There are major signs that 'Friends' will leave Netflix after this year

  • Kevin Reilly, the head of content for AT&T's upcoming streaming service, signaled on Monday that "Friends" may not be on Netflix much longer.
  • "Sharing destination assets like that, it's not a good model to share," Reilly said during a Television Critics Association press tour.
  • AT&T and Netflix struck a deal last year to keep "Friends" on Netflix through 2019, while allowing AT&T to also include the show on its own platform.

After AT&T bought Time Warner last year, forming the new WarnerMedia, it was quick to jump into the streaming war. AT&T announced in October that it would launch a streaming service this year, and the future of "Friends" on Netflix has been in doubt because of it.

WarnerMedia's new head of content for the upcoming streaming service, Kevin Reilly, signaled that the hit 1990s Warner Bros. sitcom, which has found a new audience thanks to Netflix, could eventually leave the streaming giant.

READ MORE: 'Friends' will remain on Netflix in 2019, and the streaming service is reportedly dropping $100 million for the rights

"Sharing destination assets like that, it's not a good model to share," Reilly told said during a Television Critics Association press tour on Monday. "They should be exclusive to the service."

Netflix and AT&T struck a deal last year to keep "Friends" on Netflix through 2019, while giving AT&T the freedom to also include it in its own streaming platform, AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson confirmed at December's UBS Global Media and Communications Conference.

Netflix is dropping up to $100 million for the rights to "Friends," according to The New York Times, up from the $30 million is was previously paying per year.

But Reilly's comment hints that AT&T could want "Friends" all for itself, and potentially end a deal with Netflix after 2019.

"Friends" isn't the only major piece of content that AT&T is eyeing for its service.

Reilly said that it would "build on the foundational ethos" of HBO, and also include content from Cartoon Network, the CW, Adult Swim, New Line Cinema, and Warner Bros. He added that a beta version this year will include no original content, which will come in 2020.

Someone tried to sell a 'Meghan Markle inspirational banana' for $1 on eBay

meghan markle bananas ebay

  • At the beginning on February, Meghan Markle wrote messages on bananas for women breaking free from sex work and addiction.
  • Now, someone has tried to sell a banana mimicking Markle's on eBay for 99p ($1.28).
  • Described as a "rare royal collectible," it can't be one of Markle's, as it would have turned brown by now.
  • One person had bid for the item before the listing was taken down from the auction site.

The Duchess of Sussex received mixed reactions when she wrote messages on bananas to be given to women at a charity which helps them break free from sex work and addiction.

She wrote messages such as "You are special,""You are strong," and "You are brave" on the bananas that the women received in food parcels at a lunch in Bristol, UK.

While some people praised Meghan Markle for her positive messages, others suggested the move was patronising

Whatever you think of the gesture, some people are trying to make a quick buck out of the talking point — one eBay user even tried to sell a banana mimicking Markle's for just 99p ($1.28).

Labelled a "rare royal collectible," the "Meghan Markle Inspirational Banana" listing, which has now been removed from the auction site, featured the "poignant" message "you are strong" alongside a heart.

INSIDER managed to capture a photo of the listing before it was removed:

markle banana

The seller, who has received 100% positive feedback on the site, added that the banana was "currently fresh but may have ripened by the time it is received."

The listing implied the banana was one of the ones given out by Markle, but upon inspecting the handwriting, it appeared to actually be a different piece of fruit.

What's more, the bananas Markle wrote on were handed out 11 days ago, meaning they would certainly be brown and speckly by now.

The "brand-new, unused, unopened, and undamaged item" had only received one bid before it was taken down — which could have something to do with the fact it was non-returnable, even if it got bruised in transit.

  • Winter weather was causing flight delays and cancellations on both US coasts Tuesday.
  • More than 2,000 flights were canceled and another 500 delayed in Seattle, New York, Chicago, Toronto, and more.
  • Many airlines had issued travel waivers for affected airports. Check with your carrier if you are flying today.

More than 2,000 flights were canceled and another 5,000 delayed across the United States on Tuesday as winter weather bared down on wide swaths of the country, according to data from FlightAware.

Flight disruptions were occurring on both coasts, with a majority of issues happening in New York, Boston, Chicago, Seattle, and Toronto. The number of delays and cancellations is likely to cascade as winter storm Maya tracks east from the Midwest into the mid-Atlantic and the northeast.

Winter Weather Map

The National Weather Service was warning of multiple storm systems Tuesday morning that were causing hazardous travel conditions around the Great Lakes, the Northeast and West Coast.

"The potential exists for 6 to 12 inches of snow from northern Wisconsin to northern Michigan, and even higher amounts across upstate New York and northern New England with 12 to 18 inches possible,"the agency said on its website.

"A corridor of freezing rain is likely to the south of the heavy snow axis, extending from the central Appalachians to southern New England, and also across southern Michigan."

LaGuardia departures board In addition to the frigid weather, humid air from the Gulf of Mexico is causing heavy rain and the potential for flooding in the Appalachians, the NWS said.

At Chicago’s O’Hare airport, a major hub for United Airlines, arriving flights were delayed by an average of 90 minutes, the Federal Aviation Administration said. In Minneapolis and Detroit, delays averaged 43 minutes as of 9:30 am.

Farther north in Canada, at Toronto’s Person International, departure delays had topped four hours due to snow and ice.

Many airlines have suspended their reservation change policies to accommodate for weather.

