  • Selma Blair donned a pink and mint color block dress complete with cape at the Vanity Fair Oscars after-party on Sunday night.
  • She also shouted out her custom cane complete with a pink diamond.
  • This was her first public appearance following announcing her multiple-sclerosis diagnosis in October.

Actress Selma Blair walked the red carpet during Vanity Fair's Oscar after-party Sunday, which marked her first public appearance since revealing she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS).

Dressed in a black, mint green, powder blue, and pink gown, the "Legally Blonde" star turned heads with her flowing, color block dress complete with flowing cape. She also walked with a custom black cane which she posted about on her Instagram, saying it was monogrammed and included a real pink diamond.

"This is love 💓. @tombachik customizing my cane with my monogram and a real pink #diamond. How did I get so lucky? I wanted a special cane for #vanityfair dinner. So... @lyon_hearted went out and found patent leather and @bic_owen and he stitched it on. Hours of love put in," a portion of her caption read.

The 'Cruel Intentions' star was diagnosed with MS on August 16

The 46-year-old opened up about her diagnosis in October via an Instagram post.

"I am disabled. I fall sometimes. I drop things," she wrote. "My memory is foggy. And my left side is asking for directions from a broken gps. But we are doing it. And I laugh and I don't know exactly what I will do precisely but I will do my best."

The National Multiple Sclerosis Society defines MS as "an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system that disrupts the flow of information within the brain, and between the brain and body." According to the Harvard NeuroDiscovery Center, more than 400,000 Americans are living with the disease, which commonly affects young adults from 20 to 40 years of age.

Late Sunday night, Blair tweeted about her experience walking the carpet, calling it a "glorious feeling" after thanking Vanity Fair for capturing a stunning image of her.

Ukrainian comedian Volodymyr Zelenskiy, who played the nation's president in a popular TV series, and is running for president in next month's election, is photographed on the set of a movie, in Kiev, Ukraine.

  • With five weeks to go until Ukraine's March 31 presidential election, actor Volodymyr Zelensky is leading the polls.
  • Zelensky, 41, stars in the popular TV show, "Servant of the People," in which he plays a teacher who is elected president of Ukraine.
  • While Zelensky is a lawyer and a businessman, he has no actual political experience.
  • He describes himself as "very liberal," and wants tackle corruption and speak directly with Putin about the war in Eastern Ukraine.

A comedian who plays Ukraine's president on TV is learning the polls in the country's presidential race.

Volodymyr Zelensky, 41, stars in the popular TV show, "Servant of the People," in which he plays a history teacher who is elected president after his anti-corruption run goes viral.

And now, with five weeks to go until Ukraine's March 31 presidential election, Zelensky is the frontrunner, despite not having any actual political experience.

He describes himself as "very liberal," and Bloomberg reports that he launched his a populist campaign on January 1, to coincide with the president's New Year’s address.

A recent poll suggests that Zelensky has more support than other candidates, including incumbent, Petro Poroshenko, and former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko.

The nationwide poll showing Zelensky lending the presidential race surveyed 2,000 people and was conducted in early February by Ukraine’s Razumkov Center.

It showed 17.5% would vote for Zelensky, 13.1% for Poroshenko, and 11.5% for Tymoshenko.

Aside from being an actor and comedian, Zelensky is a lawyer and businessman.

His approach to campaigning is unique. He doesn't hold rallies, according to NBC News, and instead sells tickets to comedy gigs in which he parodies his competition. He also uses Facebook and YouTube to share behind-the-scenes videos.

If he is elected as president, Zelensky will have to face ongoing tensions with Russia, which annexed Crimea in 2014, as well as a crumbling economy and widespread corruption.

Zelensky has said he wants to tackle corruption and speak directly with Putin about the war in Eastern Ukraine.

When asked in December if he could imagine negotiating with President Donald Trump in the future, Zelensky was unfazed.

"We are both from he same industry after all," he joked.

After he announced his presidential run, Zelensky faced criticism from Poroshenko's supporters, who called him a "clown" and accused him of devaluing the presidency, Bloomberg reported.

Others accused him of being a puppet for oligarch Ihor Kolomoisky, whose lawyers have denied the claims.

The 4 most common types of personalized retail emails

$
0

Sailthru no.8 2019

Many retailers and e-commerce brands still follow a campaign-centric marketing messaging strategy, segmenting consumers into large groups and treating them the same. But they shouldn’t.

According to the Data & Marketing Association, 77% of email ROI is generated from targeted, triggered messages. And why wouldn’t it be? In many cases, triggered messaging is one of the first marketing initiatives that leverages true one-to-one personalization. They’re direct reactions to customers’ specific behaviors, which provide clues about how they’re feeling. Artificial intelligence has enabled marketers to tap into that, evolving their tactics from foundational to more sophisticated with personalization, predictive analytics, and other forms of machine learning.

