The Fed just said it contributed to the stock market's wild ride in December

  • December's FOMC communications were seen as contributing to a turbulent month in financial markets.
  • Stocks had posted their worst December since the Great Depression.
  • Market sentiment fell after FOMC communications were seen as not fully appreciating softening data, meeting minutes said Wednesday.

Communications from Federal Reserve officials were among a string of factors behind the gloomy mood on Wall Street at the end of 2018, adding to concerns about political and economic strains, the central bank said in meeting minutes out Wednesday.

"A variety of factors—including FOMC communications, weaker-than-expected data, trade policy uncertainties, the partial federal government shutdown, and concerns about the outlook for corporate earnings—were cited by market participants as contributing to a deterioration in risk sentiment early in the period," the minutes said.

As US stocks plunged toward their worst year since 2008 and as trade and growth uncertainties persisted, market watchers had been closely monitoring December's meeting for signs the central bank could put the brakes on rate hikes.

While conveying a more tentative approach to monetary policy in 2019 than previously expected, the Federal Open Market Committee had that month increased its benchmark interest rate by a quarter percentage point to a target range of between 2.25% and 2.5%. It cited a strong labor market and inflation levels that were approaching its target.

"December FOMC communications were reportedly perceived by market participants as not fully appreciating the implications of tighter financial conditions and softening global data over recent months for the U.S. economic outlook," the minutes said.

At the January FOMC meeting, officials reversed further and signaled the end of this tightening cycle could be in sight.

$5.3 trillion fund giant Vanguard hired a new strategy chief, and it highlights one of the hottest new hiring areas at trillion-dollar asset managers

Brent Beardsley Vanguard chief strategy officer

  • Vanguard in January tapped consulting firm BCG's former head of asset and wealth management as its new chief strategy officer.
  • In a move not previously reported, Brent Beardsley replaced Ann Combs, who retired at year-end.
  • The role of chief strategy officer is increasingly important for large asset managers, executive recruiters told Business Insider.

Vanguard just tapped a partner at a powerhouse consulting firm to head up strategy for the asset management firm.

In a move not previously reported, Brent Beardsley in January joined $5.3 trillion asset manager as its chief strategy officer after spending more than 17 years at BCG, where his roles included global head of asset and wealth management.

Beardsley replaced Ann Combs, who retired at year-end, a Vanguard spokeswoman confirmed.

Read more:We asked 8 Wall Street recruiters about the hottest trends in hiring across banking, trading, hedge funds, and asset management

Beardsley is leading a team responsible for corporate and business line strategy, which includes its innovation center

While strategy heads are common at most companies large and small, the asset management industry (with the exception of heavily diversified firms like BlackRock) has only begun to add the role in recent years, executive recruiters say.

"An asset management company used to be a pretty rudimentary business to run, with focus primarily on manufacturing and distribution," said Arnaud Tesson, the head of US asset management at executive recruiting firm Egon Zehnder. "Now, it has become more complex, the environment is more complex and senior needs are changing."

The asset management industry is facing increased pressures, as volatile markets pushed billions of capital out in the last few months and demand for lower fees continued to eat into revenue. Vanguard, however, has largely weathered those storms, pulling in $234 billion last year – the most new money for any asset manager, according to Morningstar.

Sign up here for our weekly newsletter Wall Street Insider, a behind-the-scenes look at the stories dominating banking, business, and big deals.

"The asset management industry was traditionally not very strategic, but now firms realize the need for a long-term approach that takes the outside world into account," Tesson said. "We see increasing interest in building out or strengthening strategy teams, starting with a head of strategy and then everything under that. The industry hasn't developed those people, so they often have to import them from financial services or other industries."

Tesson said he sees more interest from asset managers of all sizes for a head of strategy. Last week, for example, multi-family office Proficio Capital Partners, which manages $1 billion, hired a former Wellington Management vice president for its first chief strategy officer.

Another executive recruiter cited the headwinds facing asset managers, including market volatility, fee pressures, and changing investor preference, as catalysts for the uptick in the strategy roles she's seen.

"If firms aren't considering strategy, they're burying their heads in the sand," she said.

Samsung has announced the Galaxy Watch Active, the newest smartwatch in the company's expanding line of wearable tech. Pre-orders for the Galaxy Watch Active will start at $199, and the smartwatch will be available in stores on March 8th 2019.

The Galaxy Watch Active comes in a single size with a 1.1-inch display and a total diameter of 40mm. The device weighs 25 grams and has two buttons on the right side of its face. Samsung revealed the Galaxy Watch Active on Wednesday alongside the latest version of its flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S10. The company also announced the Galaxy Fit, a small water-resistant band with a pedometer and heart rate tracker.

The first Samsung Galaxy Watch was released in August 2018 as a follow up to the Samsung Gear line of smartwatches. Overall, the new Galaxy Watch Active is slightly smaller than the standard Galaxy Watch and the Apple Watch.