If you’re flying on Tuesday, be sure to check with your airline for specific policies and a list of affected airports.

"Here's another statistic that sets this month apart," the Seattle branch of the NWS tweeted. "Including ALL months going back to 1894, there have been only been 5 months (including this one) in which 6+ inch snowfall occurred twice in the same month."

McDonald's is debuting another new breakfast item, and it reveals a massive shift in the fast-food chain's strategy (MCD)

  • McDonald's is launching a new breakfast menu item called Donut Sticks: strips of deep-fried dough sprinkled with cinnamon sugar.
  • Donut Sticks are McDonald's first national rollout of a breakfast baked good in years and will only be available in the morning.
  • While McDonald's has long been the king of fast-food breakfast, the chain has recently lost market share to competitors as rivals double down on morning sales.

McDonald's is debuting Donut Sticks as the chain attempts to beef up its breakfast menu.

On Monday, the fast-food chain confirmed Business Insider's report that Donut Sticks— strips of deep-fried dough sprinkled with cinnamon sugar — will be a new addition to McDonald's breakfast menu. The Donut Sticks will be available across the United States starting February 20, for a limited time.

Read more:LEAKED: McDonald's is debuting a new menu item as the fast-food breakfast battle heats up

Customers will be able to buy six Donut Sticks at the recommended price of $1.29, or a dozen for $2.39. McDonald's is also pushing a bundled deal of a half-dozen Donut Sticks and a small coffee for $1.99.

While McDonald's has long been the king of fast-food breakfast, the chain has recently lost market share to competitors as rivals work on morning sales.

Now, McDonald's is doubling down on breakfast with new deals and menu items. While all-day breakfast helped boost McDonald's sales, the chain is now pivoting to add more morning-only offers to the menu.

In September, McDonald's expanded its $1 $2 $3 menu to include a $1 any-size coffee, $1 Sausage Biscuit, and a $1 Sausage McMuffin. In November it debuted Triple Breakfast Stacks, breakfast sandwiches with three times as much meat — the chain's first new breakfast item in 15 years. McDonald's also mentioned in Monday's statement that it is testing "premium bakery items," including Muffin Toppers and Coffee Cakes, in certain locations.

In January, McDonald's CFO Kevin Ozan addressed the company's attempts to boost traffic, especially during the morning.

"We're doing well with average check growth but we really want the customer comes back and more often," Ozan said on a call with investors. "So there are a number of initiatives that we are going to be deploying, some of these real nuts and bolts stuff, just looking at our staffing levels ... Clearly menu innovations always play a part."

New menu items can help bring in new customers. And, making the items only available at breakfast helps build a morning routine for people who may not be visiting McDonald's regularly for coffee.

The Donut Sticks will represent McDonald's first national rollout of a breakfast baked good in years, though the chain has launched a number of regional tests. Currently, McDonald's only has three items on its national McCafé Bakery menu: the apple pie and two kinds of cookies.

Bill and Melinda Gates revealed their 9 biggest surprises from 2018 in a letter dedicated to Microsoft's late cofounder

Bill and Melinda Gates

  • Bill and Melinda Gates published their annual letter for 2019.
  • The Gates' listed their nine biggest surprises of in 2018, which include home DNA-tests catching out serial killers, sexist data, and the fact that toilets remain largely unchanged.
  • They dedicated the letter to Bill Gates' Microsoft cofounder Paul Allen, who died in October 2018.

Bill and Melinda Gates have released their 2019 annual letter, and its theme is "surprises."

"How would you describe 2018? Was it what you expected? We'd probably say no," the letter begins. "From especially devastating natural disasters on the one hand to record numbers of women campaigning for office on the other, 2018 felt to us like a series of surprises."

The Gates' go on to say that while some events have been welcome, others have been less pleasant. Here are the nine things that surprised Bill and Melinda this year:

1 . Africa is the youngest continent, with a median age of 18

Bill points out that everywhere else in the world the average age is going up. "This can be either an asset or a source of instability. Melinda and I believe that the right investments will unlock the continent’s enormous potential. Young Africans will shape the future of not only their own communities but the entire world," writes Bill.

2. At-home DNA tests can find serial killers — and could also help prevent premature birth

Bill referred in particular to the 2018 capture of the Golden State Killer, 33 years after his crimes. The suspected killer was arrested by investigators after a distant relative of his uploaded their DNA to an open-source DNA-sharing website called GEDmatch.

Read more:The suspected Golden State Killer was finally caught because his relative's DNA was available on a genealogy website

Gates also writes that a large sample provided by 23andMe users gave scientists a clue as to which genes can cause premature labour.

3. We will build an entire New York City every month until 2060.

Gates warns against climate change being exacerbated by electricity usage, manufacturing, and agriculture.

"It's not realistic to think that people will simply stop using fertilizer, running cargo ships, building offices, or flying airplanes. Nor is it fair to ask developing countries to curtail their growth for the sake of everyone else," writes Gates.

"Part of the solution is to invest in innovation in all five sectors so we can do these things without destroying the climate. We need breakthrough inventions in each of the grand challenges."

4. Data can be sexist

The Gates' expressed concern about the reams of missing data about women, particularly in developing countries. Not only is missing data a worry, but Melinda writes that the way data is collected about women can stack the odds against them.

Read more:Why it's totally unsurprising that Amazon's recruitment AI was biased against women

"We like to think of data as being objective, but the answers we get are often shaped by the questions we ask. When those questions are biased, the data is too," she writes.