Often consisting of flows — or customer journeys — triggered messages give every retailer the opportunity to reduce churn and acquire customers more cost-effectively, while increasing list size, email revenue, and repeat purchases. Here’s a breakdown of the four of the most common types

1. Welcome

If a customer signed up for your email or downloaded your app, they’re sending you a message: They want to hear from you. With a strong welcome series, you can let them know they’ve made the right choice. These messages also give you the opportunity to emphasize brand values and set expectations, while also highlighting those items known to convert browsers to buyers. Along those lines, many retailers include an incentive to ensure that conversion happens quickly, while their initial interest is still high.

2. Abandonment

When a customer abandons an online shopping cart, or even a browsing session, they’ve already provided the retailer with a really important bit of information: They’re interested. It’s a brand’s job to intercept them and nudge them along, albeit gently. The key is to make the purchase as painless as possible, such as deep linking right to the customer’s cart, for example. We’d also recommend refreshing their memories by including the product name in the subject line. Still abandoned? Try incentivizing the sale with a discount.

3. Post-purchase

The good news is that your customer made a purchase. The almost-as-good news is that a post-purchase stream is a great way to engage them, encouraging them to become a repeat customer. First, thank them for their purchase. That’s also a great time to introduce them to your loyalty program, where nearly every brand’s most loyal customers live. And just as there’s a cadence to your messaging, there’s a cadence to most customers’ buying patterns. Use your knowledge about their preferences to encourage that next purchase at just the right time.

4. Re-engagement

Everything is going great. The customer opened your emails and clicked your links… until they didn’t. Luckily, there are plenty of great re-engagement message options to win them back. Remind the customer what they’ve been missing and why they liked your brand so much in the first place. And to make sure you’re not over-messaging, we recommend a preference center that allows people to choose their own frequency and content. Whichever strategy you choose, be sure to automate the timing to reach people when there’s still time to improve engagement.

This is just a teaser, featuring some of the foundational tactics. For more sophisticated strategies, download The Ultimate Playbook to Triggered Messaging for Retail Marketers: Best Practices for Increasing Revenue with Email and Multichannel Triggers.

Warren Buffett says he's interested in buying more Apple — if it were cheaper

  • Warren Buffett said in a Monday interview that he would be buying more Apple shares if the stock were "cheaper."
  • He added that he has "never sold a share" of Apple despite the fact that Berkshire Hathaway trimmed its stake in the fourth quarter.
  • Buffett also said in May that the firm would "love to see Apple go down in price" so he could buy more.

Berkshire Hathaway CEO and acclaimed investor Warren Buffett says he'd be buying more Apple shares if it were "cheaper."

"If it were cheaper, we'd be buying it," Buffett said in a Monday morning interview with CNBC's Becky Quick, co-host of Squawk Box. "We aren't buying it here."

He also said that despite the fact that Berkshire Hathaway trimmed its Apple stake in the fourth quarter, he has "never sold a share." Rather, he says it was a manager at the firm who had sold Apple shares to put toward a new investment. Berkshire Hathaway currently owns a 5.4% stake in Apple, valued at around $44.7 billion.

Apple stock is currently trading at $175.34, down from the $207.05 price it hit in August when it became the first US company to be worth $1 trillion on the public markets.

The interview comes days after Buffett published his annual letter to shareholders on February 23, in which he discussed topics such as his plan to repurchase the company's own stock, among other items.

It's not the first time the 88-year-old investor has expressed interest in adding to his Apple holdings if the company's price were to drop. "From our standpoint we would love to see Apple go down in price,"Buffett said in May during his annual shareholders meeting. "We very much approve of them repurchasing shares."

In the first quarter of 2018, Berkshire Hathaway added 75 million shares to the 165.3 million shares it owned at the end of 2017, as CNBC reported last May.

"Nobody buys a farm based on whether they think it's going to rain next year or not," he said to CNBC at the time. "They buy it because they think it's a good investment over 10 or 20 years."

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is currently en route to Hanoi, Vietnam, for his second meeting with US President Donald Trump.

Instead of taking a plane, he's opted to take his family's personal armored train from North Korea. The trip from Pyongyang to Hanoi, which passes through eastern and southern China, is some 2,000 miles long and will take at least three-and-a-half days.

The last time Kim Jong Un took his train outside the country was to Beijing, where he spent his 35th birthday with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

North Korean TV showed him walking along a red carpet to board the train, and waving to dozens of government officials and army officers who lined up to send him off.

EXCLUSIVE CONSUMER SURVEY DATA: Samsung's foldable phone is poised to steal Apple customers

The following is an excerpt from a Business Insider Intelligence research briefing delivered exclusively to PREMIUM subscribers. To learn more and subscribe, please click here.