The new watch can monitor the wearer's heart rate and track a variety of exercises, integrating with Samsung's Galaxy Wearable app for advanced tracking. The smartwatch comes with standard 3G LTE and Bluetooth support, and can charge wirelessly using Samsung's proprietary charger.

Unfortunately, the Galaxy Watch Active will lose access to some features when paired to an iPhone. Apple's iOS operating system will prevent users from being able to answer iMessages on the watch, but the Samsung Watch app will help manage fitness features.

Pre-orders for the Galaxy Watch Active will be available on Samsung's official website, starting at $199. The original Galaxy Watch remains available in two sizes, 42mm and 46mm, and starts at $329.

priyanka chopra

  • Priyanka Chopra is an actress known for "Quantico" and "Baywatch."
  • She's also a Bollywood star.
  • She's also made headlines this year for her relationship with Nick Jonas.
  • Chopra stays fit by practicing yoga, mixing cardio and conditioning, and doing her own stunts.

Whether you know Priyanka Chopra from "Quantico,""Baywatch," her work in Bollywood, or her lavish wedding to singer Nick Jonas, you probably know there is a lot out there to envy about her lifestyle.

Also worthy of envy is her workout regimen.

Chopra takes a realistic, low-key approach to exercise. Here's what Priyanka Chopra does to stay in shape.

She does her own stunts

One way to stay fit? Perform all the punches, kicks, and chokeholds most people only see on TV yourself.

"I have to stay super active and agile because I do my own stunts," Chopra told Women's Health magazine in 2016. "I do all my fights myself. I trust my body and my instincts."

She also does her stunts in heels, which she demonstrated on Live with Kelly in 2016. During the demonstration, Kelly Ripa called her "freakishly strong."

She does yoga

In 2008, she told the Times of India she finds the practice both "relaxing and very energizing" and "great to keep your mind and body healthy."She also said her workouts tend to last around an hour.

A post shared by Priyanka Chopra Jonas (@priyankachopra) on Dec 30, 2018 at 5:57am PST on

In December, Chopra posted several Instagrams of her hitting the slopes in Switzerland, along with Nick and Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner. Skiing happens to be one of the best workouts a person can do according to Time, alpine skiing combines endurance and resistance training, so it has the same physical effect as rowing or cycling workouts. Because of this, skiing has positive effects on the heart and circulation.

She mixes cardio and conditioning

According to Women's Health Australia, Samir Juara, a trainer who has worked with Chopra, said she runs on the treadmill for about 15 minutes as a warm-up. Then, she moves onto strength and conditioning, which might involve push-ups, reverse lunges, reverse crunches, bench jumps, bicep curls, and planks.

She doesn't devote too much time to exercise

Chopra is clearly fit. Still, she says she isn't too obsessive about exercising.

"Life is just really fast-paced and you don't have to kill yourself in the gym," she told Women's Health. "You don't have to starve yourself. I love having my pizzas and burgers and buffalo wings, on the side, for sure. But I like staying fit as well."

The Oscars almost had a viewers' choice award years ago that people would vote for online

Tina Fey Mark Boal Robert Downey Jr AP

  • 2010 Academy Awards producer Bill Mechanic came up with an idea to make the show more hip: a viewers' choice award.
  • He told Business Insider why it never happened.

It turns out the idea of creating a popular movie category for the Oscars isn’t the most radical idea to make Hollywood’s biggest night more hip.

Nine years ago the show almost had a viewers' choice award.

Bill Mechanic, who produced the 82nd Oscars — hosted by Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin in 2010 — said leading up to the show he hoped to give it a shot in the arm by presenting a new award that people at home could participate in.

“I thought in keeping with today's world there should be a popular vote online during the show from the audience,” Mechanic told Business Insider.

Mechanic — a former Fox executive and producer of best-picture nominee “Hacksaw Ridge” — produced the show with Adam Shankman (director of "What Men Want") and delivered one of the highest-rated in the last decade (almost 42 million viewers) thanks to the rare two-host approach and having one of the biggest box-office hits of all time as a best picture nominee, “Avatar.” (The win went to “The Hurt Locker.")

But Mechanic’s hopes to do something radical while keeping the integrity of the night, he said, “fell on deaf ears.”

"A lot of people in the Academy don't want to change anything and I think they are wrong not from a purist standpoint but from an entertainment standpoint," he said.

2010 Oscars APThis is one of the reasons why Mechanic resigned from its board of governors last year.

In a strongly worded letter to the president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, Mechanic said the leadership had "failed to move the Oscars into the modern age." He added that the show was "long and boring" and that over the past decade, the Academy had "nominated so many smaller independent films that the Oscars feel like they should be handed out in a tent."

