49.3 billion from a $55.5 billion a month earlier, the Commerce Department said Tuesday. That was its lowest level since June and well below expectations for a $54 billion deficit.

Some of the unexpected plunge could be explained by lower oil prices, which shed more than a third of their value at the end of 2017. Non-oil exports dipped 0.4%, while non-oil imports fell 2.9%. President Donald Trump's trade wars could have also been responsible for the decline, said Ian Shepherdson, chief economist at Pantheon Macroeconomics.

The US-China trade deficit also shrank $2.8 billion to $35.4 billion in November, likely affected by the tariffs on hundreds of billions of dollars worth products Washington and Beijing levied last year.

"To be clear, the underlying trends in both the bilateral deficit with China and the U.S.'s overall trade deficit are rising, because domestic supply can't keep pace with domestic demand growth, and net trade is still likely to be a drag on Q4 GDP growth," Shepherdson said.

The goods trade deficit with Beijing had hit an all-time high of $43.1 billion in October, with Chinese shipments to the US up by nearly a tenth from a year earlier. That balance has likely been impacted by waves of frontloading, or companies rushing orders to avoid duties.

Andrew Hunter, senior US economist at Capital Economics, said November's reversal is unlikely to last for long, however.

"Along with the appreciation of the dollar last year, the slowdown in global demand will continue to weigh on exports for the foreseeable future, with the latest surveys of new export orders suggesting that real export growth fell close to zero in early 2019," he said.

Trade balances are determined by an assortment of factors, including foreign exchange rates, the strength of an economy, and how much a country borrows from abroad.

  • Michael Bolton appeared to be asleep during a live interview with Australia's edition of "The Morning Show."
  • He came to a few moments after it started, saying he couldn't hear anything.
  • A day later, he tweeted that a glitch was to blame. He wasn't sleeping he said, but tweeting.

Michael Bolton said a technical glitch was to blame after he appeared to fall asleep at the start of a live television interview Monday.

In a remote studio interview with the Australian version of "The Morning Show," the singer was unresponsive as it began. Bolton didn't move, and his eyes were closed.

"Michael, hi Michael. It'sKylie and Larry, we're with you live," one of the hosts called out.

Bolton slowly opened his eyes and said, "it's gone silent." Then he appeared to close his eyes again.

After a minute, where the studios apparently managed technical issues, the interview came together as planned.

Tuesday, on Twitter, Bolton said he wasn't sleeping — he was merely tweeting.

"I got my first record deal when I was 15 and I haven’t slept since!!"he wrote on Twitter. "In all seriousness there were technical issues with the live feed and they caught me tweeting! We had a great interview once they fixed the glitch."

Angela Ahrendts transformed Apple's stores. But will the changes stick? (AAPL)

Angela Ahrendts

  • Apple's head of retail, Angela Ahrendts, is leaving the company.
  • In her five-year tenure, she spearheaded major changes to Apple's retail division, including a store redesign and integration between online and physical sales.
  • But there were also several missteps, including crowded stores, and public opposition to new Apple locations.

At Apple, the head of retail is a major, public-focused position.

While Apple is a technology company, its stores — more than 500 across the world — are one of the main places where the company can speak directly to customers, fix their issues, and convince them to buy new Apple computers.

In fact, Apple's senior vice president of retail, Angela Ahrendts, is fond of calling Apple stores the company's "biggest product." Most of Apple's full-time employees work in its stores.

But now, Ahrendts is out. In an announcement on Tuesday, Apple said that Ahrendts would be leaving, and taking over for her would be Deirdre O'Brien, who used to run Apple's HR, and will add the retail division to her workload.

O'Brien has already started, according to an SEC filing. Ahrendts will leave Apple on April 15.

Read more: Apple's retail chief, Angela Ahrendts, is leaving

Although Ahrendts was a public face of Apple, appearing at launch events and giving interviews, many consumers and Apple retail employees will remember her five year tenure as a period of changes and challenges.

When she started, Apple stores were already a juggernaut. Apple stopped reporting sales per square foot a while ago, but a 2017 estimate from Emarketer said that Apple makes more than $5,000 per square foot — higher than any other retailer.

Ahrendts oversaw a major redesign of Apple's stores, starting with the name — not Apple Stores, but just Apple, like Burberry, the fashion house she used to lead.

Under her supervision, Apple stores moved away from lines and the Genius Bar, where customers could sit to get their products fixed, and moved to a new paradigm, where Apple employees roam the floor and can help or check out customers from their mobile devices.

She also integrated Apple's online store and its retail arm, such that so many people were able to pre-order and pickup iPhones on launch days that the famous line of fans became largely a phenomenon of the past.

"Ahrendts's signature accomplishment has been the unification of Apple's offline and online retail experiences; she also advanced the Today at Apple in-store experience," Loup Ventures founder Gene Munster wrote in an email.

Significant challenges

apple store

Apple employees liked that Ahrendts was communicative and were surprised about the announcement. She posted regular video addresses to retail employees, which could be viewed on Apple's employee portal. She also regularly communicated with retail teams about why certain programs or products were being changed or added, a current Apple technician told Business Insider, asking for anonymity because they are not allowed to speak publicly about their job. Retail employees were informed of the changes in an email sent shortly after Apple's public announcement.

But there were significant challenges under Ahrendts as well. Stores are often overcrowded, especially during important periods like the holiday season. Apple stores became the de-facto service center for iPhones purchased from anywhere, including from carriers and other retailers, straining limited resources. And the new system of hailing an Apple employee from anywhere on the show floor frustrated some people, who would've preferred lining up.

Apple's service problems got worse in the past year when the company was forced to offer new iPhone batteries for $29 after a scandal about software updates. Stores saw a major uptick in customers, causing crowding and unsatisfactory experiences. Daring Fireball's John Gruber said that Apple replaced 10 times the number of batteries it normally would, and several types of batteries were in short supply. Apple eventually had to bring in employees from other service-oriented parts of the business, as well as external contractors, to deal with the backlog, according to 9to5Mac

Ahrendts wasn't immune to gaffes, either. At one iPhone launch, she referred to Apple's stores as "town squares," framing them as places to gather, instead of just buying things. This rhetoric dovetailed nicely with Apple's expanded classes, which teach people how to use Apple products and software.

But it also highlighted that Apple wanted to buy or lease long-term flagship properties in major cities around the world and transform them into stores, and it was the key phrase that protesters latched onto when fighting these planned Apple expansions. Protesters have already turned resistance into Apple's stores into major controversies in Melbourne, Australia, and Stockholm, Sweden

Ahrendts also at times seemed uncomfortable leading a large division of retail employees. Before the Apple Watch launched, she said in an address to employees that "this is what you were born to do," annoying some retail employees who see their job as just one part of their lives.