Samsung’s newly announced foldable phone could attract iPhone users, according to an informal survey of Business Insider readers from Business Insider Intelligence. For context, the $1,980 Galaxy Fold, which launches on April 26, has a tablet-sized screen that can be folded to the size and shape of a typical smartphone.

Most Business Insider Readers Are Interested in Purchasing a Foldable Phone

  • The majority of consumers are interested in the new form factor. Almost 8 in 10 (76%) respondents stated they would be interested in having their next smartphone be a foldable phone.
  • These figures stand out even more among Samsung Galaxy owners. Nearly 90% of Galaxy owners stated that they're interested in having a foldable phone be their next smartphone, while 43% said that they're extremely interested in the device.

Early interest among these Business Insider respondents, who are typically young and tech-savvy, is a promising sign that foldable phones will become the next step in the smartphone's evolution, especially given all the benefits it comes with. For example, foldable phones should let users comfortably carry a device with a large screen, provide a better experience for various activities, like video viewing, and enable users to multitask and enhance productivity.

Unfortunately for Apple, it's trailing behind Samsung in the race to launch a foldable phone, which could cost it customers. Apple has yet to confirm plans to launch a foldable phone and reports suggest it won't do so until at least late 2020. While Apple has historically leaned on its brand loyalty to launch new and innovative hardware after its competitors without significant losses, this strategy may not pay off this time around.

Samsung Galaxy Fold

Over two-thirds (68%) of iPhone owners said that they're interested in a foldable phone as their next smartphone. And without a foldable iPhone variant on the market, interested iOS users might look to the Android ecosystem, which will be populated with foldable phones. If this were to occur, it would be detrimental to Apple's bottom line, especially since the iPhone makes up the bulk (62%) of Apple's revenue.

However, Samsung must stay aggressive by addressing its foldable phone's major flaw — price point. Although consumers across both Android and iOS ecosystems are highly interested, the Galaxy Fold's starting price point of $1,980 is likely unattainable for most consumers. Samsung will need to either offer generous discounts to the Galaxy Fold or launch a second-generation foldable phone in the next year, which would still beat Apple's timeline, at a more palatable consumer price point to widen the addressable market.

30 genius ways to repurpose everyday items you have in your home

$

hanging pictures frames

  • Everyday items around your home that you no longer use can be repurposed into something new.
  • You can turn your empty toilet paper rolls into storage containers and even gift boxes.
  • Egg cartons can become plant holders, paint cups, and even string lights.

As Marie Kondo's cleaning revolution continues to sweep the country, many are throwing away items they haven't used in years. But not everything that is garbage belongs in the trash

In fact, everyday items around your house may no longer be useful but when repurposed, recycled, and reused, they can serve a whole new function.

Instead of throwing away these eight household items, here are some ways to repurpose them.

Before you throw away your empty egg cartons, consider these options for reusing them.

1. Egg cartons are a great organizational tool. You use them to store your small jewelry, office supplies, screws, and even cooking spices.

2. You can also use them as small pots to help seeds sprout.

3. If you're an artist or love arts and crafts with kids, egg cartons act as great paint cups.

4. If you're really crafty, you can turn your egg cartons into eye-catching flower lights

If you end up losing a sock in the laundry, don't throw the other one away — there are so many other uses for it.

1. Most socks can fit right over your hand and can be used as a simple duster to help clean your home.

2. A lonely sock can hold loose, small items that you have laying around. For instance, game boards usually have a ton of small pieces that can easily get lost. Placing them in a sock keeps them in one place.

3. If you're moving, put your breakables in the lonesome socks. They act as great protectors.

4. Socks can also be great phone protectors and can even act as a carrying case.

5. The sock can also come in handy if you need an ice or warm pack. Just place ice inside and you can easily cool aching muscles. Putting warm rice inside the sock and placing it on pain points on your body can also be soothing.

Those empty toilet paper and paper towel rolls aren't garbage. In fact, they can come in handy all over your house.

1. You can organize all your loose cords by wrapping them in toilet paper rolls. Also, use the cardboard as a label so you know exactly what that cord is for in the future.

2. If you stuff grocery bags into a paper towel roll, then you can free up a ton of space and can grab a single bag at ease.

3. You can even turn your toilet paper rolls into cute gift boxes by filling them with goodies and folding the sides in to create flaps.

4. If you want to be environmentally friendly, cover the rolls in peanut butter and then roll them in bird seeds. It's a simple and cheap way to make a bird feeder.

The CEO of China's largest electric car company compares Tesla to high fashion — and says his company is the 'girl next door' (TSLA, NIO)

NIO CEO 60 Minutes CBS

  • CBS's 60 Minutes interviewed NIO founder and CEO William Li in a new segment that aired Sunday night.
  • Li didn't deny calling his car a "Tesla killer" and compared Elon Musk's competitor to high fashion clothing.
  • "They may be beautiful, but you can’t wear them every day," he told correspondent Holly Williams.