5. You can learn a lot about processing your anger from teenage boys

The Gates' talked in-depth about attending a meeting of high-school boys talking about how they deal with their anger. Bill said he learned a lot from watching those boys — some of whom had lived through tragedy — find ways of handling their anger.

Read more:After talking to teens about anger management, Bill Gates admits that some of his Microsoft meltdowns were over the top

6. There's a nationalist case for globalism

In a more political section, Bill and Melinda argued that nationalism doesn't necessarily exclude international cooperation.

"There is nothing about putting your country first that requires turning your back on the rest of the world. If anything, the opposite is true," Melinda writes.

Read more:Bill and Melinda Gates say that the best way to put 'America first' is to invest in foreign aid — a not-so-subtle nudge at Trump

Bill specifically appealed for international cooperation when it comes to the treatment of diseases.

7. Toilets haven't changed in a century

The Gates' described a "toilet fair" which they organised in Beijing last year — looking for a new design to oust the flush toilet.

"Several companies are business-ready. Their inventions check almost all the boxes: They kill pathogens, can keep pace with the needs of fast-growing urban areas, and don’t require sewer infrastructure, external water sources, or continuous electricity to operate," writes Bill.

He added the only problem at the moment is affordability, to which end the Gates Foundation will be investing in more R&D.

8. Textbooks are becoming obsolete

Bill said that the thing killing off the textbook is very same invention which helped make his fortune: Software.

"When I told you about this type of software in previous letters, it was mostly speculative. But now I can report that these tools have been adopted in thousands of U.S. classrooms from kindergarten through high school. Zearn, i-Ready, and LearnZillion are examples of digital curricula used by students and teachers throughout the US," he writes.

9. Mobile phones are most powerful in the hands of the poorest women

"For the world’s most marginalized women, a mobile phone doesn't just make their old life more convenient; it can help them build an entirely new life," writes Melinda. However, she pointed to a gender gap in phone ownership in poorer countries.

Finally: The letter is dedicated to Bill's Microsoft cofounder

As a signoff, Bill and Melinda dedicated this year's letter to Paul Allen, who died in October 2018 at the age of 65. They said:

"Paul was a brilliant man with a wide-ranging mind and a special talent for explaining complicated subjects in a simple way. He loved to share his passion for music, science, the arts, sports, philanthropy, and so much more.

"He supported homeless shelters, brain research, and arts education. He helped us see how much good innovation could do in the world. He deserved more time in life, and his passing left a big hole in our hearts. We'll think of him every time we hear Jimi Hendrix."

Paul Allen's love for Jimi Hendrix was well documented, and he even built a museum devoted to the rock legend.

I tried Eero’s $400 WiFi system before Amazon bought the company, and it's one of the best ways to get fast WiFi throughout your home

BI Reviews_Eero 2x1

  • I tried the second-generation mesh WiFi system from Eero, a startup that Amazon recently bought.
  • The system I tried included a primary Eero router and two smaller routers called "Beacons."
  • Eero's second-generation mesh WiFi system delivered stronger WiFi signals and speed than a traditional WiFi router and extender setup usually does.
  • At the same time, major networking companies had also released their own mesh systems when Eero released its second generation of mesh routers that compare with Eero's performance, and they make Eero's prices seem high.

Back in 2016, I tried the original Eero mesh WiFi system. It delivered fast and strong WiFi throughout my home, even in places that were considered WiFi dead-zones. The Eero devices also proved to be much easier to set up than the traditional WiFi extenders, and they delivered much faster speeds, too.

Then, in 2017, Eero came out with new devices that do everything the original models did, but better. The company says the new routers have twice the power and range as the original systems, and there are new satellite devices, called Beacon, that are easier to install around your home.

I tested the second-generation Eero and Beacon shortly after they were released, before Amazon acquired the company.

Here's how well they work:

SEE ALSO: This is the Bluetooth speaker I'd recommend to everyone I know

Eero's latest second-generation mesh routers look better than most standard WiFi routers, which have less-inspired designs and antennas sticking out.

Eero also says the new routers have twice the power and range as the first-generation Eeros.

I tried the option for "most homes," as described by Eero itself, which includes a primary Eero router and two new, smaller Eero Beacons that plug directly into your power outlets without a cord.

Eero says the "most homes" option should cover homes with two to four bedrooms, which is a little vague, as it doesn't tell you the square footage of its range. But it's still a decent indicator for which option is best for you.

The new Beacon satellite units are half the size of the regular Eero router, and they're 20% to 30% more powerful than the original Eero routers. Their direct plug-in design is great for places where you may not want a power cord, like a hallway, stairwell, or power outlets above a kitchen counter. That's a thoughtful design choice, as it gives you more options to place an Eero satellite unit.

I placed the main Eero router in the living room in the middle of my house, a Beacon around the laundry room where a guest is staying in the guest room, and another Beacon upstairs in the master bedroom.

You set up the Eero using its app on your mobile device. Both the Eero units and your smartphone communicate with each other via Bluetooth.

Before doing anything, use your old WiFi connection to download the app. Then, follow the steps in the app to set up a new Eero WiFi network.