Even Ahrendts herself seemed tired of a numbers-focused retail operation in a recent interview, and seemed to wist for a smaller-scale, fashion-oriented challenge. (Apple retail employees are closely tracked with something called a Net Promoter Score, and even though Apple doesn't provide many metrics for its stores to investors, they're closely watched internally.)

"The tragedy in retail is that it has become about numbers," Ahrendts told Vogue Business. "It's about cost-cutting the way to prosperity instead of investing in your people, and in that environment, big isn’t always good."

Apple has 70,000 retail employees out of its 132,000 total employees, and its median pay company-wide is $55,426, which provides a ballpark for what most retail employees make. Ahrendts was one of Apple's most highly paid executives — she made about $70 million in stock grants when she joined Apple, and between $20 and $30 million in total compensation most years.

What remains to be seen is how many of Ahrendts' changes will ultimately stick. As 9to5Mac's Michael Steeber, who follows Apple retail closely, tweeted: "It feels like Apple is evolving the intent of putting trees in its stores and deprecating the term 'Genius Grove.'"

But other changes, like the closer online-to-physical integration, will likely stay in place for a while under O'Brien. She's an Apple lifer, having worked at the company for 30 years, and given her background in operations — CEO Tim Cook's specialty — she's likely to keep many of the Ahrendts-era changes in place and keep the trains running on time.

Evan Spiegel Snap CEO Snapchat

  • Snap beat on both the top and bottom lines.
  • The company also said its daily active-user count stabilized in the period after two quarters of decline.
  • Snap shares under pressure over the past year as the company lost popularity following its redesign and had to deal with sustained pressure from Facebook and Instagram.
  • Watch Snap trade live.

Snap was up 21.7% early Wednesday to $8.57 a share after saying its biggest problem — a declining number of daily users — has finally stabilized.

The social-media company on Tuesday evening reported a better-than-feared loss for the fourth quarter. It said it lost $0.14 a share on revenue of $389.8 million, topping the $0.19 loss and $377.5 million that was expected.

Additionally, the company's Snapchat app had 186 million daily active users during the quarter, the same number as the previous quarter. This was the first time in three quarters that Snap's daily user count hadn't fallen.

Looking ahead, Snap sees first-quarter sales in the range of $285 million and $310 million. Analysts were hoping for revenue of $306.28 million.

Snap had tough time in 2018. On February 21, the social-media celebrity Kylie Jenner blasted the Snapchat app's redesign and said her days of using the app were overShares have since fallen 50% as the Snapchat app has lost popularity following its redesign while also dealing with sustained pressure from Facebook and Instagram. The combination of those difficulties has contributed to the app's declining user base.

In August, Snap said in its second-quarter earnings release that it had suffered its first ever decline in sequential daily active users. That trend continued in its third quarter, when the company said its number of daily active users fell by 1%.

Snap was up 47% so far this year.

This relatively unknown town in Florida has become a horse 'Disneyland' for the richest of the rich, including Bill Gates' and Steve Jobs' offspring

  • Wellington, Florida, is a small town that has become the horse capital of America.
  • Olympians and children of billionaires — including daughters of Steve Jobs and Bill Gates— show up every winter to compete for millions of dollars in prize money.
  • With Hermès fly bonnets, luxury stables, and diamond necklaces in the shape of horseshoes, Wellington is a fantasy land for the horse-obsessed.

To most of the country, the name "Wellington, Florida," doesn't mean anything.

However, to a certain elite group that ranges from Olympians to the children of Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, and Bruce Springsteen, the small town has become a magnet that draws thousands of people every winter.

The Wellington attraction is simple: It's the horse capital of the United States.

Every winter, the town hosts the Winter Equestrian Festival, which takes place from January to April. Over the course of almost four months, the best horseback riders in the country compete for $9 million in prize money.

However, horses' domination of Wellington continues outside of the show ring. From "horse crossing" signs to $8,000 Hermès saddles, horses reign supreme in the small town.

While I personally know very little about horses, I have visited Wellington in the past with a friend who competes at the WEF. In 2018, while visiting what one rider called "Disneyland for horse lovers," I decided to document the over-the-top experience:

Wellington is located in southern Florida, roughly half an hour's drive away from West Palm Beach.

While some equestrians have houses or apartments in the neighboring towns, Wellington is a village of its own. In fact, you could easily live a life of luxury without leaving the 100-acre equestrian show complex.

Thousands of people flock to Wellington every winter for the Winter Equestrian Festival, or WEF. According to organizers, more than 3,000 horses compete every year, with the equines' combined net worth adding up to more than $500 million.

Snap is the 'comeback kid.' Here's what Wall Street is saying about its latest results. (SNAP)

  • Snap, Snapchat's parent company, exceeded Wall Street's expectations on Tuesday.
  • The social media company reported a smaller quarterly loss than was forecasted, and revenue also topped expectations.
  • Shares soared more than 20% the results.
  • Investment firms were mostly upbeat on the results. Snap pre-announced last month that guidance would come in"slightly favorable to the top end" of the company's previous forecast.
  • Watch Snap trade live.

Wall Street was quick to heap praise onto Snapchat's parent company, Snap, after the social-media platform reported fourth-quarter results that exceeded expectations. The report led analysts on Wednesday to wonder whether the troubled stock had reached an inflection point, though many cautioned any kind of turnaround was in its early stages.

Snap's quarterly loss on Tuesday came in smaller than was expected, and its sales also topped consensus expectations, sending the stock soaring more than 22% early Wednesday to $8.65 a share. Analysts were also encouraged by the Snapchat app's daily active user count — a key measure of the app's health — stabilizing in the fourth-quarter after two quarters of declines

The company had already announced in a filing last month— when it also said its CFO would leave the company— that its revenue and adjusted EBITDA numbers would come in "slightly favorable to the top end" of its prior guidance.

The results drew at least six analysts tracking the stock to raise their price targets, though all were well below the company's initial public offering price of $17 a share. The average price target on Snap is now $8.35, according to analysts surveyed by Bloomberg.

Still, while analysts lifted their price targets far and wide, less common were changes in their investment recommendations. Analysts like Mark Mahaney at RBC Capital Markets and Doug Anmuth at JP Morgan, who both bumped up their price targets, maintained their "sector perform" and "underweight" ratings, respectively.