Read more: OSCARS ON LIFE SUPPORT: Academy insiders describe the problems plaguing Hollywood's biggest night, and how it could rebound

"All my criticisms of when I quit the board are still valid," Mechanic told Business Insider recently. "The simplest thing about the Academy, which is what got me riled up, is you have the best artists working, period, and that the membership is not being used to the degree that it should be is, to me, wrong ... Every idea should be considered."

But the ideas that the Academy came up with in an attempt to keep this year's Oscars (airing Sunday) from running at just three hours didn't go over well.

There was the idea of cutting out some of the performances from the best song nominees. Then there was a plan to give out some technical awards — like cinematography and editing — during commercial breaks. Both were scrapped following tremendous blowback on social media and within the movie community.

Mechanic wasn’t involved with the idea of a popular Oscar (which was also scrapped following public outcry) when he was on the board of governors, but he believes something like a viewers' choice category can work.

“That takes nothing away from the artistic achievement for best picture,” he said.

Drones are no longer a cool novelty only a handful of companies are testing — they're infiltrating a slew of industries and applications

$

Drones — also commonly referred to as unmanned aircraft — are no longer a cool, new novelty that companies in only a handful of industries are testing.

Businesses across various industries and levels of government in the US are utilizing at least a handful of drones. But more importantly, drone users are now realizing a deep return on their investments from the aircraft's ability to help save hours of time and labor.

Farmers' Plans for Drones in 2018

However, to successfully get a drone program up and running, businesses need to have an idea of what they want the aircraft to do, and the value they hope to create. To that end, companies need to know what their competitors are doing with the aircraft so they can plan their own projects accordingly.

In this report, Business Insider Intelligence details how unmanned aircraft are disrupting a slew of different industries, including agriculture, construction and mining, insurance, media and telecommunications, and the public sector. We also size the market for global enterprise drone shipments, and pinpoint the features that make drones useful tools within different industries. Lastly, we make predictions for how drone use in these industries will evolve over the next five to 10 years and to what extent their impact will be magnified over this period.

Here are some of the key takeaways:

  • Since the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) implemented its Part 107 regulations for unmanned aircraft in August 2016, the commercial drone industry in the US has taken off.
  • Companies across the US have rushed to deploy drones to cut costs, boost operational efficiency, and open up new streams of revenue. Meanwhile, firms elsewhere in the world have taken notice and ramped up their own drone projects.
  • Unmanned aircraft have the potential to create the greatest business value in the construction, mining, and agriculture industries. The agriculture industry was a relatively early adopter of drones, and today one-third of farmers in the US plan to use at least one drone this year. Meanwhile, drones will have a less significant, yet noticeable, impact on media, telecommunications, and insurance businesses.
  • Drones will lead these industries to become highly data-driven in the coming years, making the aircraft a must-have for companies to keep pace with their competitors. They will allow businesses to synthesize and analyze trends in their workflows to bolster their operational efficiency and predict problems before they happen.

In full, the report:

  • Analyzes the development of drone use across five different industries.
  • Offers a look at how drone use in these industries will evolve over the coming years.
  • Sizes the market for enterprise drone shipments over a seven-year period, both in the US and abroad.

'The Good Place' star Jameela Jamil calls Karl Lagerfeld a 'ruthless, fat-phobic misogynist' in a series of tweets

  • "The Good Place" star Jameela Jamil took to Twitter on Wednesday to share her thoughts regarding designer Karl Lagerfeld, who died on Tuesday at the age of 85.
  • "A ruthless, fat-phobic misogynist shouldn't be posted all over the internet as a saint gone-too-soon. Talented for sure, but not the best person," Jamil wrote.
  • She also shared a link to an article written by Lara Witt that pointed out some of Lagerfeld's past controversies.
  • Her comment sparked immediate conversations online, especially after many celebrities shared fond memories of working or interacting with Lagerfeld prior to his death.

"The Good Place" star Jameela Jamil star isn't mincing words following the death of Chanel creative director Karl Lagerfeld

Taking to Twitter on Wednesday, Jamil slammed Lagerfeld, who died in a Paris hospital on Tuesday at the age of 85.

The actress began by sharing an article written by Lara Witt titled "Stop Mourning Oppressors: Anti-Condolences for Karl Lagerfeld." In it, Witt acknowledged Lagerfeld's impact on the fashion industry, but said that he "was also an islamophobic, racist, misogynistic, fatphobic rape apologist." She also called attention to Lagerfeld's most controversial comments that he made over the years.

Jamil shared a link to the piece and tweeted: "I'm glad somebody said it. Even if it is a little soon. A ruthless, fat-phobic misogynist shouldn't be posted all over the internet as a saint gone-too-soon. Talented for sure, but not the best person. "

Her comment sparked immediate conversations online, especially after many celebrities shared fond memories of working or interacting with Lagerfeld prior to his death.