The best electric razors you can buy

The Insider Picks team writes about stuff we think you'll like. Business Insider has affiliate partnerships, so we get a share of the revenue from your purchase.

best electric razor

  • If you don’t mind spending a little extra, an electric razor can give you a close shave, while also helping you perfectly groom your facial hair and more.
  • The Braun Series 7 is our top pick because it is powerful, versatile, and effective at removing facial and other body hair.

A few generations ago, when you wanted a really close shave, you’d head to the barber shop, where you’d put your life in the barber’s hands. The barber would hold a straight razor inches from your jugular, and then tell you to relax.

Fat chance.

Fortunately, today you can achieve a close shave at home using electric razors, which remove the possibility of slicing your skin open or worse. Electric razors can’t quite match the closeness of the shave you’d receive from a talented barber, but they’re far more convenient and safe than the straight razor.

An electric razor uses spinning blades or blades that oscillate back and forth to cut the coarse hairs on the face tightly to the skin.

Guards surround the blades on the razor to protect your skin from the moving blades. Most guards also contain slots or holes that catch the hairs and lift them upward, so the blades can clip them more effectively.

The heads on the electric shavers will flex singularly from each other, allowing the razor to match the contours of your face, which helps you achieve a closer shave.

One of the best features of modern electric razors is the ability to use them in wet or dry environments, as well as with shaving gel or foam.

Foil vs. rotary electric razors

The primary choice you’ll have with electric razors is the design you want. Some people prefer a foil-style shaver, while others like a rotary-style shaver.

  • Foil: The foil electric shaver contains oscillating blades that move back and forth at high speeds. These blades are covered with guards that lift hair for cutting and that protect the skin. A foil razor will often have a few separate cutting blades that flex independently to match the contours of your face. However, because a foil head has a rectangular shape, it might not match your face as well as a rotary razor.
  • Rotary: The rotary razor has round blades that spin. You’ll receive protection from the spinning rotary blades with a slotted guard that sits atop the blades and helps to lift the hairs so they’re easier to cut. The heads flex in multiple directions, giving you a close shave by hugging the contours of your face. However, rotary heads are more difficult to clean after shaving versus the foil shaver.

Here are the best electric razors you can buy:

Updated on 02/12/2019 by Malarie Gokey: Added related shaving gear buying guides and updated prices.

Read on in the slides below to check out our top picks.

The best electric razor overall

Why you'll love it: The Braun Series 7 is able to “read” your beard, automatically adjusting its power to give you the closest shave ever.

The Braun Series 7 may just be the most useful item in a man’s bathroom. This electric razor is capable of determining how thick your facial hair is in order to automatically adjust its power, so you’ll be able to get a clean and even shave in just one pass.

This magical power is brought to you courtesy of Braun’s Sonic and AutoSense technology, and when coupled with its eight-directional flexible shaving head, the shaver moves with the contours of your face and neck for a careful, close shave.

Thanks to MicroMotion technology, you’ll be able to move each element of the shaving system independently across delicate or difficult to shave areas like your neck or Adam’s apple. MacroMotion, on the other hand, lets the head of the razor pivot up to 40 degrees, so you can turn your razor any which way as you make your way across your face.

Taken together, these two features mean that you can make quick work of your morning shave, confident that you haven’t missed a spot or left any stubble.

The Braun Series 7 comes with a Clean and Charge Station with cleaning solution, a cleaning brush, and a travel case, which makes maintaining the razor as easy as maintaining your own hygiene.

The Series 7 is also entirely waterproof, so you can even bring it in the shower with you or rinse it off in the sink when you’re done. — Lulu Chang

Pros: Quality construction, waterproof, provides a great, close shave in just one pass

Cons: Some customers have reported a slower shave

Buy the Braun Electric Shaver, Series 7 790cc Men's Electric Foil Shaver/Electric Razor for $199.94 (originally $289.99)

The best high-end electric razor

Why you'll love it: The Braun Series 9290CC offers all of the latest design features found in an electric razor to make it more comfortable to use, while also yielding a close shave.

The Braun Series 9290CC electric foil shaver is an upgrade to both Series 7 and older Series 9 Braun shavers with the latest design features. Although you’ll pay extra for these features, the 9290CC is well worth the extra money.

The cutting head consists of four separate areas. The outer areas cut close to the skin, while the two inner areas lift and cut hairs. That way, you catch hairs that are lying flat and those that are growing in an odd direction.

If you haven’t liked the feel of pivoting heads in electric razors in the past because they didn’t fit the contours of your face well, don't worry about that issue with the 9290CC. Braun included a 10-direction pivoting head that provides all of the flexibility you’ll need.

As one final advantage over its predecessors, the 9290CC has one of the largest heads found on an electric shaver, allowing you to finish shaving a bit more quickly than with other electric razors. This Braun razor will work in wet or dry conditions, and you can use it with shaving foam or gel.

Expert reviewers like this razor, too. Techlicious says the Braun 9290CC is the best electric shaver currently on the market, while Man Tripping likes using the Braun 9290CC as a travel razor, because it ships with many extras, including a case that keeps stray trimmings from flying loosely in your suitcase.

Amazon shoppers give the 9290CC razor great reviews, too. One buyer named JS says the Braun 9290CC is especially good at trimming stubborn and extra-coarse white and gray hairs in your beard, and it also excels at personal grooming in other places. — Kyle Schurman

Pros: Flexible 10-direction pivoting head, offers four different cutting areas for close shaves, excels at trimming stubborn hairs on the face, has a large shaving head to complete the job faster

Cons: Plastic design in the razor body that feels flimsy, carries an extremely high price point

Buy the Braun 9290CC Electric Razor on Amazon for $299.94 (originally $384.99)

The best rotary electric razor

Why you'll love it: The Philips Norelco 9700 boasts eight-directional ContourDetect technology and V-Track Precision Blades for a smooth, comfortable shave.