"Though these were encouraging results, one quarter doesn't make a trend and we remain Underweight as we look for further signs of improvement in the business," Anmuth told clients on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, a more cautious analyst, SunTrust's Youssef Squali, maintained both his $8 price target and "hold" rating. Squali said the quarterly results pointed to "sustained advertiser demand, stabilization in user growth and better cost containment."

He added: "That said, lack of visibility into DAU growth re-acceleration (likely post the full Android app re-launch), timing of break-even and valuation keep us on the sidelines."

Here's a summary of what other Wall Street analysts are telling their clients about Snap's latest report:

Jefferies: 'Encouraging Steps by the Comeback Kid'

Rating: Hold

Price target: $9 (from $7)

"We remain on the sidelines, but are incrementally more positive with underlying growth in iOS users and a niche audience that is increasingly difficult to reach in a digital age," analyst Brent Thill told clients Wednesday.

He added that 2018 was the "year of exodus from both employees and users on the platform, but we believe that Snap is turning the corner in '19 and that will help investor sentiment improve throughout the year. We also would like to see Snap lay out some simple framework on its 3-5 year planning and help to simplify the narrative around the story."

RBC Capital Markets: 'An Inflection Point?'

Rating: Sector Perform

Price target: $10 (from $8)

"Things clearly getting less worse, but are they getting better?" Mark Mahaney wrote in a note on Monday.

He said he was maintaining his rating on the stock, rather than upgrading it, due to "valuation and uncertainty."

"SNAP noted that it is cautiously optimistic and does not foresee a Q/ Q decline in DAUs in Q1. Still, we are reserving judgement on the early, limited release of the improved Android app, with mngmt saying early tests showing promise," he wrote, referring to daily active users.

JP Morgan: 'A Better Quarter w/ Users Stable & Progress on Negative EBITDA & FCF'

Rating: Underweight

Price target: $7 (from $6)

"Though these were encouraging results, one quarter doesn’t make a trend and we remain Underweight as we look for further signs of improvement in the business," analyst Doug Anmuth said. "We continue to believe growing DAUs will be challenging and the competitive landscape for both user time and advertiser dollars remains intense."

He added: "We believe there is better risk/reward in other names, including FB& TWTR, which are two of our top picks."

The US Navy just turned the future guns of its new Ford-class supercarriers on a drone in a landmark live-fire test

USS Gerald R. Ford

  • Raytheon and the US Navy tested an integrated combat system for the aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford for the first time recently.
  • During the test, the Ship Self Defense System detected and tracked a drone. It then eliminated the target drone with an Evolved Sea Sparrow Missile.
  • The test was a big step forward for the new class of aircraft carriers, which have faced a number of development setbacks.

The US Navy, together with Raytheon, recently put the combat system developed to defend the new Ford-class supercarriers to the test against an unmanned aerial vehicle off the coast of California, Raytheon announced Tuesday.

The target drone was eliminated by Raytheon's Ship Self Defense System (SSDS) Integrated Combat System, a collection of advanced sensors and missiles. The system detected and tracked the target and then fired an Evolved Sea Sparrow Missile (ESSM), taking out the simulated threat.

The integrated combat system had Rolling Airframe Missile ready as well, but it was unnecessary since the ESSM was able to get the job done.

The self-defense system, which is designed to protect Navy carriers and amphibious assault ships by tracking and intercepting incoming threats, was tested on a test vessel, not the USS Gerald R. Ford. Nonetheless, the test appears to be a step forward for the embattled $13 billion supercarriers.

"The design of our Ship Self Defense System enabled seamless integration of the sensors and missiles with the CVN 78  combat system during this first-of-its-kind test, proving the ability of the system to defend our sailors," Mike Fabel, Raytheon's SSDS program manager, said in a statement.

"This integrated combat system success brings Ford [herself] one step closer to operational testing and deployment."

The USS Gerald R. Ford, the first of the Navy's new class of carriers, has faced criticism as it continues to encounter expensive problems, from the ship's electromagnetic catapults to the weapons elevators, which the Navy secretary staked his job on fixing

More testing of the weapon system is scheduled to be carried out this year, and the Ford is expected to be deployed in 2022.

Sinemia has signed up 10 movie-theater chains for custom subscription programs, as its war with MoviePass moves into the enterprise phase

Sinemia_app2 Sinemia

  • Movie-ticket subscription company Sinemia, a competitor to MoviePass, gave an update on its venture that lets movie theaters craft their own subscription services using Sinemia's tech, called Sinemia Enterprise.
  • The company told Business Insider that currently more than 10 theater chains use Sinemia Enterprise, including Studio Movie Grill and National Amusements.
  • Sinemia CEO Rifat Oguz said the reaction has been so positive worldwide that he's launched teams in Europe, South America, Africa, and Asia to support the demand.

The movie-ticket subscription war has shifted from trying to attract theatergoers to trying to attract exhibitors — and currently Sinemia has an advantage.

In October 2018, movie-ticket subscription company Sinemia announced it would begin to offer its tech to movie theaters so they could craft their own personalized subscription plans through its software platform, Sinemia Enterprise. And that endeavor seems to be bearing fruit.

The company revealed to Business Insider that Sinemia Enterprise is now being used by more than 10 theater chains.

Through Sinemia Enterprise, a theater can customize its own subscription plan within two weeks, offering any ticket or pricing plan by using Sinemia's tech, which is plugged directly into the theater’s point-of-sale system. It can be used through iOS and Android apps, and can support any kind of plan (including couples or family) or showing (standard 2D, 3D, IMAX, or 4DX). And the individual theater operates through its own personalized dashboard.

“Once we launched Sinemia Enterprise we had demand coming from all over the world,” Sinemia founder and CEO Rifat Oguz told Business Insider. “We are getting calls about it every day.”

Oguz said theater chains Studio Movie Grill and National Amusements had used Sinemia Enterprise to launch subscription programs. But Oguz told Business Insider that Sinemia Enterprise is also global. The venture has grown so quickly that he’s formed teams in Europe, South America, Africa, and Asia to support the demand, he said.

“It’s a new world for them,” Oguz said of movie theaters who now have subscription services thanks to Sinemia Enterprise. “If you try to build one on your own now you will be playing catch up.”

That’s a big reason why Studio Movie Grill signed up.

Studio Movie Grill Peter Larsen Getty

The chain, which is known for its in-theater dining experience, launched SMG Access Subscription in the beginning of the year through Sinemia Enterprise because it wanted to get its own program to market as soon as possible.

“It was on our roadmap for a couple of years to lean into our own version of subscription,” Studio Movie Grill senior director of marketing Brandon Jones told Business Insider.

Jones said when he and his team met Sinemia in October, it became apparent that their plans could be fast-tracked.

