12 scary takeaways from the climate report the Trump administration dropped on Black Friday — and one reason for hope

camp fire smoke on the road

On Black Friday, as many Americans were shopping or spending time with family, the Trump administration published a major report on climate change.

The findings are dire.

Average temperatures could rise by up to 11 degrees Fahrenheit by the end of the century in a worst-case scenario. We could see as much as 6 feet of sea-level rise. And the price tag associated with deaths from extreme temperatures could reach $140 billion if we continue business-as-usual.

The study, called the "National Climate Assessment," is the fourth in an ongoing series mandated by a 1990 law. It looks at how climate change is affecting the US now and what the country might look like by the end of the century. Hundreds of scientists and other experts from academia, government, nonprofits, and the private sector help write and review it, a process that takes years.

Thanks to advances in climate science, this latest version gets specific about how various regions of the US will be impacted differently, which economic sectors will take the hardest hit, and how healthcare costs will rise as diseases spread and air quality worsens.

Here are the most important and scary takeaways from the report.

Yes, humans are responsible for the planet's changing climate. No hoaxes here.

Although this is far from new information, the report reiterates that the evidence of human-caused climate change is overwhelming.

“The unambiguous long-term warming trend in global average temperature over the last century cannot be explained by natural factors alone. Greenhouse-gas emissions from human activities are the only factors that can account for the observed warming," it says.

The US's average temperature has already risen about 1.8 degrees Fahrenheit since 1900. An additional 2.5 degrees is inevitable by 2050, and temperatures could rise as much as 11 degrees by 2100 if we continue business-as-usual.

Already, 16 of the last 17 years have been the warmest on record, globally.

By 2100, the southwest region of the US could see 45 more days per year above 90 degrees Fahrenheit.

That heat is fatal.

Heat waves are responsible for more deaths in the US every year than the combined effects of hurricanes, lightning, tornadoes, earthquakes, and floods.

By the end of the century, extreme hot and extreme cold temperatures in 49 US cities are projected to result in more than 9,000 additional premature deaths per year (if emissions continue to stay high).

Some of the largest increases in heat-related mortality would occur in the Northeast — that region could see an additional 50-100 heat-related deaths annually per million people by 2050.

The price tag associated with deaths from extreme temperatures could be up to $140 billion in 2090, the report calculates.

Trump's pushback against China is catching on globally as European negotiator declares an end to the region's 'naivety'

Donald Trump China

  • The European Union says it is ready to work together on a tough new system to scrutinize investment out of China.
  • Now there's an end to what one official called "European naivety"— the pushback against China has expanded globally in 2018.
  • Europe, with almost twice as much Chinese investment as the United States, is playing catch-up with the rest of the world following the US government's clear shift to rivalry with China under President Donald Trump.

SYDNEY, Australia — The European Union on Tuesday came together to put an end to its gaping hole on the security and intentions of Chinese investments in the 28-state bloc.

The decision brings the Europeans closer to the recent shift in US policy under the Trump administration that deems China a clear strategic challenger and an unrivaled economic spy partially responsible for shifting some $600 billion of intellectual property out of the US economy alone.

The EU has come up with a provisional playbook meant to guide and coordinate the 28 members of the bloc on foreign investment — most specifically targeting investments out of China, Reuters reports.

The European Parliament and the holder of the rotating EU presidency, the Austrian government, made an agreement on Wednesday to set up an EU-wide monitoring of China's "opaque" state-owned giants that have been enthusiastically buying up European technology companies and infrastructure assets.

"Opaque state-owned enterprises or private firms with close government links have been buying EU firms using cutting-edge or dual use technologies and strategic infrastructure assets which could have a potential impact on the EU's security or public order,"the EU said in a statement.

Negotiators for both the European Parliament and the EU's 28 member states struck the deal to better protect the union's strategic technologies and infrastructure, such as ports and energy networks.

'The end of European naivety'

Merkel xi

Following an intensification of Chinese investment, the European Commission-run system will determine the risks to vital infrastructure or whether indigenous innovations are being targeted by foreign agents or entities, as claimed recently in the United States.

The European Parliament's top negotiator, Franck Proust, told Reuters that Europe was finally waking up to a threat that the rest of the world's major economies had already crystallized.

"It will mark the end of European naivety," Proust said.

"All the world powers — the United States, Japan, China — have a method of screening. Only Europe does not."

A major hurdle is that more than half the EU member states have no shared mechanism for thumbing through foreign investment, nor has there ever been a coordinated security or risk assessment.

Read more:Trump said he had 'no financial interests in Saudi Arabia.' But his businesses have made millions from the Saudi government, and the crown prince gave his New York City hotel a huge boost.

Europe is composed of many different states with vastly differing economies, interests, and concerns.