As Tesla builds its second "gigafactory" in Shanghai, its biggest domestic competitor in the country is ready to play hardball.

Nio, an $8 billion electric car maker that began trading on the New York Stock Exchange last year, is rapidly scaling up throughout China — and thinks it can keep Tesla at bay.

In a 60 Minutes interview that aired Sunday, founder and CEO William Li — who didn't deny calling his company a "Tesla killer"— compared Tesla's vehicles to high-fashion clothing.

"It’s like the clothes fashion models wear on the catwalk," he said in Chinese of Tesla's cars. "It’s not the same "They may be beautiful, but you can’t wear them every day."

The comparison continued to include supermodels.

"So Tesla is the supermodel and you’re the girl next door?" asked correspondent Holly Williams. "Yeah," Li replied.

To be sure, Nio produced just 10,000 cars last year. While Tesla does not disclose unit sales in China, it brought in $1.75 billion worth of revenue from the country in 2019, or about 8% of its global total. Eight percent of Tesla's global deliveries works out to nearly 20,000, assuming the same proportion of revenue and deliveries.

Michael Dunne, an auto analyst in China interviewed as part of the segment, says there could be room for both companies to exist.

"There's plenty of market here to allow Tesla to play and Nio to play," he said, adding that time could be running out for the US to catch up to China's increasing lead on producing electric vehicles.

"It's not too late," Dunne said when asked about the US' relatively slow rate of adoption. But, he warned, "if we wait to 2025, China will be making 5 million a year, and if we're still making a half a million. Now all of the technology and design engineering is concentrated in China. How do you catch up with that?"

A top executive at Amazon, Berkshire Hathaway, and JPMorgan's health venture reveals the 6 biggest problems with US healthcare (AMZN, BRK, JPM)

employee healthcare costs bezos buffett dimon 4x3

  • Amazon, Berkshire Hathaway, and JPMorgan are on the hunt for solutions to some of the most perplexing healthcare problems.
  • The chief operating officer of their health venture, Jack Stoddard, recently outlined six big problems the venture's founders asked the team to look into.
  • In unsealed testimony, Stoddard said that the venture will spend 2019 deploying tests of programs through partnerships with other companies.

When Amazon, Berkshire Hathaway, and JPMorgan said in January 2018 that they planned to create a joint health venture, their vision was broad enough to send shockwaves through the entire $3.6 trillion industry.

The three employers oversee healthcare for about 1 million people, and spend $4 billion a year on it. When they joined forces, they said that the venture would be aimed at lowering healthcare costs and improving care for their workers.

Health insurers and members of the pharmaceutical supply chain were hit hard by the announcement based on worries that their businesses might be targeted by the three companies.

Now, we're getting a clearer idea of what the still-unnamed health venture's approach might be.

In a recently unsealed deposition as part of a lawsuit, the venture's chief operating officer, Jack Stoddard, outlined some of the areas the venture's focusing on, when asked about what details he told a prospective hire about the future of the company.

Read more:Here's why the biggest healthcare company in the US is wary of Amazon, Berkshire Hathaway, and JPMorgan's plans to disrupt healthcare

In particular, he spelled out six problems the venture's been asked by its founders to get to the bottom of:

Here are the questions the venture's starting with

  • Why is getting primary care a challenge?
  • Why is it hard to understand healthcare costs?
  • Why is health insurance so complicated?
  • Why is there a disparity between how much employers spend on healthcare and the experience their employees have using it?
  • Why are employees frustrated?
  • Why do healthcare costs keep going up?

"These are big problems that our founders have asked us to look at," Stoddard said.

Stoddard's remarks were included in unsealed testimony coming from a lawsuit between healthcare giant Optum and a former employee who went to work for the new venture. The testimony was unsealed after a motion brought by the parent companies of Stat News and The Wall Street Journal.

To be sure, the problems Stoddard outlined have complex answers, and it still remains to be seen how the venture will approach them.

Stoddard said that to start, 2019 will be focused on building the team, doing research, and deploying tests of programs through partnerships with other companies. For example, one of the first tests the venture might run is to simplify health benefits for a select group of workers. The test could knock out some of the complexity that exists in a traditional health plan, offer easier ways to get care, or make drugs prescribed to treat chronic conditions less expensive, he said.

If the tests are successful, JPMorgan, Berkshire Hathaway, and Amazon could expand them to more of their workers.

The lawsuit, filed on January 16, came a day before David Smith, a former senior executive at Optum, was scheduled to start working at the joint venture as its director of product strategy and research. The complaint said that by joining the health venture, Smith is in breach of contract and could reveal Optum's trade secrets. Optum is a unit of UnitedHealth Group.