The late designer was creative director for Chanel, Fendi, and his own label Karl Lagerfeld, and impacted the fashion world in a number of ways. Outside of his work, Lagerfeld was known for making zingy comments and, sometimes, controversial one-liners. For example, he once called the singer Adele "a little too fat" and said that "Russian men are not good looking."

In response to one person who suggested that Jamil "think about this in a balanced way," the actress said that people like Lagerfeld "shouldn't be glorified if they've never changed or apologized."

Jamil, who has openly slammed celebrities for endorsing detox and weight-loss products, added that Lagerfeld was a powerful figure who was "openly fatphobic, racist and sexist." She also said that she planned to compile her thoughts into an essay.

"How problematic the industry has been for girls is too complex for this," she said.

Model and actress Cara Delevingne, who has modeled for Chanel before and worked with Lagerfeld, also stepped in to share her opinion.

"I understand what you were trying to do and I apologize if I offended you or anyone else," Delevingne said. "I just don't feel that living in the past and bringing up things that have already happened helps anything. Let's move forward and lead with love."

Chanel Airport Fashion - Cara Delevingne, Karl Lagerfeld

Jamil saw the comment and explained that she felt the need to shed light on Lagerfeld's past controversies and those he offended.

Delevingne said that she doesn't "condone" Lagerfeld words and actions, but added that "he is a human being like all of us who made mistakes and we should all have the chance to be forgiven for that." She went on to say that there should instead be conversations about living people who are causing harm.

In response, Jamil said that people shouldn't disregard "decades of abusive rhetoric towards minorities."

The went on to explain that "it's important to just be honest" and not "just brush aside his bold inhumanity because we're leading with love."

Delevingne responded by saying that Lagerfeld "is not the problem."

"The way the world is... and the way the industry has been for a long time. It's time for change and I agree with that," she wrote.

Jamil said that putting the blame on an industry rather than an individual is similar to the way some excused Harvey Weinstein's allegations of sexual misconduct.

"We are all to be held accountable for our behavior," she wrote."I have to. You have to. And we have to be respectful to those who have been hurt by not minimizing or apologizing for extremely unkind words from a *very* powerful man."

The actress added that her intention wasn't to hurt Delevingne or anyone. She also said that the model wasn't affected by Lagerfeld's past remarks because she's "thin, and white, and incredibly privileged."

Jamil concluded her exchange with Delevingne by saying that she would be open to continuing the conversation.

  • Some fans are speculating that the two are dating, but neither actor has commented on the dating reports.
  • This isn't the first time Centineo has been rumored to be dating a fellow celebrity.

After a recent Instagram exchange, some fans are speculating that the "To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before" star Noah Centineo could have a potential romance with "To the Bone" actress Lily Collins.

On Tuesday, Centineo took to Instagram to share photos from his new Calvin Klein campaign. In the three photos, Centineo is reclining in a beach chair shirtless, sitting in a beach chair fully-clothed, and posing in boxer-briefs while gazing off to the side.

Fans of the actor noticed that Collins left a flirty comment on the post. "I never look that good when I lounge," Collins commented on the photo, as per E!'s report. "Oh please," Centineo replied, adding a fire emoji.

Following the comments, fans began to speculate that the two could be dating, but neither Collins nor Centineo have commented on the dating rumors at this time.

In January, the two worked on a music video together

The exchange isn't as out-of-the-blue as it may seem: Centineo and Collins worked together last month when he directed her in DJ ARTY's "Save Me Tonight" music video. In the video, Centineo helps Collins pick up her books and the two become fast friends.

"Thank you guys for having me be part of such an insanely fun day," Collins tweeted at the time.

"I convinced @artymusic to let me direct the music video for 'Save Me Tonight' and somehow @lilycollins agreed to star in it with a bunch of our friends," Centineo wrote on his Twitter in January.

This is a preview of a research report from Business Insider Intelligence, Business Insider's premium research service. To learn more about Business Insider Intelligence, click here.

Drone technologies continue to improve at a rapid pace and are slowly pushing the unmanned aircraft toward the mainstream. Companies in a variety of industries are now looking to use drones to cut costs, boost efficiencies, and create new revenue streams and business values, such as last-mile retail deliveries.

But regulatory roadblocks are still holding back widespread commercial drone use in most large, developed markets. Many countries still have laws on the books that regulate drones as other aircraft, such as planes or helicopters, and prevent unmanned aircraft from flying beyond a few miles from the operator. That makes laws and regulations arguably the chief determining factor in the development of the commercial drone industry worldwide.

This new report from Business Insider Intelligence, Business Insider's premium research service, will give a high-level overview of commercial drone regulations around the world. We detail the major changes in global drone regulations over the past year, and show how regulators are working to stay ahead of the nascent, yet valuable devices. In addition, we show how regulatory changes will impact the industry and allow for new enterprise use cases in the next few years.