“We had an opportunity to have subscription in the marketplace that was SMG branded in a short period of time and I didn’t want to be sitting in our office six months from now and not have a subscription program,” Jones said.

SMG Access Subscription has been slowly rolling out as an invite-only offer. Offers range from $18.99 to see four movies per month any day of the week, to $14.99 per month to see four movies between Monday and Thursday.

Read more: Netflix's new hit show "Russian Doll" started with a phone call from Amy Poehler 7 years ago

Oguz said the biggest takeaway so far has been that every chain has different needs. Some are starting from the ground floor and are looking for Sinemia to provide everything to launch its own platform, while others have an existing subscription plan but want to use Sinemia Enterprise strictly for a specific need, like fraud detection.

“We are constantly changing the platform for the needs of the movie theaters,” Oguz said.

Oguz said all the deals it has in place with theaters are multi-year and it will be making money from either end-to-end software platform fees based on a chain’s monthly subscription volume or theaters paying for specific modules, like fraud control, business intelligence, or marketing.

And Sinemia is no longer the only game in town. Last month, MoviePass announced that it would also begin to sell its tech to theaters. But Oguz said he and his team had not crossed paths with their rival when talking to theaters.

Regardless, Jones does credit MoviePass for the subscription craze that’s hit the movie-theater business.

“They developed a marketplace,” he said. “Subscription in movie theaters is here to stay, so we want to make sure we are offering it to our guests.”

The move to work better with exhibitors comes at a time when theatergoers have voiced their displeasure with how the companies have treated them. Both Sinemia and MoviePass have been hit with lawsuits alleging they are engaged in "bait and switch" schemes after changing pricing plans and adding fees to try and better their margins. Starting a business-to-business service is a way to control costs without angering subscribers.

Hodinkee's latest collaboration with a major watchmaker could be its most appealing

Hodinkee IWC EMBARGOED

  • After creating limited-edition watches with Omega, Zenith, and TAG Heuer, among others, Hodinkee has partnered with IWC Schaffhausen.
  • Hodinkee and IWC have updated a classic pilot's watch.
  • The piece will be produced in 500 examples and sell for $6,400.

Over the past few years, Hodinkee has racked up some impressive limited-edition collaborations with major watchmakers.

My personal favorites have been two affordable watches with Swatch, but the website and e-commerce outfit has also worked with names such as Zenith, Omega, Laurent Ferrier, and TAG Heuer. The most recent partnership was with French luxury brand Hermès, and it was extremely cool (I finally got to check out the watch in person, and I was blown away by its class and beauty).

But Hodinkee, based in New York and founded by vintage-watch authority Ben Clymer a decade ago, isn't slowing down. And its latest collaboration could be one of its most accessible.

Read more:Hodinkee's latest limited-edition watch collaboration with Hermès could be its boldest yet

It's the Pilot’s Watch Edition Mark XVIII Edition "Hodinkee," from the company and IWC Schaffhausen, a Swiss legend that was started by an American and that can trace its legacy back to the 19th century. International Watch Company is well-known for its pilot's watches — the Big Pilot was the piece to own for a while — but its Portugieser, Portofino and Ingenieur are also coveted.

A legendary pilot's watch

Hodinkee IWC EMBARGOED

The brand's entry-level watch is currently the Mark XVIII, and it retails for a pretty reasonable $4,150 in stainless steel on a leather strap. For many collectors, it's their first "good" watch and a taste of IWC's core DNA: tool watches designed to work in aircraft cockpits. And of course, the name "Mark XVIII" implies some history — and fewer roman numerals.

The Hodinkee limited-edition "dates back to the clean lines and restrained design of the ultimate post-war pilot’s watch — the Mark 11 from 1948," the company said in a statement. "Enthusiasts and collectors alike love the Mark 11 for its purity and tough-as-nails demeanor."

The new watch will be produced in 500 examples, priced at $6,400 and sold through Hodinkee's online shop and IWC. The design is a nod to the past in several ways, but the piece has also been updated for 21st-century enthusiasts. The 39-millimeter case is made from ceratanium, a sort of ceramic-titanium combo that's both light and strong. According to Hodinkee, the black case recalls the "reference 3705 Fliegerchronograph" from 1994, which had a black ceramic case.

A new look, with new materials

Hodinkee IWC EMBARGOED

That's a cool watch, and the Mark XVIII Hodinkee evokes it while offering a new look: a black no-date face, a textured dark-green calfskin strap, and an automatic IWC 35100 movement with a 42-hour power reserve driving the three-hand timekeeping. The vibe is casual and military-inspired, but the Mark XVIII Hodinkee could be dressed up just short of accompanying a suit and tie.

The timepiece went on sale today, and each example is numbered, delivered in a presentation box, and has a subtle IWC/Hodinkee engraving on the caseback.

In a world where anybody intrigued by luxury watches runs into Rolex, Cartier, Omega, and perhaps Patek Philippe, the Richemont-owned IWC has the status of a special club. It isn't fair to beat up on Rolex, because the company produces remarkable watches that are worth the sometimes elevated prices. But IWC has always been something of a thinking person's alternative, a more purposeful Jaeger-LeCoultre (also a Richemont brand). Fans will be thrilled by the Hodinkee collaboration.

Precious metals are crucial for the future of automotive manufacturing

$

TANAKApost3

The automotive industry is at a once-in-a-century turning point. New developments are reported daily in fields such as autonomous driving, electric vehicles (EVs), and fuel cell vehicles (FCVs). The International Energy Agency forecasts that although demand for automobiles that use electric power will grow rapidly over the next three decades to 2050, hybrids and plug-in hybrids will account for most of that demand. Vehicles with internal combustion engines look set to remain part of everyday life for decades to come.

In auto manufacturing, precious metals have long been important for guaranteeing the environmental performance and reliability of components like catalytic converters and engine sensors. As vehicles grow more high-tech, precious metals will become more important too.

How will the relationship between auto manufacturing and precious metals change in the future? We asked two key people at TANAKA Precious Metals (TANAKA) to share their deep knowledge of the market for precious metals to be used in automobiles.

Tanaka3men

Fact: More than half the world’s platinum mine output is consumed by automobile manufacturing

One reason precious metals are so important to automobile manufacturing is the essential role they play in three-way catalytic converters, which purify exhaust gas. Emissions regulations are far stricter than in the 20th century, creating skyrocketing demand for the precious metals used in three-way catalytic converters.

”More than half the world’s platinum mine output is used in catalytic converters for automobiles,” says Sakairi. “An even larger proportion of palladium and rhodium is used. Unless the world recycles at least as much as it mines — and preferably more — meeting that demand will be impossible.”