Often when they try to balance the risks and attractions of Chinese investment, they come up with wildly differing measurements.

Espionage in all but name

eclipse china

The new proposed law does not single out China by name, but the nod to state-owned enterprises and secretive technology transfers are glaringly clear references to Beijing.

FBI Director Chris Wray has said no country even comes close to China in terms of corporate and foreign espionage.

And investment often lays the perfect foundation.

In testimony given in May to the US House of Representatives' Foreign Affairs Committee, Philippe Le Corre, a nonresident senior fellow in the Europe and Asia Programs at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, noted that from $840 million invested in 2008, China's annual foreign direct investment in Europe grew to $42 billion in 2017.

"Although the United States and the EU do not always speak with one voice, they should coordinate and present a united front as Chinese capital continues to flow towards the European continent," Le Corre said.

According to Bloomberg, China's total European investments over the past 10 years, including mergers and acquisitions and greenfield investments, have come to $318 billion. By the beginning of April, China had taken over about 360 European companies. That's 45% more than Chinese investment in the US over the same period.

The proposal, demanded by France, Germany, and the former Italian government, still needs the support of the 28 EU states when they meet again in December.

There will be some opposition

greece cosco

In the EU neighborhood, Switzerland is a magnet for Chinese investment, with ChemChina's acquisition of Syngenta, an agri-business giant, that concluded this year for $46 billion, the largest-ever acquisition by a Chinese company.

Cyprus, Luxembourg, Malta, Portugal, Cyprus, and Greece all have cause to welcome Chinese investment.

Chinese maritime investment has been particularly focused in Greece and Portugal. Greece's historic port of Piraeus is now majority owned by China's Cosco Shipping.

"State-owned enterprises from China have initiated more than two-thirds of Chinese investments across the European continent," Le Corre told the House. "Chinese sovereign funds or state banks have financed other deals by private investors, illustrating Beijing's use of state-directed, market-distorting, mercantilist policies."

Parliament will vote on the proposal in February or March.

"Member states will retain the power to review and potentially block foreign direct investment on security and public order grounds," the EU said in a statement.

Commence global pushback

china police

The move is part of a broader global trend, as individually both Germany and France, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand have begun to push back against the machinations hidden within the deluge of Chinese money.

Europe has essentially been playing catch-up with the rest of the world following the US government's clear shift toward an acute rivalry with China.

Richard McGregor, a China expert who is a senior fellow at the Sydney-based think tank the Lowy Institute, said Australia's decision to reject a $13 billion bid for Australia's dominant gas pipeline network would have given a single foreign company monopoly control of most of the country's pipelines.

"If you're going to develop some kind of internal resilience in Australia, you've got to push back against China,"McGregor said at a UBS conference on Monday. "There's no nice way of doing it, and you might pay a price at some stage."

In Malaysia, the new old Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad has suspended or canceled $26 billion in Chinese-funded projects since his election victory in May.

Nations from Africa to the Pacific have taken notice after China took a controlling stake in the Sri Lankan port of Hambantota because it could not service its debt.

Zambia has been left with little choice but to hand over control of its international airport as well as a state power company to China.

Anti-Chinese sentiment there, stoked by opposition groups, has been threatening to boil over as lucrative contracts are handed over to China and the government continues to binge-borrow from Beijing.

Myanmar is trying to negotiate its way out of a gigantic Chinese-funded deepwater port and industrial zone on the Bay of Bengal— from one that was proposed to cost $7.3 billion to a more modest development that would cost $1.3 billion — in a possibly forlorn attempt to avoid what Western analysts have taken to calling the diplomacy debt trap.

Vice President Mike Pence has been the Trump administration's point man, most recently seeking protracted US counterefforts in the Pacific.

A few months after the US began imposing stiff tariffs on Chinese imports — now valued at $270 billion— the National Defense Authorization Act, passed in August and named for the late US Sen. John McCain of Arizona, stressing a "whole of government" response to the China threat.

The act comes at China hard on influence operations and the high-technology industrial threat, on the South China Sea and concerning the status of Taiwan.

Phil Mickelson takes down Tiger Woods to win $9 million after 22 holes and plenty of missed opportunities

Phil Mickelson

  • Phil Mickelson defeated Tiger Woods in match play to win $9 million on Friday.
  • The match took longer than expected, with four playoff holes needed to determine a victor.
  • Both players missed numerous opportunities to take down a decisive victory through the final holes before Mickelson finally prevailed.

It took longer than expected, but after 22 holes of match play, Phil Mickelson defeated Tiger Woods to take home $9 million in prize money.

The match between Mickelson and Woods was marked by an ending filled with missed opportunities.

Mickelson had led for most of the day, but Woods fought back to make things all square heading into the 18th hole. After the duo halved the 18th the first time around, the match went into overtime, beginning with a replay of the 18th in an attempt to determine a winner.