Here are some of the key takeaways:

  • Regulations have helped the US, Europe, and China become the three largest potential markets in the world for commercial drone use.
  • In the US, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) governs all commercial and consumer drone use. Meanwhile, a slew of states have their own regulations that companies deploying drones have to navigate through.
  • In Europe, the lack of EU-wide drone regulations creates a patchwork of national regulations that resembles the state-level rules in the US.
  • In China, the military controls over half of the airspace, confining drones to a small area of the country relative to the US and other nations.
  • While on paper several of the regulations in Europe are the same as in the US, many European countries have been far more lenient in granting exemptions to their requirements.
  • Commercial drone laws in most of these countries are set to change to allow for more widespread use in the next couple years, helping operators fly their aircraft in new locations and for new use cases.

In full, the report:

  • Offers an in-depth overview of the current regulatory landscapes at the national, transnational, and local levels, and discusses how they're shaping the development of the drone industry in several large markets.
  • Gives examples of how companies are working with and around these regulations to deploy drones in a manner that government officials find permissible.
  • Provides a look at what regulations will change in the coming years, and explains how that will impact companies operating drones.

  • Warning: Spoilers ahead for the first two "How to Train Your Dragon" movies.

The beloved "How to Train Your Dragon" trilogy comes to an end with the third installment, "The Hidden World," arriving in theaters on Friday. Based on a book series by Cressida Cowell which was adapted by director Dean Deblois, the movies tell the story of a land where dragons and men have learned to live in harmony.

Keep reading for a look at the full cast of voice actors who star in "How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World."

The main character of the series is Hiccup, the first Viking in his tribe to realize dragons aren't the mortal enemies of humans.

Trump is already brainstorming nicknames for the large 2020 field of Democrats

President Donald Trump speaks to a Venezuelan American community at Florida Ocean Bank Convocation Center at Florida International University in Miami, Florida, on Monday.

  • Trump is already reportedly developing nicknames for Democratic candidates challenging him in 2020.
  • During the 2016 election, Trump berated opponents with comical and sometimes cruel nicknames.
  • The nicknames were often used in campaign ads by the Republican National Committee.

President Donald Trump is reportedly brainstorming new nicknames with staff as the field of 2020 Democratic challengers grows larger every few days, according to a report by the Associated Press.

Read more: The most disparaging nicknames Trump used for his political enemies and former allies in 2018

Trump routinely assigns comical, cruel, and sometimes racially-tinged nicknames to political opponents and even Republicans who dare criticize him.

Trump has already given nicknames to some of the Democratic candidates. He has long referred to Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts as "Pocahontas." More recently, Trump attempted to test out a name on Sen. Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota during her 2020 campaign announcement.

"Well, it happened again. Amy Klobuchar announced that she is running for President, talking proudly of fighting global warming while standing in a virtual blizzard of snow, ice and freezing temperatures," he wrote on Twitter."Bad timing. By the end of her speech she looked like a Snowman(woman)!"

During the 2016 Republican presidential primary, Trump developed monikers for several candidates, such as "low energy" Jeb Bush, "lyin'" Ted Cruz, and "little" Marco Rubio.

When former Republican Sen. Bob Corker of Tennessee criticized Trump in October of 2017, the president took to his morning Twitter tirade to don the recently retired lawmaker as "liddle" in an apparent reference to Corker's short stature.

"The Failing [New York Times] set Liddle' Bob Corker up by recording his conversation," Trump tweeted. "Was made to sound a fool, and that's what I am dealing with!"

Most infamously, Trump spent the better portion of his 2016 presidential campaign calling his opponent by the nickname "Crooked" Hillary Clinton, which the Republican National Committee went on to use in official campaign ads.

Whether Trump will be able to develop nicknames that stick — or in any way affect public opinion — is still unclear.

How PEZ Is Made

  • PEZ is an American candy staple. First created as a breath mint more than 90 years ago, today PEZ has an endless amount of flavors and types of dispensers.
  • They've been manufactured in the same factory since the early 1970s in Orange, Connecticut.
  • The factory makes about 12 million individual tablets a day.

Following is a transcript of the video:

Narrator: Recognizable for their brick shape and fun dispensers, PEZ is an American candy staple.

First created as a breath mint more than 90 years ago, today, PEZ has an endless amount of flavors and types of dispensers. But how does a family-owned company that started in 1927 continue to find success in the competitive candy industry today?

Shawn Peterson: It's nostalgia. It's relatable. I think everybody's had one at some point in their life, whether it was purposefully or just given as a gift, but everybody knows what a PEZ dispenser is, and even if you say PEZ dispenser, and they're like, "what?" You kinda give 'em one of these... "Oh, yeah, I know what you're talkin' about," you know, and how many brands really have that level of recognizability?

Narrator: Orange, Connecticut, has been home to the PEZ factory since 1973, and we were able to get a look inside. So we're all geared up, we have our lab coat on, our hairnet. Shawn is gonna give me rare access to see how PEZ candies are made here in the factory. So, are you ready, Shawn?