At the same time, the role of precious metals in guaranteeing automobile reliability of automobiles will continue to expand. Cars are complicated and expensive products, and precious metals are key to their internal infrastructure.

TANAKA car image english

Power semiconductors and sensors: Key technologies for the electric age, both dependent on precious metals

As automobile technology advances, uses are found for precious metals in new fields, such as power semiconductors for converting electrical energy, sensors for autonomous driving, and fuel cells for providing power.

“Power conductors (for electric power control) are an indispensable component for automobiles that use electric power,” explains Shindo. “In the past, they were made of silicon, but if silicon carbide could be used instead, you would see dramatic improvements allowing smaller devices and lighter cars, which in turn would increase driving range.”

Power semiconductors must be able to withstand extremely severe operating environments, cycling from -50°C to 250-300°C. Research is currently in progress on precious metal materials expected to meet these requirements.

Meanwhile, hydrogen fuel cells use platinum as an electrode catalyst, and TANAKA has a leading share of this market worldwide. Applications of FCVs for public transport are attracting attention around the world, including an FC-powered bus that serves Japan’s Tokyo Station. Because the only exhaust material from a fuel cell is water, FC-powered forklifts are also being adopted by enclosed warehouse spaces.

Recycling to meet 35% of demand for precious metals in automobile catalytic converters

TANAKA emphasizes sustainability in its provision of precious metals, and the key to achieving this is the precious metal cycle. “It’s a mistake to think that, just because precious metals are put to more uses now, we should be digging up twice as much of them,” says Sakairi.

Mining is not the only way to obtain precious metals. In particular, they can be recycled from automobile and other scraps — so-called “urban mining.” Through the group company NIPPON PGM, TANAKA has turned the recycling of precious metals from scrap into a business. For example, around 37 tons of platinum can be recycled from scrap every year. This is a very large amount, covering to roughly 35% of annual demand for use in automobile catalytic converters.

If precious metal suppliers do not forecast and take steps to meet the future requirements of the automotive industry, supply may become insufficient to meet demand. Gathering that kind of information is possible only with long-standing relationships with the industry and a deep commitment to academia, where research on future materials takes place.

TANAKA will continue striving worldwide to support the automotive industry from behind the scenes.

Below is the full text of President Donald Trump's second State of the Union address to Congress, as prepared for delivery.

"Madam Speaker, Mr. Vice President, Members of Congress, the First Lady of the United States, and my fellow Americans:

We meet tonight at a moment of unlimited potential. As we begin a new Congress, I stand here ready to work with you to achieve historic breakthroughs for all Americans.

Millions of our fellow citizens are watching us now, gathered in this great chamber, hoping that we will govern not as two parties but as one Nation.

The agenda I will lay out this evening is not a Republican agenda or a Democrat agenda. It is the agenda of the American people.

Many of us campaigned on the same core promises: to defend American jobs and demand fair trade for American workers; to rebuild and revitalize our Nation's infrastructure; to reduce the price of healthcare and prescription drugs; to create an immigration system that is safe, lawful, modern and secure; and to pursue a foreign policy that puts America's interests first.

There is a new opportunity in American politics, if only we have the courage to seize it. Victory is not winning for our party. Victory is winning for our country.

This year, America will recognize two important anniversaries that show us the majesty of America's mission, and the power of American pride.

Pelosi Trump state of the union

In June, we mark 75 years since the start of what General Dwight D. Eisenhower called the Great Crusade — the Allied liberation of Europe in World War II. On D-Day, June 6, 1944, 15,000 young American men jumped from the sky, and 60,000 more stormed in from the sea, to save our civilization from tyranny. Here with us tonight are three of those heroes: Private First Class Joseph Reilly, Staff Sergeant Irving Locker, and Sergeant Herman Zeitchik. Gentlemen, we salute you.

In 2019, we also celebrate 50 years since brave young pilots flew a quarter of a million miles through space to plant the American flag on the face of the moon. Half a century later, we are joined by one of the Apollo 11 astronauts who planted that flag: Buzz Aldrin. This year, American astronauts will go back to space on American rockets.

In the 20th century, America saved freedom, transformed science, and redefined the middle class standard of living for the entire world to see. Now, we must step boldly and bravely into the next chapter of this great American adventure, and we must create a new standard of living for the 21st century. An amazing quality of life for all of our citizens is within our reach.

We can make our communities safer, our families stronger, our culture richer, our faith deeper, and our middle class bigger and more prosperous than ever before.

But we must reject the politics of revenge, resistance, and retribution — and embrace the boundless potential of cooperation, compromise, and the common good.

Together, we can break decades of political stalemate. We can bridge old divisions, heal old wounds, build new coalitions, forge new solutions, and unlock the extraordinary promise of America's future. The decision is ours to make.

We must choose between greatness or gridlock, results or resistance, vision or vengeance, incredible progress or pointless destruction.

Tonight, I ask you to choose greatness.

Over the last 2 years, my Administration has moved with urgency and historic speed to confront problems neglected by leaders of both parties over many decades.

In just over 2 years since the election, we have launched an unprecedented economic boom — a boom that has rarely been seen before. We have created 5.3 million new jobs and importantly added 600,000 new manufacturing jobs — something which almost everyone said was impossible to do, but the fact is, we are just getting started.

Wages are rising at the fastest pace in decades, and growing for blue collar workers, who I promised to fight for, faster than anyone else. Nearly 5 million Americans have been lifted off food stamps. The United States economy is growing almost twice as fast today as when I took office, and we are considered far and away the hottest economy anywhere in the world. Unemployment has reached the lowest rate in half a century. African-American, Hispanic-American and Asian-American unemployment have all reached their lowest levels ever recorded. Unemployment for Americans with disabilities has also reached an all-time low. More people are working now than at any time in our history –- 157 million.

We passed a massive tax cut for working families and doubled the child tax credit.

We virtually ended the estate, or death, tax on small businesses, ranches, and family farms.

We eliminated the very unpopular Obamacare individual mandate penalty — and to give critically ill patients access to life-saving cures, we passed right to try.

My Administration has cut more regulations in a short time than any other administration during its entire tenure. Companies are coming back to our country in large numbers thanks to historic reductions in taxes and regulations.

We have unleashed a revolution in American energy — the United States is now the number one producer of oil and natural gas in the world. And now, for the first time in 65 years, we are a net exporter of energy.

After 24 months of rapid progress, our economy is the envy of the world, our military is the most powerful on earth, and America is winning each and every day. Members of Congress: the State of our Union is strong. Our country is vibrant and our economy is thriving like never before.