On Friday, a judge in Massachusetts ruled that Smith could continue working at the health venture while the case goes to arbitration.

"We are committed to protecting our confidential information and will aggressively do so in arbitration," Optum spokesman Matt Stearns said in a statement Friday. A representative of the health venture declined to comment on the ruling.

The 2019 Oscars brought a lot of fashion that people can't stop talking about, but the heaviest gown of the night might just belong to Glenn Close. The actress, nominated for best actress in "The Wife,"told Ryan Seacrest on the red carpet that her gold gown weighed 42 pounds, though, according to the designer's website, the dress weighed 50 pounds

In an interview with The Cut, Close admitted that the gown "intimidated" her, but that she didn't do anything ahead of time to prepare to wear it.

Carolina Herrera's website shared an in-depth look at Close's gown, which they said was the "most intricate piece the House has ever created."

Each of the 3 million (though on the red carpet, Close said it was 4 million) custom glass bugle beads were individually stitched into the gown in India, and it required 40 artisans to create. The gown was then flown to New York on two separate flights.

The gown was inspired by Close's personal style and even her dog got in on the process of dressing her for the Oscars.

"Glenn's affinity for suits and structured pieces led the design process, with the vision to translate similar qualities of strength into a gown," wrote Herrera's site. "She loved the idea of attending the Oscars dressed in 'Oscars gold,' as did her dog Pip who playfully scampered around during fittings."

Sen. Doug Jones, D Ala., waits to speak at the dedication for the United States Courthouse for the Southern District of Alabama in Mobile, Alabama, in September 2018.

  • Alabama Sen. Doug Jones said Hoda Muthana should be allowed to return to the US from Syria and face the criminal justice system.
  • Muthana, 24, left Alabama when she was 19 to join ISIS in Syria, and now wants to return to the US with her 18-month-old son.
  • President Donald Trump and Secretary of State vowed last week to keep Muthana out of the US.
  • Jones said Muthana should "absolutely be brought to justice for inciting violence against Americans."

Alabama Sen. Doug Jones said an American woman who went to Syria to join ISIS four years ago should be allowed back into the US to face the criminal justice system.

Hoda Muthana, 24, and her 18-month-old son fled ISIS earlier this year and are living in the al-Hawl refugee camp in northeast Syria. She came forward earlier this month to ask to return to the US.

President Donald Trump and Secretary of State vowed last week to keep Muthana out of the United States. Jones, a Democrat, contrasted those statements on Sunday, saying Muthana should be "brought to justice."

"While I certainly understand the initial reaction to prohibit Hoda Muthana from coming back to the United States, I am concerned that allowing anyone who has committed crimes against the people of this country to remain beyond the reach of our justice system is the wrong approach and sends the wrong message," Jones said in a statement to AL.com.

"My view is that she should absolutely be brought to justice for inciting violence against Americans," he added. "Doing so would send a powerful message that any American who lends support to a terrorist organization will be pursued to the fullest extent of the law."

Muthana's father, Ahmed Ali Muthana, filed a lawsuit last week arguing that his daughter and her son should be allowed to return to the US and she should be recognized as a citizen.

In the lawsuit, Muthana’s father asked that he be allowed to send his daughter money to return home without being charged for supporting a terrorist.

"While I can’t speak to the facts about Muthana’s citizenship status, as a former US Attorney I have full faith in our justice system to hold her accountable for her actions if she were to return to the United States," Jones said in his statement to AL.com.

Muthana left Alabama when she was 19 to join ISIS in Syria in November 2014.

She was radicalized online, according to a 2015 BuzzFeed report, and started a popular Twitter account, where she made violent calls to action from Syria.

One tweet read: "Go on drive bys, and spill all of their blood, or rent a big truck and drive all over them. Veterans, Patriots, Memorial, etc day … Kill them."

A Chinese scientist claims to have genetically-engineered babies — here's what editing DNA means

$

  • A Chinese scientist claims to have genetically-engineered human babies with the revolutionary technique known as CRISPR.
  • If his claims are verified, the infants will be first ever babies with DNA that's been edited in a lab, or so-called CRISPR babies.
  • Editing human DNA in this way could save lives, but many researchers fear unintended consequences.

Following is a transcript of the video.

In 2011, scientists created glow-in-the-dark cats. The researchers took a gene from a glowing jellyfish and inserted it into the unfertilized eggs of house cats. It was a neat trick, but they had a bigger goal in mind. They also made the cats more likely to be resistant to a feline form of AIDS by, again, manipulating their DNA. And cats aren't that different than humans. In fact, we share around 90 percent of our DNA with them.