Shawn Peterson: Let's go.

Narrator: The process begins with granulated table sugar, which is stored outside in the factory's sugar silo. 600 pounds of sugar are used in one batch of PEZ, totaling around one million rolls of wrapped candy per day. A giant set of rollers crushed that sugar to turn it into a powder to easily shape the brick tablets. To get PEZ's signature sweet taste, corn syrup and flavorings are carefully weighed and added to the sugar.

Next up, the tablet press, a powerful machine that compresses the mix into the brick-shaped tablets.

It smells so good in here.

The factory makes about 12 million individual tablets a day. Tablets are sorted into bins and placed on the conveyor belt, making their way into the wrapping room.

The candies are then poured out of the bins and tightly pushed down a conveyor in rolls of 12. My favorite part: watching the endless rows of tablets form into a completed PEZ pack.

This is the Vanilla Cupcake flavor that we just saw being made. It's hot. It's right off the machine. I'm excited to try this flavor. It's a new one for PEZ. I'm gonna eat this whole pack.

Of course, one of the best parts of PEZ is the fun dispenser that it's paired with. It's amazing to see what part of the process is done by machinery and what part is done by hand.

Shawn Peterson: Right.

Narrator: Yeah.

From there, the PEZ candies are ready to be packaged and shipped to stores. And I couldn't resist stopping by the PEZ Visitor Center on my way out.

Shawn Peterson: It's one of those things that's stood the test of time, and we want people to continue to enjoy that. We still look for what the new, hottest properties are, the trends that are gonna hopefully be around for a while, we try to capture that in a PEZ dispenser. It's fun. That's really what we need today.

$650 billion asset manager Franklin Templeton is embedding data scientists in a key investment team, and it's a sign of how the industry is changing

Joe Boerio Franklin Templeton

  • The boundaries between technology and business are already blurring. Soon, the two won't be separate, Joe Boerio, Franklin Templeton's chief technology officer, told Business Insider.
  • In addition to embedding data scientists in investment teams, Boerio is training finance professionals to have some technology skills.
  • It's easier to teach investing staff tech skills than vice versa, he said.

The boundaries between technology and business are blurring more than ever in finance, said the longtime chief technology officer for a $650 billion firm.

"Longer-term, you won’t have the separation of tech and business," Joe Boerio told Business Insider during a recent interview at Franklin Templeton's San Mateo headquarters.

See more: The CTO at $55 billion asset manager Cohen & Steers explains why AI is 'in the middle of a hype cycle' and what he's investing in instead

Boerio, who has worked on technology at Franklin for more than 30 years, said the firm has adopted a "hub-and-spoke" model for integrating technology into its investment teams, with a central tech team serving various departments, and data scientists working with particular groups. For example, Franklin bought Random Forest Capital, a data science-focused investment team last year, then embedded the team in its fixed income group.

That model helps with an asset management-wide issue: technologists' lack of investment-specific knowledge.

"Everyone across industries is facing the domain expertise problem, but it’s exacerbated in investments," Boerio said.

Sign up here for our weekly newsletter Wall Street Insider, a behind-the-scenes look at the stories dominating banking, business, and big deals.

Because "it’s easier to teach someone with investment skills the technology than vice versa," Franklin Templeton is working on enhancing its investors' expertise.

"We’ll see more formal programs over the next few years with ways to measure levels of data science adoption and maturity of practices within teams," Boerio said. "It could be a combination of things that gets you to a desired state maturity level. The ongoing challenge with maturity is that it is a moving target with the advancements of technology and business the definition of maturity is always in motion."

This is a preview of a research report from Business Insider Intelligence, Business Insider's premium research service. To learn more about Business Insider Intelligence, click here.

Edge computing solutions are key tools that help companies grapple with rising data volumes across industries. These types of solutions are critical in allowing companies to gain more control over the data their IoT devices create and in reducing their reliance on (and the costs of) cloud computing.

edge popularity

These systems are becoming more sought-after — 40% of companies that provide IoT solutions reported that edge computing came up more in discussion with customers in 2017 than the year before, according to Business Insider Intelligence’s 2017 Global IoT Executive Survey. But companies need to know whether they should look into edge computing solutions, and what in particular they can hope to gain from shifting data processing and analysis from the cloud to the edge.

There are three particular types of problems that edge computing solutions are helping to combat across industries:

  • Security issues. Edge computing can limit the exposure of critical data by minimizing how often it’s transmitted. Further, they pre-process data, so there’s less data to secure overall.
  • Access issues. These systems help to provide live insights regardless of whether there’s a network connection available, greatly expanding where companies and organizations can use connected devices and the data they generate.
  • Transmission efficiency. Edge computing solutions process data where it’s created so less needs to be sent to the cloud, leading to lower cloud storage requirements and reduced transmission cost.