Woods would have the first winning opportunity. After Mickelson missed his birdie putt, Woods was left with an extremely makeable putt to take down the $9 million prize, only for it to break hard to the left just inches short of the hole.

Having split the 18th twice, Mickelson and Woods moved on to a 93-yard par 3 that would determine the match, with the two players continuing to play the hole until a victor was determined.

Mickelson would have the next chance to break through with a long birdie putt for the win, but just barely left his shot short of the hole.

Read more:Tiger Woods is already doling out trash talk ahead of his one-on-one showdown with Phil Mickelson

On the next hole, Mickelson would once again miss his birdie opportunity and pick up his ball for par. Woods, who had hit a poor shot from the tee, was left with a putt a bit too long for comfort to extend the match.

But rather than have the winner determined on Woods' miss, Mickelson told his opponent to pick up his ball so they could play the hole again and have the match end on a made shot.

Mickelson would finally settle the matter on the next hole, sinking his putt and winning the $9 million prize.

Mickelson's win was something of an upset with the Las Vegas odds favoring Woods in the match, and after his missed opportunities through the playoff holes, it felt almost inevitable that Tiger would find a way to claw back and win.

But it just wasn't Tiger's day, and eventually, Mickelson was able to close the match out for himself.

Until next year.

Some of the best deals you'll find on Black Friday are on big-ticket items — think mattresses, televisions, and other expensive tech. But sometimes, it's the little things that really matter — and these Black Friday deals are no exception.

If you don't need a new mattress or don't want to buy any pricey new electronics, you're in the right spot. We searched the web for some of the best affordable deals of the day. Ranging from quirky holiday gifts to practical kitchen gagdets, we've covered all the bases. Whether you're shopping for yourself or someone else, we think you'll find something you love — and can get for $25 or less.

Sure, Black Friday tech deals tend to mean big savings on large devices like TVs— but sometimes they also mean smaller savings on the little gadgets you use everyday. From a smart note pad to a wireless charger, we can bet you'll find something good (and useful) in this list.

We love a good sale, especially one that involves discounts on clothing we'd already be buying anyway. Save on basics like socks and T-shirts, or find deals on cozy pajama pants you otherwise wouldn't commit $48 to buying at full price.

We've been seeing major discounts at some of our favorite startups this Black Friday, including plenty of men's fashion startups that rarely have deals. We rounded up our favorite men's clothing sales going on here, but these are a few of the exceptionally affordable standout deals.

  • The lawsuit filed against President Donald Trump, the Donald J. Trump Foundation, and his children Ivanka Trump, Eric Trump, and Donald Trump Jr., alleging misuse of charity funds, will move forward.
  • Justice Saliann Scarpulla of the New York State Supreme Court issued a ruling on Friday, rejecting the notion that President Trump cannot face a suit while in office.
  • Lawyers for the Trump Foundation made several arguments to get the case dismissed, including on the grounds that "a sitting president could not be sued," according to the 27-page ruling.
  • The suit, as described in Friday's ruling, alleges the "misuse of charitable assets and self-dealing" and that "the Foundation and its board members have transacted business illegally and abusively over a number of years."

The lawsuit filed against President Donald Trump, the Donald J. Trump Foundation, and his children Ivanka Trump, Eric Trump, and Donald Trump Jr., alleging misuse of charity funds, is allowed to move forward.

Justice Saliann Scarpulla of the New York State Supreme Court issued a ruling on Friday, allowed the lawsuit to proceed and rejected the notion that President Trump cannot face such legal action while in office.

Lawyers for the Trump Foundation made several arguments to get the case dismissed, including on the grounds that "a sitting president could not be sued," according to the 27-page ruling.

However, Judge Scarpulla, citing decisions in Clinton v. Jonesand Zervos v. Trump, stated that she did have jurisdiction and allowed the case to move forward.

The lawsuit was initially filed in June by the New York State Attorney General Barbara Underwood. The suit, as described in Friday's ruling, alleges the "misuse of charitable assets and self-dealing" and that "the Foundation and its board members have transacted business illegally and abusively over a number of years." The New York attorney general's office is arguing that Trump, the foundation, Ivanka, Donald Jr., and Eric violated both state and federal law.

Specific allegations include using charitable assests that mostly consisted of outside donations to settle legal obligations, "purchase personal items," and "advance Mr. Trump's presidential election."

The Washington Post initially dug into the financials of the Trump Foundation during the campaign in 2016.

The New York Attorney General's office then began its investigation, initially under former Attorney General Eric Schneiderman (a Trump antagonist). Schneiderman resigned in May of 2018 after multiple women accused him of abuse. Underwood took over the investigation and filed the suit in June.