On Friday, it was announced that we added another 304,000 jobs last month alone — almost double what was expected. An economic miracle is taking place in the United States — and the only thing that can stop it are foolish wars, politics, or ridiculous partisan investigations.

If there is going to be peace and legislation, there cannot be war and investigation. It just doesn't work that way!

We must be united at home to defeat our adversaries abroad.

This new era of cooperation can start with finally confirming the more than 300 highly qualified nominees who are still stuck in the Senate – some after years of waiting. The Senate has failed to act on these nominations, which is unfair to the nominees and to our country.

Now is the time for bipartisan action. Believe it or not, we have already proven that it is possible.

In the last Congress, both parties came together to pass unprecedented legislation to confront the opioid crisis, a sweeping new Farm Bill, historic VA reforms, and after four decades of rejection, we passed VA Accountability so we can finally terminate those who mistreat our wonderful veterans.

And just weeks ago, both parties united for groundbreaking criminal justice reform. Last year, I heard through friends the story of Alice Johnson. I was deeply moved. In 1997, Alice was sentenced to life in prison as a first-time non-violent drug offender. Over the next two decades, she became a prison minister, inspiring others to choose a better path. She had a big impact on that prison population — and far beyond.

Alice's story underscores the disparities and unfairness that can exist in criminal sentencing — and the need to remedy this injustice. She served almost 22 years and had expected to be in prison for the rest of her life.

In June, I commuted Alice's sentence — and she is here with us tonight. Alice, thank you for reminding us that we always have the power to shape our own destiny.

When I saw Alice's beautiful family greet her at the prison gates, hugging and kissing and crying and laughing, I knew I did the right thing.

Inspired by stories like Alice's, my Administration worked closely with members of both parties to sign the First Step Act into law. This legislation reformed sentencing laws that have wrongly and disproportionately harmed the African-American community. The First Step Act gives non-violent offenders the chance to re-enter society as productive, law-abiding citizens. Now, States across the country are following our lead. America is a Nation that believes in redemption.

We are also joined tonight by Matthew Charles from Tennessee. In 1996, at age 30, Matthew was sentenced to 35 years for selling drugs and related offenses. Over the next two decades, he completed more than 30 Bible studies, became a law clerk, and mentored fellow inmates. Now, Matthew is the very first person to be released from prison under the First Step Act. Matthew, on behalf of all Americans: welcome home.

As we have seen, when we are united, we can make astonishing strides for our country. Now, Republicans and Democrats must join forces again to confront an urgent national crisis.

The Congress has 10 days left to pass a bill that will fund our Government, protect our homeland, and secure our southern border.

Now is the time for the Congress to show the world that America is committed to ending illegal immigration and putting the ruthless coyotes, cartels, drug dealers, and human traffickers out of business.

As we speak, large, organized caravans are on the march to the United States. We have just heard that Mexican cities, in order to remove the illegal immigrants from their communities, are getting trucks and buses to bring them up to our country in areas where there is little border protection. I have ordered another 3,750 troops to our southern border to prepare for the tremendous onslaught.

This is a moral issue. The lawless state of our southern border is a threat to the safety, security, and financial well‑being of all Americans. We have a moral duty to create an immigration system that protects the lives and jobs of our citizens. This includes our obligation to the millions of immigrants living here today, who followed the rules and respected our laws. Legal immigrants enrich our Nation and strengthen our society in countless ways. I want people to come into our country, but they have to come in legally.

Tonight, I am asking you to defend our very dangerous southern border out of love and devotion to our fellow citizens and to our country.

No issue better illustrates the divide between America's working class and America's political class than illegal immigration. Wealthy politicians and donors push for open borders while living their lives behind walls and gates and guards.

Meanwhile, working class Americans are left to pay the price for mass illegal migration — reduced jobs, lower wages, overburdened schools and hospitals, increased crime, and a depleted social safety net.

Tolerance for illegal immigration is not compassionate — it is cruel. One in three women is sexually assaulted on the long journey north. Smugglers use migrant children as human pawns to exploit our laws and gain access to our country.

Human traffickers and sex traffickers take advantage of the wide open areas between our ports of entry to smuggle thousands of young girls and women into the United States and to sell them into prostitution and modern-day slavery.

Tens of thousands of innocent Americans are killed by lethal drugs that cross our border and flood into our cities — including meth, heroin, cocaine, and fentanyl.

The savage gang, MS-13, now operates in 20 different American States, and they almost all come through our southern border. Just yesterday, an MS-13 gang member was taken into custody for a fatal shooting on a subway platform in New York City. We are removing these gang members by the thousands, but until we secure our border they're going to keep streaming back in.

Year after year, countless Americans are murdered by criminal illegal aliens.

I've gotten to know many wonderful Angel Moms, Dads, and families – no one should ever have to suffer the horrible heartache they have endured.

Here tonight is Debra Bissell. Just three weeks ago, Debra's parents, Gerald and Sharon, were burglarized and shot to death in their Reno, Nevada, home by an illegal alien. They were in their eighties and are survived by four children, 11 grandchildren, and 20 great-grandchildren. Also here tonight are Gerald and Sharon's granddaughter, Heather, and great‑granddaughter, Madison.

To Debra, Heather, Madison, please stand: few can understand your pain. But I will never forget, and I will fight for the memory of Gerald and Sharon, that it should never happen again.

Not one more American life should be lost because our Nation failed to control its very dangerous border.

In the last 2 years, our brave ICE officers made 266,000 arrests of criminal aliens, including those charged or convicted of nearly 100,000 assaults, 30,000 sex crimes, and 4,000 killings.

We are joined tonight by one of those law enforcement heroes: ICE Special Agent Elvin Hernandez. When Elvin was a boy, he and his family legally immigrated to the United States from the Dominican Republic. At the age of eight, Elvin told his dad he wanted to become a Special Agent. Today, he leads investigations into the scourge of international sex trafficking. Elvin says: "If I can make sure these young girls get their justice, I've done my job." Thanks to his work and that of his colleagues, more than 300 women and girls have been rescued from horror and more than 1,500 sadistic traffickers have been put behind bars in the last year.

Special Agent Hernandez, please stand: We will always support the brave men and women of Law Enforcement — and I pledge to you tonight that we will never abolish our heroes from ICE.

My Administration has sent to the Congress a commonsense proposal to end the crisis on our southern border.

It includes humanitarian assistance, more law enforcement, drug detection at our ports, closing loopholes that enable child smuggling, and plans for a new physical barrier, or wall, to secure the vast areas between our ports of entry. In the past, most of the people in this room voted for a wall — but the proper wall never got built. I'll get it built.