If you’re looking for an all-in-one razor, look no further than the Philips Norelco 9700. Thanks to the ability to add attachments like trimmers and facial brushes, this is one razor that takes care of everything for you, making your morning grooming routine a breeze.

Key to the 9700’s effectiveness is its ContourDectect technology and V-Track Precision Blades, which are able to cut each individual facial hair, while the three-head shaver tracks closely to your face, getting rid of any and all excess hair.

This razor is able to achieve a remarkably clean cut on each individual hair, but won’t leave you with cuts or scrapes. That’s because the three-headed shaver design allows each head to move in eight directions, contouring to your face and catching more hairs in a single pass than other razors on the market.

Moreover, the Philips Norelco 9700’s V-Track Precision Blades carefully cut hairs from two directions, so you’re actually trimming and not pulling hair from your face.

This razor also comes with a SmartClickc precision trimmer so that you can finish off your grooming by never skimping on the details. You’ll have complete control over the blade, and the ability to easily replace it once it wears dull.

There’s also a large digital display that shows the battery level, cleaning indicator, replacement head indicator, and more at a glance. It’s also remarkably ergonomic in your hand, so shaving is actually comfortable on all counts. — Lulu Chang

Pros: Superior shaving experience; easy-to-read display; extremely close and comfortable shave

Cons: Pricey storage case does not store attachments

Buy the Philips Norelco Electric Shaver 9700 on Amazon for $299.31

Tesla opened a store on Amazon last week that sells branded merchandise like hats and diecast versions of Tesla vehicles.

The move was a small gesture, but a smart one that illustrates the difference between Tesla's retail philosophy and those of its competitors, Gene Munster, a managing partner at Loup Ventures, told Business Insider.

Opening the online store allows Tesla to benefit from the amount of traffic Amazon receives while making it easier for customers to engage with the automaker, he said.

"I'm surprised other car companies haven't done it," Munster said of Tesla's decision to create an Amazon store.

Tesla has long had an unusual retail strategy. Rather than using a network of independent dealerships, Tesla sells its vehicles directly to customers through company-owned stores and its website.

The automaker has done a better job of allowing customers to buy cars online than other automakers, but that doesn't mean Tesla will begin selling its vehicles on Amazon anytime soon, Munster said.

The following products are available on Tesla's Amazon store as of Monday afternoon:

  • iPhone cases: $35 to $45
  • Hoodies: $70 to $75
  • Snapback hats: $25
  • Die-cast Model S P100D, Model S P85, and Model X: $250
  • Mug: $25

Digital red envelopes drove Alipay and WeChat Pay engagement during Spring Festival (TCEHY)

Major Chinese mobile wallets Alipay and WeChat Pay both saw an uptick in engagement with their “red envelope” features — a digital spin on the Chinese tradition of gifting money to friends on special occasions — during the Spring Festival from February 4 to February 9 this year, according to China Daily.

Chinese Mobile Wallet Giants' Active Users

The number of red envelopes sent on WeChat Pay grew 7% year-over-year (YoY) to reach 823 million, while 450 people participated in Alipay’s “five blessings” game to receive lucky money, up 40% annually.

The popularity of this digital version of a cash-gifting tradition reflects the overall trend in China away from cash.  Cash usage in China declined 10% over the last two years and ATMs have plummeted, with 100,000 closures anticipated by 2023.

And mobile payments have reached ubiquity, with 92% of consumers using Alipay or WeChat Pay as their primary payment method. The nationwide shift away from cash and toward digital payments likely contributed to the uptick in sending digital red envelopes, as fewer people presumably wanted to receive cash.

Additional capabilities that promote engagement and spending could provide both mobile wallets with new sources of volume as they face domestic growth barriers. Volume opportunities beyond in-store transactions are necessary for both Alipay and WeChat Pay: Wallets are reaching ubiquity in China, and central bank regulations are imposing a 500 yuan ($74) daily cap on barcode-based mobile payments in an effort to combat fraud.

This makes increasing engagement especially important for mobile wallets in China, where services similar to red envelopes — which are exchanged beyond the New Year for special occasions like weddings and birthdays — could give users more reasons to spend on the platforms.

Further, red envelopes were instrumental in propelling WeChat Pay to the forefront of the Chinese mobile payments landscape when the service launched in 2013: Its red envelope feature went viral and 55% of China’s population sent red envelopes during the Lunar New Year in February 2018, for example. Continuing to launch more features that give users opportunities to engage with and spend on the apps can drive volume for both services.

More than half of transportation and logistics professionals still use a pen and paper to manage their supply chain — here's how blockchain could change that

This is a preview of a research report from Business Insider Intelligence, Business Insider's premium research service. To learn more about Business Insider Intelligence, click here. Current subscribers can read the report here.

Blockchain is seemingly being explored by innovation teams in every corner of every industry. This includes the logistics industry, which, despite continuing on an impressive upward trajectory — the market is expected to reach $15.5 trillion by 2023, up from $8.1 trillion in 2015 — is filled with inefficiencies that the distributed ledger technology (DLT) is potentially well suited to fix.