The suit seeks to dissolve the foundation, bar Trump from heading a charitable organization for a decade, bar Ivanka, Eric, and Donald Jr. from leading a nonprofit for a year, and obtain recompense of $2.8 million plus penalties.

Following the initial suit, Trump lashed out on Twitter, suggesting that it was political and vowing "I won't settle this case!"

A statement from the foundation called the suit, "politics at its very worst."

"The Foundation has donated over $19 million to worthy charitable causes — more than it even received," a spokesperson for the Trump Foundation said back in June. "The President himself — or through his companies — has contributed more than $8 million. The reason the Foundation was able to donate more than it took in is because it had little to no expenses. This is unheard of for a charitable foundation."

On Friday, lawyer for the Trump Foundation Alan Futerfas said, "The decision means only that the case goes forward. As we have maintained throughout, all of the money raised by the Foundation went to charitable causes to assist those most in need. As a result, we remain confident in the ultimate outcome of these proceedings."

INSIDER contacted the Trump Organization for comment.

A statement from AG Underwood's office said, "We welcome Justice Scarpulla's decision, which allows our suit to move forward."

"As we detailed in our petition earlier, the Trump Foundation functioned as little more than a checkbook to serve Mr. Trump's business and political interests," the statement continued. "There are rules that govern private foundations — and we intend to enforce them, no matter who runs the foundation."

'If he's so good, why is this happening': Trump reportedly blames Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin for recommending Jerome Powell as Fed chair

  • Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin has reportedly drawn President Donald Trump's ire after a series of economic decisions and recommendations, according to The Wall Street Journal.
  • Trump is said to have blamed Mnuchin, who backed the appointment of Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell.
  • Powell has raised interest rates three times in 2018, and more hikes are expected in 2019. Trump has been openly critical of the Fed's moves.
  • After The Journal published its report on Friday afternoon, Trump appeared to dispel the notion that he was irritated with Mnuchin.

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin has reportedly drawn President Donald Trump's ire after a series of economic decisions and recommendations, according to a Wall Street Journal report on Friday.

Trump is said to have blamed Mnuchin, who backed the appointment of Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell.

Powell has raised interest rates three times in 2018, and more are expected in 2019. Trump has railed against rate hikes, which he described as a "mistake" and his "biggest threat."

"I think the Fed is making a mistake," Trump said to reporters in October. "They are so tight. I think the Fed has gone crazy."

Although Trump appointed Powell to replace chairwoman Janet Yellen in 2017, he did so based on Mnuchin's recommendation, people close to the White House said to The Journal. Sources added that Trump's frustration towards an appointee extended to those who recommended them to him.

"I thought you told me he was going to be good," Trump said to Mnuchin, according to people familiar with a briefing of the conversation.

In another conversation, Trump reportedly pointed to a shaky stock market after someone spoke highly of Mnuchin: "If he's so good, why is this happening," Trump said, according to a person familiar with the matter.

Trump voiced his concern with aides and reflected on whether he should have appointed JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon for Treasury Secretary, according to The Journal. Trump eventually chose Mnuchin for the position after his service as finance chairman during the presidential campaign.

White House spokeswoman Lindsay Walters said in a statement that Trump "appreciates" Mnuchin's duties. Mnuchin has attempted to salvage Trump's trade policy with China, which is frequently agitated by threats of tariffs from both countries. Mnuchin and Chinese Vice Premier Liu He spoke on the phone on Friday, ahead of Trump's meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping at the Group 20 summit next week.

"The president has been long clear about his views on the Fed," White House spokeswoman Lindsay Walters said to The Journal, adding that Mnuchin "has been effective in carrying out the president's agenda."

After The Journal published its report on Friday afternoon, Trump appeared to dispel the notion that Mnuchin's fate would mimic that of other former aides in his administration.

"I am extremely happy and proud of the job being done by [Secretary Steven Mnuchin]," Trump said in a tweet. "The FAKE NEWS likes to write stories to the contrary, quoting phony sources or jealous people, but they aren't true."

"They never like to ask me for a quote b/c it would kill their story," Trump added.

'Oh my god': People in San Francisco reacted in shock as a ferry slammed into a dock

SF ferry crash

A Golden State Transit ferry with 53 people onboard slammed into a dock on Friday as onlookers on shore reacted with shock.

Video captured the chaotic scene as the M.S. San Francisco ferry crashed into the docks at the San Francisco Ferry Building, as onlookers scrambled to get out of the way.

According to local news station KGO-TV, the ferry "hit the ramp on the far dock first, then bounced into the corner by gate 'B' damaging the bow."

Images of the aftermath showed damage to the ship, along with the railing and concrete at the dock.

Golden Gate Highway and Transportation District spokesperson Priya Clemens told the San Francisco Examiner that the ferry ruptured its hull after it hit the guardrail.