This is a smart, strategic, see-through steel barrier — not just a simple concrete wall. It will be deployed in the areas identified by border agents as having the greatest need, and as these agents will tell you, where walls go up, illegal crossings go way down.

San Diego used to have the most illegal border crossings in the country. In response, and at the request of San Diego residents and political leaders, a strong security wall was put in place. This powerful barrier almost completely ended illegal crossings.

The border city of El Paso, Texas, used to have extremely high rates of violent crime — one of the highest in the country, and considered one of our Nation's most dangerous cities. Now, with a powerful barrier in place, El Paso is one of our safest cities.

Simply put, walls work and walls save lives. So let's work together, compromise, and reach a deal that will truly make America safe.

As we work to defend our people's safety, we must also ensure our economic resurgence continues at a rapid pace.

No one has benefitted more from our thriving economy than women, who have filled 58 percent of the new jobs created in the last year. All Americans can be proud that we have more women in the workforce than ever before — and exactly one century after the Congress passed the Constitutional amendment giving women the right to vote, we also have more women serving in the Congress than ever before.

Democratic female congress members state of the union cheer wear white

As part of our commitment to improving opportunity for women everywhere, this Thursday we are launching the first ever Government-wide initiative focused on economic empowerment for women in developing countries.

To build on our incredible economic success, one priority is paramount — reversing decades of calamitous trade policies.

We are now making it clear to China that after years of targeting our industries, and stealing our intellectual property, the theft of American jobs and wealth has come to an end.

Therefore, we recently imposed tariffs on $250 billion of Chinese goods — and now our Treasury is receiving billions of dollars a month from a country that never gave us a dime. But I don't blame China for taking advantage of us — I blame our leaders and representatives for allowing this travesty to happen. I have great respect for President Xi, and we are now working on a new trade deal with China. But it must include real, structural change to end unfair trade practices, reduce our chronic trade deficit, and protect American jobs.

Another historic trade blunder was the catastrophe known as NAFTA.

I have met the men and women of Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Indiana, New Hampshire, and many other States whose dreams were shattered by NAFTA. For years, politicians promised them they would negotiate for a better deal. But no one ever tried — until now.

Our new U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement — or USMCA — will replace NAFTA and deliver for American workers: bringing back our manufacturing jobs, expanding American agriculture, protecting intellectual property, and ensuring that more cars are proudly stamped with four beautiful words: made in the USA.

Tonight, I am also asking you to pass the United States Reciprocal Trade Act, so that if another country places an unfair tariff on an American product, we can charge them the exact same tariff on the same product that they sell to us.

Both parties should be able to unite for a great rebuilding of America's crumbling infrastructure.

I know that the Congress is eager to pass an infrastructure bill — and I am eager to work with you on legislation to deliver new and important infrastructure investment, including investments in the cutting edge industries of the future. This is not an option. This is a necessity.

The next major priority for me, and for all of us, should be to lower the cost of healthcare and prescription drugs — and to protect patients with pre-existing conditions.

Already, as a result of my Administration's efforts, in 2018 drug prices experienced their single largest decline in 46 years.

But we must do more. It is unacceptable that Americans pay vastly more than people in other countries for the exact same drugs, often made in the exact same place. This is wrong, unfair, and together we can stop it.

I am asking the Congress to pass legislation that finally takes on the problem of global freeloading and delivers fairness and price transparency for American patients. We should also require drug companies, insurance companies, and hospitals to disclose real prices to foster competition and bring costs down.

No force in history has done more to advance the human condition than American freedom. In recent years we have made remarkable progress in the fight against HIV and AIDS. Scientific breakthroughs have brought a once-distant dream within reach. My budget will ask Democrats and Republicans to make the needed commitment to eliminate the HIV epidemic in the United States within 10 years. Together, we will defeat AIDS in America.

Tonight, I am also asking you to join me in another fight that all Americans can get behind: the fight against childhood cancer.

Joining Melania in the gallery this evening is a very brave 10-year-old girl, Grace Eline. Every birthday since she was 4, Grace asked her friends to donate to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. She did not know that one day she might be a patient herself. Last year, Grace was diagnosed with brain cancer. Immediately, she began radiation treatment. At the same time, she rallied her community and raised more than $40,000 for the fight against cancer. When Grace completed treatment last fall, her doctors and nurses cheered with tears in their eyes as she hung up a poster that read: "Last Day of Chemo." Grace — you are an inspiration to us all.

Many childhood cancers have not seen new therapies in decades. My budget will ask the Congress for $500 million over the next 10 years to fund this critical life-saving research.

To help support working parents, the time has come to pass school choice for America's children. I am also proud to be the first President to include in my budget a plan for nationwide paid family leave — so that every new parent has the chance to bond with their newborn child.

There could be no greater contrast to the beautiful image of a mother holding her infant child than the chilling displays our Nation saw in recent days. Lawmakers in New York cheered with delight upon the passage of legislation that would allow a baby to be ripped from the mother's womb moments before birth. These are living, feeling, beautiful babies who will never get the chance to share their love and dreams with the world. And then, we had the case of the Governor of Virginia where he basically stated he would execute a baby after birth.

To defend the dignity of every person, I am asking the Congress to pass legislation to prohibit the late-term abortion of children who can feel pain in the mother's womb.

Let us work together to build a culture that cherishes innocent life. And let us reaffirm a fundamental truth: all children — born and unborn — are made in the holy image of God.

The final part of my agenda is to protect America's National Security.

Over the last 2 years, we have begun to fully rebuild the United States Military — with $700 billion last year and $716 billion this year. We are also getting other nations to pay their fair share. For years, the United States was being treated very unfairly by NATO — but now we have secured a $100 billion increase in defense spending from NATO allies.

As part of our military build-up, the United States is developing a state-of-the-art Missile Defense System.

Under my Administration, we will never apologize for advancing America's interests.

For example, decades ago the United States entered into a treaty with Russia in which we agreed to limit and reduce our missile capabilities. While we followed the agreement to the letter, Russia repeatedly violated its terms. That is why I announced that the United States is officially withdrawing from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty, or INF Treaty.

Perhaps we can negotiate a different agreement, adding China and others, or perhaps we can't –- in which case, we will outspend and out-innovate all others by far.

As part of a bold new diplomacy, we continue our historic push for peace on the Korean Peninsula. Our hostages have come home, nuclear testing has stopped, and there has not been a missile launch in 15 months. If I had not been elected President of the United States, we would right now, in my opinion, be in a major war with North Korea with potentially millions of people killed. Much work remains to be done, but my relationship with Kim Jong Un is a good one. And Chairman Kim and I will meet again on February 27 and 28 in Vietnam.