BiTA

As a result, the DLT has become one of the most attractive investment opportunities for companies in the logistics space; in fact, the market for blockchain technology in supply chain management is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 49% from $41 million in 2017 to $667 million in 2024, according to Zion Market Research.

This is leading some of the largest firms in the logistics industry to explore blockchain and its potential use cases. For example, in 2017, a group of technology, transportation, and supply chain executives formed the Blockchain in Transport Alliance (BiTA) to create a forum for the development of blockchain standards and education for the freight industry. BiTA now has over 450 members, including global heavyweights UPS, FedEx, SAP, Google, Cisco, and Daimler.

However, there are still major hurdles to overcome before the technology can become commonplace. Many companies, especially small- to medium-sized businesses (SMBs), are still unaware of what blockchain is, how it works, or what the benefits of the technology are.

In this report, Business Insider Intelligence explores how blockchain can provide value to the global logistics industry. We break down some of the inefficiencies in the logistics industry that are leading firms to explore blockchain and explain how the technology can be used to solve these issues. Additionally, we examine some specific use cases along the supply chain and identify some of the hurdles to adoption. And finally, we take a look at what needs to occur in the logistics industry for blockchain to be deployed widely.

The companies mentioned in this report are: BiTA, FedEx, IBM, Maersk, Modum, SAP, Volt Technology, and Walmart.

Here are some of the key takeaways from the report:

  • The logistics industry suffers from a number of inefficiencies caused by outdated processes that blockchain could solve. Some of the issues plaguing the space include a lack of transparency caused by siloed, disparate systems, high costs as a result of slow, manual processes, and difficulties related to the amount of time it takes to create and close a contract.
  • Firms that deploy blockchain-based solutions are likely to achieve a more streamlined experience through a reduced need for intermediaries, better planning capabilities as a result of improved visibility, and lower costs through the digitization of documentation.
  • Major companies are allocating resources toward developing a viable blockchain-based platform. Although few solutions have actually been fully developed, companies including IBM and Maersk, as well as retail heavyweight Walmart and FedEx, are making considerable strides in bringing their blockchain solutions to market.
  • However, use of the technology is still in its infancy within the logistics industry. Firms are still confused about the potential benefits of the technology — only 11% of respondents to an MHI Annual Industry survey believe they have a working knowledge of blockchain.
  • Having industry-specific case studies will show firms that are exploring the technology how they can go from testing to full deployment. These high-profile companies, which are some of the biggest and most influential in the world, will also be able to help shape a global standard for the use of blockchain and aid in the development of new legislation.

In full, the report:

  • Sizes the potential market for blockchain in the management of the supply chain.
  • Explains how blockchain technology can be used to improve the inefficiencies that have long plagued the logistics industry.
  • Details how specific companies are testing blockchain technology to enhance parts of the supply chain, including freight shipments and last-mile delivery.
  • Discusses the potential barriers that will challenge the adoption of blockchain in logistics and how these hurdles can be overcome.
  • Pinpoints what will likely need to happen next for the mass adoption of blockchain to occur.

'Fyre Festival' is becoming a catch-all for tons of failed events. Here are things that have been compared to the doomed 'luxury' festival in the Bahamas.

Fyre Festival

  • Fyre Festival has become one of the most infamous failures of the decade.
  • Since the doomed music festival unraveled in the Bahamas, many have referred to other schemes as "the new Fyre Festival."

The image of a cold cheese sandwich tucked into a polystyrene takeout box will forever remind people of the broken promises of 2017's Fyre Festival, which has become one the most infamous failed events of the decade.

The "exclusive" three-day party, which turned into a nightmarish event that left attendees scrambling to get away, resulted in a six-year prison sentence for creator Billy McFarland after he admitted to defrauding investors out of $26 million.

Read more:Here's everything we know about Billy McFarland, the 27-year-old who created the disastrous Fyre Festival and who's now serving a 6-year prison sentence

Since then, the festival has become a reference point for many other schemes, with the commonalities being that expectations fell well short of reality.

Here is a selection of events that have been compared to Fyre Festival in recent years:

Caroline Calloway's "creativity workshops"

27-year-old Instagram influencer and writer Caroline Calloway came under scrutiny in January after a viral Twitter thread claimed that her $165 "creativity workshops" were a "scam."

It transpired that Calloway was very unprepared for the tour she had scheduled: venues weren't secured, planned activities never happened, and she was reportedly even considering asking people to bring their own food despite promising a salad lunch.

Her supporters said she was simply "in over her head," but others drew comparisons to the infamous Fyre Festival.

Calloway listened to her critics and briefly canceled her tour before reinstating it a day later.

"I canceled my tour because I was frightened and feeling worthless because if you read enough bad things about yourself on the internet you will start to believe they're true," she wrote in an Instagram story in January. "You can't let the people who despise you run your f---ing life."

Atomic Wings Superbowl

An Atomic Wings restaurant located in New York City's East Village was accused of being the the "Fyre Festival of Wings" earlier this month after dozens of angry customers took to social media to complain that the food they had preordered for the Super Bowl did not arrive.

"0 wings delivered after 12 hrs for super bowl. Place is a sham. Scam. Fyre festival of Wings," one Yelp user wrote at the time.

The restaurant later said that an equipment failure was behind the massive delays, according to Eater New York.