Two passengers suffered minor injuries — including a sore back and bruised hip — and nobody on land was hurt, Clemens told the Examiner.

The ferry originated in Larkspur, California, according to reports, and it crashed into the dock at around 2:30 p.m., local time.

It was not immediately clear what caused the crash. The Golden Gate Highway and Transportation District and the US Coast Guard are investigating, Clemens said. The crew of five were being tested for drugs and alcohol and data from control systems will be analyzed, the Examiner reported.

NFL Week 12 betting guide and our best bets for the Westgate SuperContest

Case Keenum

When gambling, the smallest margins always seem to make the difference.

During Monday night's shootout between the Chiefs and Rams, both teams combined to score 105 points between them, but one missed extra point from Los Angeles still made the difference between a winning week and a losing week for our picks in the Westgate SuperContest.

No time to mourn our losses though — we're back at it this week with our five best bets for this Sunday, plus a few other wagers to consider making this weekend.

Home teams get the asterisk.

LAST WEEK: 2-3
OVERALL: 25-29-1

New York Giants (+6) over Philadelphia Eagles*

The Eagles secondary is so banged up that head coach Doug Pederson told the media that some receivers were taking reps at cornerback in practice this week.

Philadelphia may be the better team, but covering as 6-point favorites against a rejuvenated Giants team feels like a tall order. On the Giants side of the ball, things are looking a lot better, with Eli Manning finally taking advantage of his team's plethora of offensive weapons.

Carolina Panthers* (-3.5) over Seattle Seahawks

The Carolina Panthers are undefeated at home, and with the Saints running away with the NFC South, this matchup against the Seahawks carries huge implications for the conference's Wild Card picture.

Cam Newton is in the midst of another incredible season, completing over 68% of his passes and with 20 touchdowns to just six interceptions. He should do enough to get the Panthers the win and the cover.

Indianapolis Colts* (-7.5) over Miami Dolphins

The Dolphins have lost three of their past four games, with all of those losses coming by more than a touchdown. While Miami has Ryan Tannehill returning at quarterback this week, he's already admitted he won't be at 100%, and the rest of team surrounding him is still made up of the same teammates.

Meanwhile, the Colts have been firing on all cylinders lately, winning four straight games and giving chase to the Houston Texans in the AFC South. This doesn't feel like the spot where they'd slip.

Netflix just dropped a new season of its Canadian series 'Frontier,' starring 'Aquaman' and 'Game of Thrones' actor Jason Momoa

  • The third season of Netflix's Canadian drama series, "Frontier," starring Jason Momoa, debuted on Friday.
  • Netflix acquired the global rights to the series in 2016.
  • It was originally commissioned as Discovery Canada's first original scripted series.

A significant aspect of Netflix's strategy is acquiring TV shows outside of the US and introducing them to a worldwide audience. Some prime examples are British series "Bodyguard" and "The End of the F---ing World," which debuted on the streaming giant this year outside of the UK.

But it's not only British shows that Netflix is investing in. Netflix acquired the exclusive global rights to Canada's period drama, "Frontier," in 2016, according to Deadline. The show stars "Aquaman" and "Game of Thrones" actor Jason Momoa as half-Irish, half-Native American violent fur trader Declan Harp.

The six-episode third season dropped on the platform Friday. Netflix describes the series like this: "In 18th-century North America, ruthless trappers and entrepreneurs fight to wrest control of the fur trade from the mighty Hudson's Bay Company."

"Frontier" was commissioned as Discovery Canada's first scripted TV series in 2016. It debuted on the network, then, before being streamed outside of Canada by Netflix, according to Deadline. The third season will air on Discovery Canada in December.

The strategy benefits both Netflix and the series' original home, as Netflix adds more subscribers and the show gains a bigger audience. The strategy has benefited other series like British "The Last Kingdom"— a Viking drama which also premiered its third season this week and has become a global hit.

Dedric Lawson soars for two monster overtime dunks to seal Kansas' win over Tennessee to clinch NIT Season Tip-Off Championship

Dedric Lawson

  • In the second top-five matchup of the week, the No. 2 Kansas Jayhawks held off the fifth-ranked Tennessee Volunteers through overtime to clinch the NIT Season Tip-Off championship in New York.
  • Memphis transfer and AP preseason All-America team selection Dedric Lawson took over for Kansas in overtime, scoring eight of the Jayhawks' 18 points in the final five minutes of play.
  • Lawson soared for two Earth-shaking dunks in that stretch to send Kansas fans at the Barclays Center into a frenzy and seal the Jayhawks' second win over a top-10 ranked opponent this season.

The second top-five college basketball matchup this week proved to be a thriller until the end, and it took the heroics of an AP preseason All-America team selection to get the job done in overtime.