So why can't we engineer humans in the same way?  Well, we can — engineer ourselves to be resistant to life-threatening illnesses, that is. In fact, one scientist claims that he's genetically engineered two babies using a revolutionary tool called CRISPR. But what exactly is a CRISPR baby, anyway?

Would you like to be six feet tall? Or never bald? The secret to traits like these lies in the six billion letters of your genetic code. But there can be something else in there as well. Mutations. Genetic mutations are linked to at least 6,000 medical conditions, from sickle cell anemia to Huntington's disease. But what if you could make those mutations simply disappear? That's where the gene-editing tool CRISPR comes in.

CRISPR is made from specialized proteins and other compounds found in certain bacteria. Normally, these proteins protect the bacteria by destroying enemy invaders like viruses, but the inventors of CRISPR figured out how to turn those proteins against genetic mutations and other genes linked to disease.

First, they give the proteins coordinates of the wanted gene. Then, CRISPR runs a seek-and-destroy function. After that, other molecules are dispatched to repair the gene with new, healthy DNA. And just like that, you can edit the human genome.

But while edits may be quick, their changes can last for centuries. Especially if you're editing the DNA in an embryo. Embryos start out with a single cell that eventually replicates into millions and then trillions more. So, if you alter that initial cell first, you're manipulating the ingredients for every cell that follows later in life, and those same altered cells can be passed on from generation to generation. That's one reason why most experiments on human embryos haven't left the lab.

That is, except for the work of Dr. He Jiankui. He claims to have used CRISPR to target and knock out the CCR5 gene in human embryos, which is linked to HIV infection. And then he did something that shocked the scientific community. He implanted the embryos into several women, one of whom gave birth to genetically modified twins. Resistance to HIV aside, most scientists say that the procedure was too risky.  At least two studies suggest that edited cells might actually trigger cancer. And another found that CRISPR can accidentally take aim at healthy DNA.

So, while CRISPR could make us immune to disease, who knows what else we might get on the side?

  • The 2019 Oscars were held on Sunday night at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, California.
  • Lady Gaga won best original song for co-writing "Shallow" from "A Star Is Born" with Andrew Wyatt, Anthony Rossomando, and Mark Ronson.
  • Gaga's eyeliner and mascara stayed on all night, even after the actress' emotional acceptance speech and intimate performance with Bradley Cooper.
  • The star's longtime makeup artist, Sarah Nicole Tanno, revealed in an Instagram post that she used Marc Jacobs Beauty's $25 Fineliner, a gel eye crayon, in Steel(etto).
  • Tanno also used Marc Jacobs Beauty's $26 Velvet Epic Lash Primer and $26 Velvet Noir Major Volume Mascara.

It was a monumental night for Lady Gaga at the 2019 Oscars on Sunday.

The singer won best original song for "Shallow" from "A Star Is Born," along with co-writers Andrew Wyatt, Anthony Rossomando, and Mark Ronson. She gave an emotional acceptance speech in which she encouraged viewers to fight for their dreams. And she delivered an intimate performance of "Shallow" with "A Star Is Born" co-star Bradley Cooper that garnered not one, but two standing ovations

Throughout it all, Gaga's dewy makeup look stayed put — including, even, her eyeliner and mascara. Luckily, for anyone wondering what products she used, the actress' longtime makeup artist, Sarah Nicole Tanno, shared a complete breakdown on Instagram.

Gaga's makeup artist aimed to create a 'soft' and 'fresh' look

In an Instagram post, Tanno said she didn't want Gaga's makeup to "distract from [the singer's] special moment."

First, the makeup artist prepped the actress' skin with Marc Jacobs Beauty's $44 Under(cover) Perfecting Coconut Face Primer. According to Tanno, the primer helped her use less foundation so she wouldn't cover up Gaga's "beautiful natural tan" too much.

Tanno then applied Marc Jacobs Beauty's $46 Shameless Youthful-Look 24-Hour Foundation to the center of the singer's face to "even out" her complexion.

The makeup artist also used two new products by Marc Jacobs Beauty that will hit shelves in May 2019: the $32 Accomplice Concealer & Touch-Up Stick and $49 Accomplice Instant Blurring Beauty Powder. According to Tanno, the powder "looks amazing with flash photography."

The singer's eyelashes were coated with both a primer and mascara

Tanno said she wanted Gaga's eye makeup to look "simple and classic." She first used the neutral shades in Marc Jacobs Beauty's $49 Eye-Conic Steeletto Eye-shadow Palette. Then, she lined the singer's eyelids with Marc Jacobs Beauty's $25 Fineliner, a thin gel eye crayon, in Steel(etto).

Finally, she applied Marc Jacobs Beauty's $26 Velvet Epic Lash Primer and $26 Velvet Noir Major Volume Mascara to Gaga's eyelashes.