In this report, Business Insider Intelligence examines how edge computing is reducing companies' reliance on cloud computing in three key industries: healthcare, telecommunications, and the automotive space. We explore how these systems mitigate issues in each sector by helping to efficiently process growing troves of data, expanding the potential realms of IoT solutions a company can offer, and bringing enhanced computing capability to remote and mobile platforms.

Here are some key takeaways from the report:

  • In healthcare, companies and organizations are using edge computing to improve telemedicine and remote monitoring capabilities.
  • For telecommunications companies, edge computing is helping to reduce network congestion and enabling a shift toward the IoT platform market.
  • And in the automotive space, edge computing systems are enabling companies to increase the capabilities of connected cars and trucks and approach autonomy.

In full, the report:

  • Explores the key advantages edge computing solutions can provide.
  • Highlights the circumstances when companies should look into edge systems.
  • Identifies key vendors and partners in specific industries while showcasing case studies of successful edge computing programs.

A worker at John Wayne Airport in Orange County, California, was killed on Tuesday when a tire on which he was doing maintenance work exploded, the Associated Press reported.

The incident took place Tuesday evening around 11:30 p.m. local time inside a workshop in the airport's terminal building, the local CBS News affiliate, KCBS reported.

The force of the blast ruptured a pipe in the workshop and set off its sprinkler system but did not have any effect on airport operations beyond that.

I never travel without this $17 backpack — it fits a ton but can still fold up into the palm of my hand

Gonex backpack review amazon

  • The Gonex Packable Travel Backpack is a lightweight travel bag that, in my experience, has lived up to its amazing reviews on Amazon.
  • The nylon backpack is durable, spacious, and small enough to fit into my hand when condensed into its built-in carrying case.
  • The 35-liter backpacks come in five colors, and they each cost just $17.

I may not be the queen of international travel, but I am basically royalty when it comes to making split-second travel decisions and jumping on a last minute flight. More often than not, these instantaneous adventures come at a steep cost, leaving little to no room for annoying charges like seat upgrades or bag fees.

Part of the issue of limited planning time is the lack of thought put into packing appropriately. Most airlines charge customers extra if they exceed the 50-pound weight limit on bags, and my inability to place “just the necessities” into my suitcase have caused me to fall victim to a fee on one too many occasions.

Since the fall of 2017, I haven’t incurred a single overweight fee thanks to an Amazon purchase that I now couldn’t live without: the Gonex backpack ($17).

Packable bags have been popular for years, but rarely can you find quality backpacks for a decent price. For less than $20, you can get this travel wizard— used by everyone from daily commuters to avid hikers — to keep as a backup for suitcase overflow or to use as your main travel bag.

I purchased mine prior to my cross-country move upon recognizing that I had accumulated way more stuff than I thought was humanly possible. Based on customer reviews, I hoped it would be a good way to carry a few extra trinkets on board without having to pay for an additional bag. Its real value arose when my suitcase weighed three pounds over and I was faced with the decision to pay the overcharge fee, ditch my not-so-important objects, or find another place to shove them. The mostly-packed backpack was able to fit that extra three pounds and nearly saved me from my travel turmoil.

Amazon Gonex travel backpack review

The outright volume of the bag is an obvious attraction, but the quality of the material holding it together is even more of a reason to make this your next Amazon buy. It has been tossed around and shoved in the overhead compartment a minimum of 30 times and I have yet to see any wear on the nylon exterior. If a tear does happen, Gonex has a 12-month warranty to ensure that you won’t be left hanging.

The mesh shoulder straps make wearing the bag surprisingly comfortable no matter how much you pack in the multi-compartment carryall. I take full advantage of the front strap so that my back doesn't feel the pain that comes with an overweight load. I may look like an exploration guru while trekking through the airport like this, but at least I'm not uncomfortable.

When I’m not carrying the Gonex bag as my main backpack during travel, I still keep it folded up in my purse for the occasional overpacking situation. The front pocket acts as a case and the entire backpack can be rolled into a pouch small enough to fit into my hand. In other words, I could fit a bag in my bag without notice  — a nifty draw if you ask me.

Sometimes, the outer zipper will get stuck on the material when opening or closing the backpack, but with a little jiggle, the zipper releases without much hassle. This small issue is far outweighed by the number of great qualities the backpack has.

The fact that it comes in five colors and costs only $16.99 means that it can work for nearly everybody, and if you haven’t gathered this by now, I would recommend the Gonex bag to anyone looking for a lightweight option for traveling or commuting purposes.

Buy the Gonex Packable Travel Backpack for $16.99 on Amazon.