New York City Pizza Festival

A pizza festival that took place in Brooklyn, New York, in September 2017 and promised to be "a day-long celebration of the dough, cheese, tasty sauces, and delicious toppings" was dubbed the "Fyre Festival" of pizza parties

Attendees, who spent as much as $75 on tickets to the event, were expecting to sample tasty slices from various New York pizzerias. Instead, they were given "tiny slivers" of cold pizza, one attendee said.

The organizers of the festival sent out an apology message on Facebook during the event, warning ticket holders not to come to the evening's tastings because of delays in pizza delivery.

It was subsequently investigated by the New York Attorney General, and ticket holders were refunded.

The competition's heating up over a $35 billion market to treat NASH, a 'silent disease' millions are living with. But some of the early results don't look promising.

Liver transplant

  • NASH, short for nonalcoholic steatohepatitis, is a type of liver disease in which liver fat builds up in people.
  • It affects an estimated 16 million Americans, but many don't know it until it leads to more serious problems like liver failure and cirrhosis.
  • Drugmakers are looking at different ways to treat the condition — both early and later as the disease progresses. Some are conducting research to better understand the genetics and other factors associated with NASH.
  • On Monday, Gilead said that its first late-stage NASH trial for its drug selonsertib had failed. Analysts said the company's appetite to tackle the $35 billion market has only intensified.
  • There are more late-stage trial results expected in 2019 from rivals Intercept, Genfit, and Allergan.

Millions of people are living with a disease they've likely never heard of.

NASH, short for nonalcoholic steatohepatitis, is a type of liver disease in which liver fat builds up in people. NASH has become more common in recent years, and it's estimated to affect about 16 million Americans.

It's often called a "silent" disease because most people don't know they have it until it leads to problems like cirrhosis and liver failure.

While the term NASH was coined in 1980, research into it didn't ramp up right away, partly because the disease was regarded as a mild one. It's a disease linked with our eating habits, or at least exacerbated by them. Although you might not know someone officially diagnosed, people with obesity, Type 2 diabetes, and insulin resistance have an elevated risk of developing the disease. Its links to other conditions have researchers specializing in everything from the liver to diabetes and obesity interested in seeing if there are ways to treat the condition earlier.

NASH is set to surpass viral hepatitis as the biggest reason for liver transplants by 2020, and the eventual size of the market for treating the disease is expected to be anywhere between $20 billion and $35 billion, according to a report from Reuters.

Read more: Trump just promised to end the HIV epidemic. This map shows the areas of the US that are home to the most people living with the disease.

In the meantime, the competition is heating up to see who can find a way to treat it, with companies taking a range of approaches to treat it at different stages, varying based on the specialties of the scientists looking into the treatments.

One of the first drug trials for NASH just failed

In 2019, we're starting to get the first batch of late-stage trial readouts, though so far, it hasn't been too positive. On Monday, Gilead said that its first late-stage NASH trial for its drug selonsertib had failed. Analysts at RBC Capital Markets said the company's appetite to tackle the NASH market has only intensified.

Gilead's stock fell 4.4% to $64.62 on Tuesday.

Other late-stage trial results are expected in 2019 from rivals Intercept, and Genfit, with a drug from Allergan also in a phase 3 trial.

"It's like everybody's feeling a different part of the elephant," Morrie Birnbaum, senior vice president and chief scientific officer of internal medicine at Pfizer told Business Insider last year.

fatty liver disease

Why it's so hard to diagnose

The biggest hurdle to treating NASH, other than finding a drug, is diagnosing it in patients.

Most people in early stages aren't symptomatic, and to know conclusively if a person has NASH requires a liver biopsy — which involves sticking a small needle into your liver and extracting a few cells. Even if they do have it, some might not want to know, since there's no way to treat it.

Researchers are working on imaging and blood tests that could either determine whether people need to take the next step and get a liver biopsy, but those can pick up only certain levels of fibrosis, or tissue scarring.

That means there's no simple blood test to track how the drugs are doing, as there is with cholesterol-lowering medications or diabetes medications.

Even with the hurdle to find patients, the looming issue has led to a rush to develop new treatments, and a hot area for biotech investments, from smaller biotechs like Madrigal, Genfit and Intercept to major drugmakers like Novo Nordisk, Gilead, Novartis, Bristol-Myers Squibb, Allergan, and Pfizer.

Hopes to treat it early

Pfizer built out its NASH program with Birnbaum's help out of a diabetes program that hadn't been panning out. The team started to look at whether the targets they were going after for diabetes could work instead for NASH.

Pfizer's approach is to treat the condition early by clearing out fat that's accumulated in the liver. Birnbaum said the company may have a way to look instead at fat accumulation in the liver via MRI — a much less invasive way than the biopsy — to determine who to treat. Pfizer's farthest along program — a drug known as an acetyl CoA-carboxylase inhibitor — is in a phase 2 trial

Starting earlier can be trickier to prove in clinical trials though, where you need to show benefit that the drug is improving the patient's disease over a set period of time, Dr. Scott Friedman, dean for therapeutic discovery at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mt. Sinai who has consulted with drug companies on NASH drugs including Pfizer, told Business Insider in April. If it's possible that some people in the placebo group will spontaneously get better, it could lead to a failed trial.

It poses a tricky question: "When in the course of NASH does it stop being a biomarker and start being a disease?" Birnbaum said.

And there's another challenge: If it's used earlier by a bigger group of people who at the time don't have many symptoms, like drugs to lower cholesterol, it'll have to be really safe.