Newly-minted Kansas Jayhawk Dedric Lawson erupted for 24 points, 13 rebounds, and five assists to lead the Jayhawks to a thrilling 87-81 overtime victory against Grant Williams and the Tennessee Volunteers.

Lawson — who transferred from Memphis to head coach Bill Self's program alongside his brother this past offseason — poured in eight of his team's 18 points during the overtime period. He also soared for two Earth-shaking dunks that sent Kansas fans at the Barclays Center into a frenzy and sealed the NIT Season Tip-Off championship for the Jayhawks.

"I wanted to dunk," Lawson said postgame. "I was trying to get some movement and trying to seal the deal. I just wanted to score really."

The Memphis, Tennessee native opened up scoring during overtime with a jump hook in the paint that was beautiful enough to impress his Hall of Fame head coach.

"The jump hook he made was a big time jump hook in the middle of the lane," Self said. "I thought he played great."

Later in the overtime period, Lagerald Vick — who contributed 15 points and a crucial 8-0 run late in the second half — delivered a perfect lob pass to Lawson, who rose above the rim and slammed it home to extend Kansas' lead to five and shift the momentum firmly in the Jayhawks' favor.

Another two minutes later, the elder Lawson once again stole the show. After his brother, K.J., stripped the ball from Tennessee's Jordan Bowden, Lawson ran the length of the floor and Vick connected with him in stride. He took two steps through the lane and took off for the one-handed slam that ultimately secured Kansas' second win over a top-10 ranked opponent on the season.

"In overtime, I just wanted to be aggressive," Lawson said. "I came out and knew that the score was 0-0 and it was a new game. I wanted to win. I wanted to win very badly and I tried to do everything I could to seal the deal."

Yuengling, America's largest independent brewery, is a sixth-generation family company run by 4 sisters who have figured out how to work with family without losing their minds

  • Four sisters run Yuengling, the oldest family-run brewery in America producing more than 2 million barrels of beer annually.
  • Each sister brings a different skill set to the company, which helps keep the brewery flowing.
  • If the sisters have a new idea, they run it by their father, Dick Yuengling, before moving forward.

Yuengling is the oldest family-run brewery in America producing more than 2 million barrels of beer annually. Four sisters, Jen, Wendy, Debbie, and Sheryl Yuengling, were asked by their father if they wanted to join the family business and help run the brewery in the late 1990s.

Jen and Wendy recently sat down for an interview for Business Insider's podcast "This Is Success." Wendy handles marketing and Jen runs operations at the brewery but studied psychology in college, which she said helps the family dynamic.

"I think we make it work very well because we each have different skill sets and we're each responsible for different roles and we play different roles," Jen said.

At first, patriarch Dick Yuengling ran the company as any entrepreneur would and made several decisions without consulting his daughters. But over time, that changed and the family dynamic grew stronger each year the sisters worked at the brewery.

Read more: 2 of the 4 sisters behind Yuengling, America's largest independent brewery, explain how they're making the 190-year-old family beer business their own

"Over the last few years, as we've all sort of stepped into leadership roles and are more involved, I think we are taking more pressure off of our dad and taking off of his plate and starting to run with certain things in the business, and we each drive certain parts of the company," Wendy said.

Today, if the sisters have a new idea for the company, they always run it by their 75-year-old father.

"And he's been quintessential entrepreneur and he's on the down slope of that, which is to be expected, but the fact that he's very supportive of some of these newer initiatives that we've set about — that saw the Golden Pilsner," Jen said.

Yuengling recently came out with the Golden Pilsner, the first new Yuengling product in 17 years. Wendy said there are moments where they have to persuade their father to move forward on projects.

"It probably happens once a week, but I think if we truly believe it's the right thing for the company and it's the right thing for the brand's long term, we continue to make a case and he eventually does come around on most things," Wendy said.

Since 1985, Dick has been running the brewery and working out of the Yuengling offices.

"He's there every day, twice a day, but I think it means something to him that we're there alongside him and we're working long hours aside him, and I think there's some comfort seeing that we're taking on more responsibility, and I think he's got confidence in what we're doing," Wendy said.

Jen added: "In the most recent years, too, and maybe not so much as a company overall but personally, and where we've grown and really how he's grown too with the company, and allowing us to assume these leadership roles."

As shoppers go wild on Black Friday, some Americans already stocked up during Alibaba's massive $30.8 billion shopping bonanza

daniel zhang alibaba

Black Friday sales hit record highs this year. But, that doesn't mean it was the biggest online shopping day in the world this November.

Shoppers spent $2.4 billion online on Wednesday, a whopping 31.8% increase from 2017, according to Adobe Analytics data. Thanksgiving Day online sales hit $3.7 billion, 28% growth year over year. Black Friday was similarly impressive, with $4.1 billion in online sales as of 8 p.m. ET, an increase of 23.3%.