Tanno completed the whole look by tapping Marc Jacobs Beauty's $30 Le Marc Lip Crème onto the singer's lips — a technique that the makeup artist said allows you to still see the lips' "natural texture"— and brushing Marc Jacobs Beauty's $42 Air Blush Soft Glow Blush Duo in Lush & Libido over her cheeks "for a fresh glow."

Representatives for Sarah Nicole Tanno did not immediately respond to INSIDER's request for comment.

  • The signs that your boss likes you aren't always immediately obvious.
  • Managers may try to avoid appearing like they have staff favorites.
  • You can keep an eye out for subtle clues that your boss thinks you're great.

The signs that your boss likes you can be quite subtle.

But it's crucial to definitively establish that your manager is on your side. Getting along with your boss is a pretty important part of succeeding at work. Your manager likely controls whether or not you get promoted, demoted, or fired, after all. Your job is in their hands.

Some bosses make their appreciation clear. They heap on the praise, give positive and detailed feedback, and make you feel like you're an integral part of the success of the organization.

But not all managers are so open.

It's always good to ask for honest feedback. Before you make inquiries, though, here are a number of signs that your boss probably is pretty impressed with your work:

They give you tough love

Suzanne Bates, CEO of Bates Communications and author of "All the Leader You Can Be," told Business Insider that it can be difficult to figure out whether or not your boss likes you.

"A boss who sees you as promising may give you a lot of feedback, not all of it positive — some of it might be 'tough love' because he or she sees you as someone who can handle it and is ready for more responsibility," she said.

They challenge you

If you're feeling a bit overwhelmed at times, then that might not be a terrible thing.

"The boss will probably give you more than you feel you can handle at times, not because he or she is trying to punish you, but because they want to test you on tough assignments," said Bates.

They share your priorities

"Ask your boss what his or her top priorities are and put up your hand for challenging assignments," said Bates. "Give the boss a chance to see you in action, especially on a project important to him or her, so that they can see what you're made of."

This year proved the Oscars have warmed up to Marvel and Netflix, even though 'Black Panther' and 'Roma' lost best picture

  • "Black Panther" and "Roma" didn't win best picture at the Oscars on Sunday, but they didn't go away empty handed.
  • Both movies won three Oscars, proving the Academy has opened up to Marvel and Netflix in ways it hadn't a few years ago.
  • It was a night of firsts for the Oscars, thanks largely to "Black Panther" and "Roma."

"Black Panther" and "Roma" were two of the most critically acclaimed but contentious movies heading into this year's Oscars on Sunday. Could a Marvel superhero blockbuster and a Netflix foreign-language film break through with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences?

Both movies lost the coveted best picture award to the controversial"Green Book," but they didn't go home empty handed. And those wins could signal that the Oscars are more open to Marvel and Netflix now than they were a few years ago, despite the big win for "Green Book" and the ensuing conversation surrounding it.

Both movies represent the changing Hollywood landscape better than any of the other best picture nominees. "Black Panther" takes place within a cinematic universe of connected movies that other studios have tried to duplicate. It's rare for a movie today to smash the box office if it's not part of a larger franchise, a trend that the Marvel Cinematic Universe embodies.

Alfonso Cuarón's "Roma" is a Netflix movie. The streaming giant has the distinction of being an industry disruptor. It released "Roma" in select theaters ahead of making it available to stream, something it had never done before, and it reportedly spent up to  $20 million on its campaign to win best picture. But many within the film industry were still hesitant to embrace the streamer, including Steven Spielberg, who said about Netflix movies that "once you commit to a television format, you're a TV movie."

And yet, both "Black Panther" and "Roma" won three Oscars, and "Roma" was tied with "The Favourite" as the most nominated movie of the night, showing that they had strong support among voters in the Academy.

"Black Panther" won for costume design, production design, and original score, while "Roma" won for director, foreign-language film, and cinematography. Those wins also weren't surprising to Oscars observers, further solidifying a shifting mindset with the Academy.

A night of firsts for the Oscars

"Black Panther" was the biggest movie in the US of 2018, raking in over $700 million domestically and over $1 billion worldwide. This isn't the first time that the Oscars have embraced a box-office sensation, but it is the first time it's done so for a superhero movie.

"Black Panther" is the first superhero movie to be nominated for best picture, 10 years after "The Dark Knight" was infamously snubbed and the Academy increased the number of nominees the following year. It's raised the bar for the superhero genre, and its success has opened more doors for superhero movies, even if that success will be difficult to replicate in the future

Marvel Studios launched its first real Oscars campaign for "Black Panther," and pulled off its first wins. Ruth Carter and Hannah Beachler became the first black women to win the Oscar for best costume design and best production design for "Black Panther," respectively.