I visited the Chanel store in SoHo the day after Karl Lagerfeld died, and it was clear why the brand has been an icon for nearly 100 years

CHANEL SoHo

  • Renowned fashion icon Karl Lagerfeld died on Tuesday, February 19 at the age of 85.
  • Lagerfeld was well known for his role as the creative director of both Chanel and Fendi luxury brands.
  • One day after his death, I visited the Chanel storefront in SoHo to see if they had any sort of tribute set up for the fashion icon.
  • The store's artful yet classic layout and blend of both historic and trendy pieces contributed to its feel of timeless luxury.

At his time of death, Karl Lagerfeld had worked with the Chanel brand for 36 years.

The Chanel company was founded by Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel in 1910, but Lagerfeld, who joined the company 1983 and had a wide impact on the fashion industry at large, is credited with modernizing the failing brand and carrying it into the 21st century.

On a snowy Wednesday, I took the train uptown to SoHo’s Chanel store. The SoHo location is one of three Chanel boutiques in Manhattan, alongside Madison Avenue and the recently unveiled 57th Street location. I was curious to see if the store would have any kind of tribute displayed for the late fashion icon and to get a sense of how the store felt in person.

Overall, the store’s variety of high-end products and thoughtful layout contributed to its overall feel of luxury. I found that inventory was displayed, not just as products for browsing, but rather as pieces of art.

Here's what the SoHo Chanel store looks like.

Amazon decided to shut down HQ2 in New York but advertisers see no sign of the e-commerce giant slowing down its attack on Madison Avenue

jeff bezos amazon ceo

  • Amazon won't move forward with its plan to build a campus in Long Island City, but that change doesn't seem to have impacted Amazon's advertising expansion plans.
  • Amazon is hiring for 867 roles in New York, with 117 positions in sales and advertising, and agencies say they're hearing more and more from the e-commerce giant.
  • Amazon also recently moved to a bigger office in the Hudson Yards neighborhood, indicating that it plans to continue hiring.

Amazon's decision to pull the plug on its high-profile HQ2 project for New York City likely won't affect one bright area of the company's growth: advertising.

Last week, Amazon said that it planned to stop its plan to build a new headquarters in Long Island City, Queens, that would have added up to 25,000 jobs to the city, mostly in engineering and technical roles. While the Queens project is scraped, Amazon's ramp-up of its advertising business shows no signs of slowing down in Manhattan, according to agencies.

An Amazon spokesperson pointed to its blog post, saying that the company has 5,000 employees in Manhattan, Brooklyn and Staten Island and plans to continue growing its team.

Amazon's plan to build out its New York-based advertising team predates HQ2. In 2017, Amazon expanded its Manhattan office and promised to bring 2,000 roles to the city, mostly in advertising. Since then, the ad team has outgrown its office space in a building close to the Empire State Building and expanded into a 360,000-square-foot office in the Hudson Yards neighborhood.

According to Amazon's job listings on its website, the company is hiring for 867 roles in New York, 117 of which are in sales and advertising-related roles.

While Amazon's advertising office in New York is in Manhattan, some staffers could have worked out of Long Island City, which would have been a tough sell to advertisers who have most of their meetings in Manhattan, said David Tucker, head of strategy at media agency SwellShark.

"Asking agencies and clients to go to a different borough probably would have meant less likelihood to visit," he said. "There's a reason why Facebook and Google have all these showcases in Manhattan."

Amazon is running house ads through its own programmatic, demand-side platform (called DSP) that are targeted at people in New York to advertise that it's hiring in the area, said Joshua Kreitzer, founder and CEO of Channel Bakers, an Amazon-focused ad agency.

"The mindset is 'Sure, Queens didn't work out' but within Manhattan, it's still very relevant for them to be there because of all the brand advertising teams that exist in the city," he said.

Amazon's ad team is taking a page from Facebook's playbook

Facebook, Google, Pinterest, Snap and Twitter all have Manhattan offices that they use to get face time with agencies and brands and often use the spaces to show off their newest projects to advertisers. As Amazon has grown its New York office, agencies say that they're hearing from the company more and that it's pitching ad formats aimed at performance marketers and, increasingly, brand-focused marketers.

Agencies said proximity to Amazon's offices doesn't influence how much they spend on advertising.

"When you have more face-to-face meetings, that obviously helps build a relationship with the agency and client," said Jeff Malmad, executive director and lead of Shop+ at Mindshare North America. "But at the end of the day, we're still asking the same questions, we're still bringing forward the same requirements and KPIs for partners and budgets, whether you're in New York or in Seattle."

Malmad added that Amazon is increasingly building its sales teams to serve specific clients and verticals, as Facebook has long done with bigger advertisers. Platforms' biggest ad spenders get dedicated sales reps who give them early access to new products.

"I have definitely seen a greater emphasis and growth from Amazon in regards to client-centric teams in New York," Malmad said. "The benefit to having an Amazon team that's dedicated to your client specifically is that there's more focus on driving business outcomes for brands and agency partners, which is obviously the end goal."