However, there was another major shopping day earlier in November. On Singles Day — November 11 — Alibaba sales reached $30.8 billion online globally, far exceeding Black Friday figures.

Most of those sales were in China. However, US shopping on Singles Day grew 29.1% compared to 2017, according to Adobe data.

"If you look at the average Ali Express consumer in the US, they're middle class folks just like in China," Alibaba president Michael Evans told Business Insider on Singles Day in Shanghai.

American shoppers spent $1.82 billion online on Singles Day — less, even, than on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. However, the impact of Singles Day in the US is quietly and swiftly growing.

alibaba gala

Perhaps the biggest effect Singles Day in having on the US is American companies learning to take a page out of Alibaba's handbook. While the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade is the closest thing to Alibaba's 11/11 kickoff gala, companies across the board are imitating Alibaba in stretching Black Friday to be longer and start earlier.

"US retailers are looking closely at the success of Alibaba's 'Singles' Day' shopping extravaganza to inform next year’s Holiday shopping season, particularly the concept of its 'pre-sale' period," Accenture Strategy's Frank Layo said in a comment on Friday morning.

"It allows shoppers to preview merchandise and deals in the run up to the main event and secure goods in their shopping carts, usually for a small deposit," Layo continued. "This helps to improve conversion rates and gives retailers granular visibility into inventory requirements."

Next year, Alibaba may poach shoppers more directly. While the trade war has helped dump some cold water on Alibaba's move into the US, executives have hinted that they want Singles Day to become more of a global event.

Read more: Alibaba's straining to continue its era of record-breaking Singles' Day sales — here's how executives plan to keep growing

"Everywhere I go, which is pretty much everywhere in the world, there are not very many people who do not know about 11/11," Evans told Business Insider.

"Many people ask the question — how can we participate next year? People are very interested, I think partly because they've heard of Black Friday and Cyber Monday and they think that's quite big."

He continued: "They've heard of Amazon Prime Day. But, we sold as much in five minutes as Amazon sold in an entire Prime Day."

How technology giants are using their reach and digital prowess to take on traditional banks (GOOG, GOOGL, AAPL, FB, MSFT, AMZN)

$

This is a preview of a research report from Business Insider Intelligence, Business Insider's premium research service. To learn more about Business Insider Intelligence, click here.

As headlines like "Amazon Is Secretly Becoming a Bank" and "Google Wants to Be a Bank Now" increasingly crop up in the news, tech giants are coming into the spotlight as the next potential payments disruptors.

Millennials Trust Tech Payments

And with these firms' broad reach and hefty resources, the possibility that they'll descend on financial services is a hard narrative to shy away from. To mitigate potential losses under this scenario, traditional players will have to grasp not only the level of the threat, but also which segments of the financial industry are most at risk of disruption.

Google, Apple, Facebook, Amazon, and Microsoft, collectively known as GAFAM, are already active investors in the payments industry, and they're slowly encroaching on legacy providers' core offerings. Each of these five companies has introduced features and offerings that have the potential to disrupt specific parts of the banking system. And we expect a plethora of additional offerings to hit the market as these companies look to build out their ecosystems.

However, it remains unlikely that any of these firms will become full-blown banks or entirely upend incumbents, due to regulatory barriers and the entrenched positions of big banks. Moreover, consumers still trust traditional firms first and foremost with their financial data. That means these companies are far more likely to rattle the cages of incumbents than they are to cause their total demise. That said, these companies have a proven capacity to revolutionize industries, making their entry into payments critical to watch for legacy players, especially as their moves demonstrate an intent to be a disruptive force in the industry.

In this report, Business Insider Intelligence analyzes the current impact GAFAM is having on the financial services industry, and the strengths and weaknesses of each firm's position in payments. We also discuss the barriers these companies face as they push deeper into financial services, as well as which aspects of a bank’s core business provide the biggest opportunities for the new players. Lastly, we assess these companies' future potential in payments and the broader financial services industry, and examine ways incumbents can manage the threat.

Here are some of the key takeaways:

  • GAFAM has been actively encroaching on the payments space. This includes offering mobile wallets for in-store and online payments, peer-to-peer money transfer services, and even loans for small- and medium-sized businesses.
  • These firms' broad reach and hefty resources have put them in a strong position to take on legacy players. GAFAM has products that have been adopted by millions of users, and in some cases, billions. They also have access to a tremendous amount of capital — Apple, Microsoft, and Google had over $400 billion combined in cash at the end of 2016.
  • However, these firms have to overcome major barriers to compete against legacy players, which includes regulation and trust. For example, 60% of respondents to a Business Insider Intelligence survey stated that they trust their bank most to provide them financial services.
  •  As a result of these barriers, it's more likely that GAFAM will make a dent in very specific segments of the financial services industry rather than completely disrupt it.