"Roma," meanwhile, helped Netflix break its Oscars curse. The streamer won best documentary feature last year for "Icarus," but has never managed to really break though until this year. On top of "Roma's" 10 nominations, it picked up three nominations for "The Ballad of Buster Scruggs," and two short film nominations (it won best documentary short for "Period. End of Sentence").

Cuarón won the best cinematography Oscar, becoming the first director to win the award for shooting their own movie. "Roma" was the first Mexican film to win the best foreign-language Oscar.

It was a night of firsts for the Oscars, and they can be attributed to Marvel and Netflix. Before "Black Panther" and "Roma," that seemed unthinkable.

HondaJet CEO Fujino

  • The Hondajet Elite is one of the most capable light business jets in the world and one of its most distinctive features is the shape of its nose.
  • According to Honda Aircraft Company CEO Michimasa Fujino, the jet's nose was inspired by a pair of designer high heels by Salvatore Ferragamo.
  • Fujino was not only impressed by the aesthetic beauty of the shoe but also Salvatore Ferragamo's entrepreneurial spirit and his attention to human anatomy in his designs.

The Honda Motor Company is known for making some of the finest cars, motorcycles, and power equipment money can buy.

The Japanese industrial giant officially entered the aviation business when it established the Honda Aircraft Company in 2006.

Honda's first, the HA-420 Hondajet, entered production in 2015. An updated variant, the HondaJet Elite, was introduced in 2018.

The Hondajet Elite is one of the most capable light business jets in the world and one of its most distinctive features is the shape of its nose.

Read more: I flew on Honda's new $5.25 million private jet to see if it's faster, quieter, and more luxurious than before. Here's the verdict.

As the story goes, the shape of the Hondajet's nose was inspired by a pair of designer high heels by Salvatore Ferragamo.

Turns out, it wasn't a tall tale after all.

"Yes, it's kind of true," Honda Aircraft Company CEO Michimasa Fujino said in a recent interview with Business Insider.

Fujino has been working on Honda's aircraft project for three decades now and led the HondaJet's design development.

HondaJet EliteAccording to Fujino, when it came time to design the HondaJet, he had a good idea of how the wings and the control structure should look.

But Fujino took extra care in the design of the plane's nose, drawing inspiration from a variety of sources.

"I'm always looking for something which is very beautiful and especially the fuselage nose shape which is very critical to give an impression like the front grille of an automobile," he told us during a recent trip to Honda Aircraft headquarters in Greensboro, North Carolina. "So the nose shape is very critical for first impressions."

As the story goes, Fujino's encounter with the Ferragamo shoe took place while his wife was shopping at an airport duty-free shop during a vacation in Hawaii.

"During that time I was looking for many things, I noticed a pair of Ferragamo high heels. That is shape was very beautiful to me," he said.

Read more: I flew on Honda's $4.9 million private jet, and it's an absolute game-changer.

Fujino became even more impressed with the design after researching the history of the shoe's designer Salvatore Ferragamo.

The Honda Aircraft boss said was highly impressed by Ferragamo's entrepreneurial past along with the legendary's designer's attention to the ergonomics associated with human anatomy in his designs.

According to Fujino, the Ferragamo shape represented a merger of functionality, ergonomics, aerodynamics, and technology.

"That was a hint for me to start to design this nose shape," he said.

Naturally, the nose of the HondaJet wasn't completely lifted from the shoes. Fujino reiterated that the current nose design, while inspired by the designer high heels, was finely tuned through years of aerodynamic testing and development.

Lady Gaga and Madonna appeared to put their differences aside after the Oscars ceremony on Sunday night.

Following her win for best original song at the 2019 Oscars, Gaga attended "The Party," a famed after-party hosted by Madonna and the entertainment mogul Guy Oseary.

In a photo posted by Time magazine's official Instagram account, Gaga and Madonna were embracing, with the former grinning widely.

The 91st Academy Awards were filled with historic firsts and emotional moments, from @blackpanther‘s Ruth E. While there's typically "a strict ban on social media posts" at the party, as Time noted, the magazine partnered with artist and photographer JR in order to capture the stars in attendance.

Pop culture Twitter account Pop Crave was also able to obtain video of Gaga and Madonna posing closely together.

The photo and video appear to offer evidence that the two women have squashed their longtime feud.

Just two months ago, Madonna appeared to mock Gaga, apparently claiming that Gaga had appropriated a Madonna quote to create a phrase she repeatedly used during the "A Star Is Born" press tour.

Indeed, Madonna has repeatedly accused Gaga of stealing aspects of her style and sound — particularly in regards to Gaga's hit song "Born This Way," which Madonna has called "reductive."

For her part, Gaga has said it's "moronic" to compare "Born This Way" to Madonna's "Express Yourself," but has also praised Madonna's role in pop music.

"As a punk-rocker from New York, I've basically been hoping that I would become so good that one day I would piss off Madonna,"Gaga said in 2013.