Two weeks ago, the United States officially recognized the legitimate government of Venezuela, and its new interim President, Juan Guaido.

We stand with the Venezuelan people in their noble quest for freedom — and we condemn the brutality of the Maduro regime, whose socialist policies have turned that nation from being the wealthiest in South America into a state of abject poverty and despair.

Here, in the United States, we are alarmed by new calls to adopt socialism in our country. America was founded on liberty and independence –- not government coercion, domination, and control. We are born free, and we will stay free. Tonight, we renew our resolve that America will never be a socialist country.

One of the most complex set of challenges we face is in the Middle East.

Our approach is based on principled realism — not discredited theories that have failed for decades to yield progress. For this reason, my Administration recognized the true capital of Israel — and proudly opened the American Embassy in Jerusalem.

Our brave troops have now been fighting in the Middle East for almost 19 years. In Afghanistan and Iraq, nearly 7,000 American heroes have given their lives. More than 52,000 Americans have been badly wounded. We have spent more than $7 trillion in the Middle East.

As a candidate for President, I pledged a new approach. Great nations do not fight endless wars.

When I took office, ISIS controlled more than 20,000 square miles in Iraq and Syria. Today, we have liberated virtually all of that territory from the grip of these bloodthirsty killers.

Now, as we work with our allies to destroy the remnants of ISIS, it is time to give our brave warriors in Syria a warm welcome home.

I have also accelerated our negotiations to reach a political settlement in Afghanistan. Our troops have fought with unmatched valor — and thanks to their bravery, we are now able to pursue a political solution to this long and bloody conflict.

In Afghanistan, my Administration is holding constructive talks with a number of Afghan groups, including the Taliban. As we make progress in these negotiations, we will be able to reduce our troop presence and focus on counter-terrorism. We do not know whether we will achieve an agreement — but we do know that after two decades of war, the hour has come to at least try for peace.

Above all, friend and foe alike must never doubt this Nation's power and will to defend our people. Eighteen years ago, terrorists attacked the USS Cole — and last month American forces killed one of the leaders of the attack.

We are honored to be joined tonight by Tom Wibberley, whose son, Navy Seaman Craig Wibberley, was one of the 17 sailors we tragically lost. Tom: we vow to always remember the heroes of the USS Cole.

My Administration has acted decisively to confront the world's leading state sponsor of terror: the radical regime in Iran.

To ensure this corrupt dictatorship never acquires nuclear weapons, I withdrew the United States from the disastrous Iran nuclear deal. And last fall, we put in place the toughest sanctions ever imposed on a country.

We will not avert our eyes from a regime that chants death to America and threatens genocide against the Jewish people. We must never ignore the vile poison of anti-Semitism, or those who spread its venomous creed. With one voice, we must confront this hatred anywhere and everywhere it occurs.

Just months ago, 11 Jewish-Americans were viciously murdered in an anti-Semitic attack on the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh. SWAT Officer Timothy Matson raced into the gunfire and was shot seven times chasing down the killer. Timothy has just had his 12th surgery — but he made the trip to be here with us tonight. Officer Matson: we are forever grateful for your courage in the face of evil.

Tonight, we are also joined by Pittsburgh survivor Judah Samet. He arrived at the synagogue as the massacre began. But not only did Judah narrowly escape death last fall — more than seven decades ago, he narrowly survived the Nazi concentration camps. Today is Judah's 81st birthday. Judah says he can still remember the exact moment, nearly 75 years ago, after 10 months in a concentration camp, when he and his family were put on a train, and told they were going to another camp. Suddenly the train screeched to a halt. A soldier appeared. Judah's family braced for the worst. Then, his father cried out with joy: "It's the Americans."

A second Holocaust survivor who is here tonight, Joshua Kaufman, was a prisoner at Dachau Concentration Camp. He remembers watching through a hole in the wall of a cattle car as American soldiers rolled in with tanks. "To me," Joshua recalls, "the American soldiers were proof that God exists, and they came down from the sky."

I began this evening by honoring three soldiers who fought on D-Day in the Second World War. One of them was Herman Zeitchik. But there is more to Herman's story. A year after he stormed the beaches of Normandy, Herman was one of those American soldiers who helped liberate Dachau. He was one of the Americans who helped rescue Joshua from that hell on earth. Almost 75 years later, Herman and Joshua are both together in the gallery tonight — seated side-by-side, here in the home of American freedom. Herman and Joshua: your presence this evening honors and uplifts our entire Nation.

When American soldiers set out beneath the dark skies over the English Channel in the early hours of D-Day, 1944, they were just young men of 18 and 19, hurtling on fragile landing craft toward the most momentous battle in the history of war.

They did not know if they would survive the hour. They did not know if they would grow old. But they knew that America had to prevail. Their cause was this Nation, and generations yet unborn.

Why did they do it? They did it for America — they did it for us.

Everything that has come since — our triumph over communism, our giant leaps of science and discovery, our unrivaled progress toward equality and justice — all of it is possible thanks to the blood and tears and courage and vision of the Americans who came before.

Think of this Capitol — think of this very chamber, where lawmakers before you voted to end slavery, to build the railroads and the highways, to defeat fascism, to secure civil rights, to face down an evil empire.

Here tonight, we have legislators from across this magnificent republic. You have come from the rocky shores of Maine and the volcanic peaks of Hawaii; from the snowy woods of Wisconsin and the red deserts of Arizona; from the green farms of Kentucky and the golden beaches of California. Together, we represent the most extraordinary Nation in all of history.

What will we do with this moment? How will we be remembered?
I ask the men and women of this Congress: Look at the opportunities before us! Our most thrilling achievements are still ahead. Our most exciting journeys still await. Our biggest victories are still to come. We have not yet begun to dream.

We must choose whether we are defined by our differences — or whether we dare to transcend them.

We must choose whether we will squander our inheritance — or whether we will proudly declare that we are Americans. We do the incredible. We defy the impossible. We conquer the unknown.

This is the time to re-ignite the American imagination. This is the time to search for the tallest summit, and set our sights on the brightest star. This is the time to rekindle the bonds of love and loyalty and memory that link us together as citizens, as neighbors, as patriots.

This is our future — our fate — and our choice to make. I am asking you to choose greatness.

No matter the trials we face, no matter the challenges to come, we must go forward together.

We must keep America first in our hearts. We must keep freedom alive in our souls. And we must always keep faith in America's destiny — that one Nation, under God, must be the hope and the promise and the light and the glory among all the nations of the world!

Thank you. God Bless You, God Bless America, and good night!"