In full, the report:

  • Explains what GAFAM's done to place themselves in a position to be the next potential payments disruptors.
  • Breaks down the strengths and weaknesses of each company as it relates to their ability to build out an extensive financial ecosystem.
  • Looks at the potential barriers that could limit GAFAM's ability to capture a significant share of the payments industry from traditional players.
  • Identifies what strategies legacy players will have to deploy to mitigate the threat by these tech giants.

White House communications chief Bill Shine will reportedly receive $7 million from Fox while working for Trump

Bill Shine

  • White House communications chief Bill Shine will reportedly receive approximately $7 million from 21st Century Fox, the parent company of Fox News, while working at the White House.
  • The payment is reportedly part of a severance package attached to Shine's ouster from Fox News following revelations that he allegedly mishandled of several sexual misconduct claims against Fox employees.
  • Shine is one of several White House staffers who have been scrutinized for potential conflicts of interest.

Bill Shine, the White House Deputy Chief of Staff for Communications, will receive approximately $7 million from Fox News' parent company, 21st Century Fox, through 2019, according to a financial disclosure reviewed by CNBC Friday.

The sum, which comes on top of $8.4 million already paid to Shine, is reportedly part of the severance package he received after being ousted from the conservative media giant for his botched handling of several sexual misconduct allegations at the company. Among other things, Shine has been accused of covering up allegations against late Fox News Chairman Roger Ailes.

Two months after Shine left Fox News, he was hired by the White House to replace Hope Hicks in the top communications role, which has been in flux throughout President Donald Trump's tenure.

Compared to other top staff forced to leave Fox News, Shine's payout was relatively small. Bill O'Reilly was paid $25 million and Ailes was reportedly paid $40 million when they left the network. Trump has repeatedly hired former Fox News staff and contributors, but Shine appears to be the first top White House official to remain on the payroll of a major media company while employed by the government.

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment, and Fox declined to comment on the record.

Shine isn't alone in receiving criticism for potential conflicts of interest. Top White House advisers and Trump family members Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner reported earning millions from outside business ventures while working for the president, according to The Guardian

Michelle Arbov, Vice President of M&A, IAC

  • Michelle Arbov, age 28, is vice president of mergers and acquisitions at media company IAC.
  • She helped lead a series of high profile acquisitions, including IAC's purchase of Angie's List for over $500 million, and played a key role in scaling its HomeAdvisor business.
  • Arbov was named this year to Forbes' 30 under 30 list for finance. Business Insider recently asked her to share her best career advice for other young professionals.

Michelle Arbov, age 28, is a rising star at IAC, a $15 billion internet conglomerate founded by media mogul Barry Diller.

She joined the company three years ago as the associate director on the merger and acquisition team and has been promoted rapidly.  Now, as the vice president of M&A at IAC, Arbov leads the company’s efforts in corporate development and financing. She was recently named to Forbes' 30 under 30 list for finance.

IAC, whose holdings include widely-recognized brands such as Vimeo, Tinder, and Investopedia, is known for its aggressive acquisition strategy. Arbov has handled a slew of high-profile deals and has been instrumental in scaling IAC’s pillar business in the digital home services marketplace.

A notable example is her work on IAC’s $500 million purchase of home services website Angie’s List in 2017. This led to Angie’s List's merger with and IAC’s own reviews site HomeAdvisor which created ANGI Homeservices. That company went public in October 2017.

During her three-year stint at IAC, Arbov also led other prominent deals, including the acquisition of home improvement sites HomeStars and MyHammer, as well as ANGI’s recent purchase of household services company Handy.

Before her role at IAC, she worked at Goldman Sachs and hedge fund Och-Ziff Capital Management. She shared her  career advice for young professionals with Business Insider.

Find a company that values ambition.

"Join a company that aligns with you and your ambitions. Culture is a huge factor in choosing the right place to work. An example of a great culture is one that values hard work and lets you take on as much as you can if you raise your hand — as long as you deliver."

Learn from challenges

“Challenges generally means you're growing and you're learning, and I think learning is a key thing to constantly strive and achieve in any job. Challenges are good in the sense that you'll learn from them. And it probably won't be a challenge in your next iteration.”

When facing a challenge, “it’s always important to take a step back and think about what the goal is, what you are trying to achieve, and what the task at hand is.”

“You can have five different deals that you're trying to push forward, and it's always a challenge in terms of what should take priority. Ask questions to whoever the right people are and figure out what the priority should be. Try not to get overwhelmed ... think through it and take it day by day.”

Have confidence

“Having confidence is believing in yourself. Keep your eye on the prize and continue to ask for more and do more. It's  important, especially as a female.”