"For a metabolic unit like our unit here that historically has developed drugs for diabetes, that has no change for us. We’re used to that high bar of safety," Birnbaum said. "If you were a liver group working on hepatitis C, the bar for safety would be very different."

Genetic and microbial factors

One thing that might help drugmakers who are looking to treat the disease earlier: finding people with a genetic link to NASH.

It's something researchers are starting to get a better picture of. Mutations in the PNPLA3 gene, particularly in Hispanic populations, have been associated with an increased risk of NASH and fatty liver disease. And in March 2018, biotech giant Regeneron said it found a variant on the HSD17B13 gene associated with protection from liver disease and a reduced risk of NASH. Regeneron's plan is to partner with Alnylam to find potential drugs that can do something similar in people who don't have the variant.

Another factor people are looking to crack, Friedman said, is the microbiome, or the collection of bugs that live in and on you. When it comes to our genes, they haven't changed all that much — at least not to the point where NASH has ramped up so suddenly. What has changed, on the other hand, is our diets and our use of antibiotics, both of which impact our microbiome.

"To me, that’s the most compelling," Friedman said.

Already, companies have tapped into this. Second Genome, a company focusing on microbiome-based therapies, has a treatment for NASH that's based on the microbiome that's launched into phase 2 trials in 2019.

This post was initially published in April 2018 and has been updated.

How tall is Kyler Murray? Even the Oklahoma Sooners don't seem to know

kyler murray

  • Heisman Trophy-winner Kyler Murray announced he would play football over baseball.
  • As Murray prepares for the NFL Draft, much of the discussion will be about his height and if he's tall enough to play quarterback in the NFL.
  • There's one problem with the discussion: Oklahoma's website lists Murray as two different heights on different pages.

Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Kyler Murray officially declared on Monday that he would enter the NFL Draft and play football instead of playing baseball.

Murray was drafted by the Oakland A's and even had a contract but had a decision to make over whether to attend the NFL Combine, thus missing the beginning of spring training, or going with baseball. He ultimately chose football, saying he was "raised to play QB."

Read more: 'I was raised to play QB': Kyler Murray chooses NFL over baseball

Now, over the next two months until the draft, much of the discussion around Murray will be about his height. NFL teams get skittish about short quarterbacks, and Murray isn't exactly built like Carson Wentz or Cam Newton.

But just how tall is Murray, exactly? It appears the Oklahoma Sooners — the school Murray attended — don't even know.

On Oklahoma's website, Murray has a player profile for both baseball and football. The problem is he's listed at 5-foot-10 on the football page and 5-foot-11 on the baseball page.

kyler murray height

The difference between 5-foot-10 and 5-foot-11 is minimal. The discussion might be even bigger if one side listed him as 6 feet while the other listed him as 5-foot-11.

Plenty of shorter quarterbacks have thrived in the NFL, from Russell Wilson to Drew Brees to Baker Mayfield. With NFL offenses evolving to make quarterbacking easier than ever, Murray's height shouldn't be the problem teams once thought it would be.

I drove a $67,000 BMW M2 Competition to see if the sports car is worth the steep cost — here's the verdict

BMW M2 Competition

  • The BMW M2 Competition is a two-door rocket that replaces the M2, which was already a fantastic sport coupé.
  • The M2 was $54,500, well-equipped. The M2 Competition starts at about $59,000, but my test car tipped the cost scales at $67,045.
  • The BMW M2 has an impressive 405-horsepower inline six-cylinder engine under the hood.

BMW's M Sport division doesn't disappoint. But in the past — with the lineup starting at the M3, moving on to the M4, through the M5 with some the muscular X6 M crossover and convertible trims thrown in — the entire M family had gotten kind of large, size-wise, leaving room for a smaller ride that evoked Bimmers of old.

Enthusiasts craved such a car, and with the M2, they got it (actually, with the M235i, they already something worth considering, but it lacked proper M Sport power). I was blown away by the M2 when I drove the machine.

"For the true believers, this is going to be the perfect car," I wrote in my review. "It is completely optimized for thrills behind the wheel. And yet it is far from useless for quick runs to the grocery store (I picked up a case of wine, and there was plenty of room in the trunk) or fetching the kids from school."

BMW has phased out the M2 and replaced it with the M2 Competition. The M2 Competition costs more, but it brings more M to the party. I knew it was going to be good, probably very, very good. But would it be worth the extra scratch? Read on to find out.

I wouldn't call cold, snowy conditions in suburban New Jersey ideal for a 405-horsepower, rear-wheel-drive sport coupé. But on the plus side — winter tires!

Fortunately, I did most of my testing before the snow hit. The paint job was a fetching "Hockenheim Silver Metallic," and it was $550 extra (the base price was $59,000). Hockenheim, by the way, is home to the Hockenheimring, a German race track.

I had already enjoyed the M2, saying that it "struck a tuning fork deep in my automotive psyche." The M2 Competition takes its place.

Here's how Doncic became one of basketball's biggest stars:

Luka Doncic's rookie season has made him the frontrunner for Rookie of the Year. He's averaging 20.8 points, 7 rebounds, and 5.5 assists per game for the Mavericks. He's become the leader of the team on the floor and has wowed fans with his crafty moves and ability to come up big in the clutch.

Of course, if you followed Doncic's rise to the NBA, this shouldn't be surprising.
